Remi Thirion's Commencal Supreme DH V4

on 2 September 2016
R&mi Thirion is a fast Frenchman who is aiming to be the toast of the locals here in Andorra come race day on Saturday. Back in 2013 he won his as yet only World Cup here, minutes from his team Commencal's head office in the town of Pal.
It& rough and perfectly suited to his fast, all-out style. The Commencal Supreme DH V4 is the bike he&ll be targeting towards the finish line and his mechanic, Damien Biedau, talked us through it.

At the heart of the medium-sized Commencal is one of the more complex-looking frame designs on the UCI World Cup circuit, with it&s intricate linkage and chain idler set-up. Look closer and you'll see it&s bedecked with lots of little intricate details and neat touches. The wheelbase can be adjusted by bolting in one of three different lengths of dropouts.
R&mi tends to run the medium option, but will swap to the longer on steeper tracks and also runs the 8mm extension headset cups. The chain idler and high pivot design allow the Commencal to munch through the very heaviest of chop.

At 16.8kg, the alloy Andorran is by no means the lightest bike in the pits, but Damien points out that, coupled with that sensitive suspension, R&mi prefers a slightly heavier machine to help with high-speed stability.
&The race bike is my bike, for sure...,& Damien laughs. &He has a training bike that I see m it will be wrecked, I rebuild it, but the race bike stays with me!&

Suspension
The Commencal Riding Addiction team are sponsored by components powerhouse SRAM, so run RockShox suspension. Unlike most teams, who simply drop the dampers out of the bikes and dump them with the SRAM experts, Damien services R&mi&s himself.
&All the shim stacks are completely different from stock,& Damien says. &We run an air spring in the RockShox Boxxer World Cup fork with four Bottomless Tokens and around 90psi in there. He likes the front end to be pretty stiff and really slow. For the back end he likes to have a bit of give, so it&s really fast at the beginning then slows down again. It&s a RockShox Vivid Air 2C shock.&

Wheels take a beating in downhill so Damien keeps three sets in rotation
a wet weather set, a practice/quali set and a race day set. The race day options have some extra love and attention paid to them, with virtually all the internal grease having been removed to produce the fastest pick-up possible.

Spank provide the team with wheels and Damien has rebuilt R&mi&s with lighter gauge spokes in front and heavier in the rear to help absorb impacts. The team are also running prototype Hutchinson tyres which feature slightly different sidewalls to help ward off punctures. Even if it&s dry on race day, Thirion will likely run the DZO mud tyre, but cut down. The more aggressively spaced tread helping to dig in on the steeper sections.

Components
Commencal Riding Addiction have turned to the UK&s handlebar specialists, Renthal, to provide the cockpits for their team bikes. Remi runs the company's Fatbar with a 30mm rise and cut down to 770mm in width. Interestingly, he runs the alloy versions, preferring the feel and feedback they offer compared to the lightweight carbon fibre options.

Guide brake levers

SRAM&s X01 DH accounts for the drivetrain and Avid CODE brake calipers are mated with Guide levers. Like a lot of pros, Thirion has opted for expensive titanium bolts to help reduce unwanted heft and runs them on his brake rotors, rear shock mounts and stem.

SINGAPORE: Most home owners here will pay less property tax next year compared to the amount paid this year, said the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) on Monday (Nov 30). Owners of Housing and Development Board (HDB) flats will see tax savings of 9 to 24 per cent, while more than 80 per cent of private home owners with reduced annual values will see savings of between 3 and 20 per cent, IRAS said in a press release. In fact, all 1- and 2-room HDB flat owner-occupiers and 28,200 3-room HDB flat owner-occupiers will not have to pay any property tax when the revised annual values take effect from Jan 1 next year, it added. Property tax is a tax on property ownership and it is payable on all properties regardless of whether the property is rented out, owner-occupied or left vacant, IRAS said.
