Abstract: This paper probes into William Shakespeare&s humanistic ideas reflected by his perspective on women underlying the play Othello.
  Key words: P Humanism
Acclaimed as a perfect Shakespearian tragedy, Othello depicts a story chiefly about jealousy and love. Desdemona, the heroine, is another classical female image of Shakespeare&s plays, who is a gallant fighter against medieval partiality, as well as an innocent adherent of medieval religious conventions. Her dramatic life, to a large extend, reveals Shakespeare&s immense care and compassion towards women, thus enabling us to take a glimpse at his humanistic ideas that he may desire to get across: care for women.
Tracing back to the days when Shakespeare was alive, humanism enjoyed unprecedented popularity among the giants of the time due to the emergence of Renaissance. It attached tremendous significance to the cause of unfettering individuals from feudal conventions. While it is widely acknowledged that &individual& here exclusively refers to the male in the society (1), in other words, the society was still forcefully dominated by men in accordance with strictly hierarchy, and women were still proceeding in inferiority and showing up to meet men&s needs. They were required to be subject to their fathers before marriage, and to their husbands after marriage. Father&s authority and husband&s authority together make up the doctrine of patriarchal culture. (2) That&s exactly the age to which Desdemona belongs.
Contrary to the stereotypical female of her contemporaries, Desdemona secretly marries Othello, in spite of general medieval creeds. When Othello is caught in the trial in the council-chamber, she decisively rises to the occasion to defend her newly-married husband against her father&s will. In this section, Desdemona, is portrayed as a seemingly Mary-like (3), flawless anti-feudal patriarchy fighter.
Drastically, in the later section Desdemona turns into approximately another person, who is unbelievably submissive to her husband&Othello. She exhibits enormous patience and obedience to the last minute of her life in response to Othello&s false discredits and taunts.
Many people have been arguing that Shakespeare&s extraordinary familiarity in the Bible, which preaches female&s inferiority, plays a key role in affecting Desdemona&s final destiny. (4) However, I can&t agree. Firstly, it doesn&t necessarily prove that Shakespeare accepts everything that the Bible spreads, and even no authoritative evidence suggests which religion he embraced. (5) Second, in the latter section of the play, what Desdemona is informed by Emilia with regards virginity delivers a profound message, which totally goes against the above argument concerning male authority: &But I do think it is their husbands' faults/ &/ What is it that they do, when they change us for others? Is it sport? /I think it is: And doth affection breed it? /I think it doth. Isn't frailty that thus errs? / It is so too: And have not we affections/Desires for sport, and frailty, as men have? &/The ills we do, their ills instruct us so& (Act4, Scene3). Shakespeare overtly touches upon equality between sexes and injustice of patriarchy, pointing out that women are individuals not different from any man. Emilia, in this case, is the massager of Shakespeare&s humanistic idea: women&s yearning for equality and respect (6), which serves as a crucial clue to suggest that Shakespeare immensely sympathizes upon women.
A step further, the sharp contrast of Desdemona&s life, particularly her tragic ending, as I see it, is where Shakespeare stands out. Desdemona successfully challenges her father, while she doesn&t even try to argue with her husband&Othello, in part the reason lies in the influence of Bible, which advocates that husbands are the masters of their wives and wives should be meek to their husbands, yet mentions much less about women&s subordination to their fathers (7), hence husband&s authority over father&s authority in patriarchy. This, in a sense, shows how greater the religious belief can impact people&s life than any other practical factors. The power of religion overwhelmingly adds the chance of Desdemona&s miserable second-half life internally. Shakespeare endows Desdemona with both beauty and wit, yet ends her with a tragedy. But it is precisely this cliffy inconsistency, culminating in her eventual innocent death, that makes the story much more heart-wrenching, thus more conducive to stir up the public&s awareness of women&s pathetic social plight, especially in marriage.
Additionally, as we mentioned before, females are excluded from enjoying the freedom that humanism of Renaissance promotes, while Shakespeare in this play singles out a female, Desdemona, rather than a male to hold up high the flag against medieval darkness in the pursuit of individual liberty in the former section. Females, represented by Desdemona and Emilia, just like their counterparts, have displayed great strength to wrestle against feudal conventions like those of his many other plays, such as Juliet in Juliet and Romeo, Portia in The Merchant of Venice, which provides us with another hint to affirm that Shakespeare is genuinely concerned about women who are despised in patriarchal system.高二上英语总复习精华选择题129题-高中二年级英语试题练习、期中期末试卷、测验题、复习资料-高中英语试卷-试卷下载
