Chapter 4 has given a detailed description of the wavelet transform in the simple one-dimensional continuous wavelet transform (1D-CWT) case. This technique shows some shortcoming in term of coping with very noisy simulated and real fringe patterns and in term of accuracy. Chapter 5 introduces the two-dimensional continuous wavelet transform (2D-CWT) and its application to fringe analysis. The 2D-CWT is a new and promising technique for the demodulation of fringe patterns. The 2D-CWT seems to have better noise immunity and hence better performance in demodulating noisy simulated and real fringe patterns. Moreover, it provides more accurate results than 1D-CWT. In a similar manner to the 1D-CWT, the 2D-CWT can be classified into both phase estimation (Kadooka et al., 2003) and frequency estimation methods (Sciammarella et al., 2005). In this thesis, the former technique will be considered, in conjunction with two types of mother wavelets, namely: the two-dimensional complex Morlet wavelet and the two-dimensional fan wavelet (Kirby 2005; Gdeisat et al., 2006). Section 5.2 explains the main concept of the 2D-CWT. In section 5.3, the direct maximum ridge extraction algorithm and the novel cost function ridge extraction algorithm are introduced. Computer simulation and experimental results are explained and discussed in section 5.4. Section 5.5 introduces the fringe pattern tiling technique. Finally, a summary of the chapter is given in section 5.6.
Over a period of a few years, wavelet analysis has emerged as a powerful tool to be used in the phase demodulation of fringe patterns. This has been performed using both one-dimensional and two-dimensional continuous wavelet transform techniques. The theory of the two-dimensional continuous wavelet transform has been reviewed in this chapter. Two kinds of mother wavelets have been employed in the phase demodulation procedure, namely: the two-dimensional complex Morlet wavelet and the two-dimensional fan wavelet. However, the phase extraction procedure goes through many different stages, and at the heart of them is the so-called “ridge extraction” procedure. In this chapter, two ridge extraction algorithms have been introduced. The first one is the direct maximum ridge extraction algorithm and the second is a novel cost function ridge extraction method. Simulated and real fringe patterns have been used to test the performance of the two ridge extraction techniques, employing both the 2D complex Morlet and the 2D fan wavelets. The results show that the cost function method outperforms the direct maximum method and that the fan wavelet beats the 2D complex Morlet wavelet in demodulating fringe patterns that have high phase variation.
Then, a comparison was made between the 2D-CWT, in conjunction with the cost function ridge extraction algorithm, and the Fourier transform fringe analysis
method. Simulated and real fringe patterns were used in this comparison. The results demonstrate that the wavelet technique is more accurate and robust than the FTFA technique. At the end of this chapter, a new 2D-CWT tiling technique has been proposed to demodulate fringe patterns. Simulated and real fringe patterns have been used to test the performance of the method. The results show that there is not much improvement in performance when compared to the normal 2D-CWT method.
