Coffee is one of the world's most widely&enjoyed drinks. Now,a new research suggests that if you drink enough coffee,it might help you avoid certain kinds of cancer.
Dr Mia Hashibe of the University of Utah School of Medicine was interested in the connection between coffee drinking and certain cancers of the head and neck. Researchers have looked into this before, but without reaching any firm conclusions. She said, “So this finding from our new study was quite a surprise. We didn't really have any expectation of which direction it could go into.”
To sort out the confusion, Hashibe and her assistants used statistical(统计学的) techniques to, in effect, make one big study out of the earlier smaller studies. She explained,“Thanks to the earlier studies, we have a lot more power than earlier studies that looked at this. And we included 4,000 cancer patients who have cancer of the mouth and throat. And then 9,000 controls, people who do not have cancer.” Those studies in Europe and the United States found that people who drank a lot of coffee were less likely to develop cancers of the mouth and throat. “We saw 4 cups of coffee per day,”Hashibe said, “This was the 40 percent decrease in risk. We did not see the same effect for drinking three cups or less per day.”
Mia Hashibe said there was a weak connection between cancer risk and drinking coffee without caffeine. And she and her assistants found no proof that drinking tea provided the same protection as drinking coffee. Their research is published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.
Hashibe says it is not clear how coffee might protect drinkers from certain cancers. “There are a few chemicals that are known to be antioxidants(抗氧化物) in coffee. So we are thinking perhaps they are playing some sort of protective role against several cancers.”

I had the meanest mother in the world. While other kids ate candy for breakfast, I had to have cereal, eggs and toast. Others had cokes and candy for lunch, while we had to eat a sandwich. As you can guess, my supper was different from the other kids'. But at least I was not alone in my suffering. My sister and two brothers had the same mean mother as I did.
My mother insisted on knowing where we were at all times. She had to know who our friends were and what we were doing. We had to wear clean clothes every day. Other kids always wore their clothes for days. We reached the height of disgrace because she made our clothes herself, just to save money.
The worst is yet to come. We had to be in bed by 9:00 each night and up at 7:45 the next morning. So while my friends slept, my mother actually had the courage to break Child Labor Law. She made us work. I believed she lay awake all night thinking up mean things to do to us. Through the years, our friends' report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing. My mother, however, would merely be content with black marks. None of us was allowed the pleasure of being a dropout.
She forced us to grow up into educated and honest adults. Using this as a background, I'm now trying to bring up my three children. I'm filled with pride when my children think I am mean because now I thank God every day for giving me the meanest mother in the world.

Surface Exploration. Robots make great explorers on planets, moons, and other landing areas. Aside from the Earth, just about every surface in the solar system is unsafe for humans to explore. The air on most other planets is insufficient for humans to breathe, making it necessary to wear a space suit and oxygen equipment. The temperatures on these surfaces are much too hot or much too cold for any humans to withstand. Plus there would be complications with radiation, weather, and a lack of gravity. Robots have much less limitation in these areas and can survive much longer under these conditions.
Data Collection. Robots are designed for collecting scientific data. Robots are also able to perform many tasks at a time and can process information much quicker and more efficiently. Important scientific projects from detecting minerals, analyzing ground samples, and finding water are all performed more quickly and accurately (精确地) by robots.
Cost Effective. The use of robots have made the cost of space exploration much less expensive than it would cost for humans to do the work. In order to successfully send humans into space we would need to build a vehicle that can not only carry humans, but also enough food and water to keep them alive for the duration of the trip. Moreover, robots have no problems working for hours on end. Robots never complain, they don't require food or water, and they never need a bathroom break.
Space Travel. Over the past 30 years or so there have been many different types of robots used successfully in the exploration of space. Perhaps the most famous and successful robots are the Spirit and Opportunity who have both been exploring the surface of Mars. They have both been very successful with experiments on soil and rocks and have even found evidence of water in Mars' history.
44.According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A.The use of robots in space exploration cost more than the use of humans.
B.It may be dangerous for humans to explore the solar system except the Earth.
C.Both the Spirit and Opportunity have found the evidence of water in the Mars.
D.Many different types of robots have explored the space successfully.
45.Which column could the passage come from?
A.Education. B.Finance. C.Travel. D.Science.
46.The underlined word “withstand” most probably means “________”.
A.arise B.bear C.defeat D.diverse
47.What is the writer's attitude in writing this passage?
A.Negative. B.Persuasive. C.Subjective. D.Objective.
The European Union announced plans on Tuesday to temporarily ban the use of animal cloning for food production, while allowing imports of food derived from the offspring(后代) of clones from the United States and elsewhere.
The report from the European Commission followed a call by EU lawmakers in July for a total ban on food derived from cloned animals and their traditionally bred offspring, citing ethical concerns over the industrial production of cloned meat.
The Commission said a temporary five&year EU ban on cloning for food production was justified on animal welfare grounds, but said banning imports of food from the offspring of clones was unnecessary and would disrupt global trade.
“Food from cloned animals is safe. In fact, the scientific opinion is that it cannot be differentiated in any way from food from normally bred animals. The issue is animal welfare,” EU Health and Consumer Commissioner John Dalli told reporters.
Food derived from the offspring of clones presents no such animal welfare issues, and banning its sale and import would be impossible because the origin is untraceable, Dalli said.
“Such a prohibition would lead to a ban of imports of any food of animal origin (meat, milk and processed products) from third countries allowing the cloning technique,” the report said.
“We're not going to regulate for the world,” Dalli added.
But animal welfare groups criticized the Commission's decision, saying it had bowed to pressure from third countries.
“We do not accept the Commission's position that it would be impossible to enforce a ban that includes the offspring of cloned animals, as (other) meat traceability systems are already in place,” said Sonja Van Tichelen, director of the Eurogroup for Animals.
48.From the passage we can infer the ban is ________.
A.justified B.welcome C.controversial D.meaningless
49.The text is most probably a ________.
A.news report B.book review
C.newspaper ad D.science fiction story
50.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The ban is permanent.
B.The imports of food from the offspring of clones are not banned.
C.Animal welfare groups support the ban.
D.The ban has been into effect.
51.What might be the most suitable title for the passage?
A.The plans of the European Union
B.A temporary five&year EU ban
C.EU proposes ban on animal cloning for food
D.The danger of food derived from cloned animals

In a public lecture at the Royal Albert Hall,Professor Hawking also admitted that he was not active in studying while at Oxford University, where he studied physics, and that only the diagnosis that he might die young from motor neurone(神经元) disease made him concentrate on his work.
Professor Hawking said,“My sister Philippa could read by the age of 4 but then she was definitely brighter than me.” He said that he was unexceptional at school and was never further than halfway up his class. “My classwork was very untidy, and my handwriting was the despair of my teachers,”he said. “But my classmates gave me the nickname Einstein,so presumably they saw signs of something better.”
But he said that it was when doctors told him that he probably only had a few years to live at the age of 21 that galvanized him into focusing on his work and a period of productivity that resulted in some of his early breakthroughs. He said,“When you are faced with the possibility of an early death,it makes you realize that life is worth living and there are lots of things you want to do.”

Researchers have looked into this before, but without reaching any firm conclusions. She said, “So this finding from our new study was quite a surprise. We didn't really have any expectation of which direction it could go into.”
To sort out the confusion, Hashibe and her assistants used statistical techniques to, in effect, make one big study out of the earlier smaller studies.
文章第一段a new research suggests that if you drink enough coffee, it might help you avoid certain kinds of cancer.
从第三段中的…our friends' report cards had beautiful colors on them, black for passing, red for failing. She forced us to grow up into educated and honest adults.
The use of robots have made the cost of space exploration much less expensive than it would cost for humans to do the work.
But animal welfare groups criticized the Commission's decision…We do not accept the Commission's position that…,由此可以推断,人们对于这一禁令是有争议的(controversial)。justified “合乎情理的”; welcome “受欢迎的”; meaningless“没有意义的”。
由文中第三段的…but said banning imports of food from the offspring of clones was unnecessary and would disrupt global trade可知B项正确。由The Commission said a temporary five&year EU ban on cloning for food production was justified…
But my classmates gave me the nickname Einstein,so presumably they saw signs of something better.
But outstanding astrophysicist Stephen Hawking has admitted that he did not learn to read until he was eight years old和第二段开头句可知,他8岁之前和在大学里是非常懒惰的。
由第二段最后一句…only the diagnosis that he might die young from motor neurone disease made him concentrate on his work可知,是“运动神经元疾病”促使他有所作为。
He said,“When you are faced with the possibility of an early death,it makes you realize that life is worth living and there are lots of things you want to do.”

One possible version:
I would choose to save my mother. My mother has done so much for the family and she has not ability to save herself. For my wife, I must say sorry but I believe that as she is much younger and more powerful, maybe she can manage to save herself and even if she fails, she must understand my choice and sacrifice for the mother of us two.
One possible version:
I am an exchange student from China attending the Summer Camp here. Unluckily, I lost my favourite MP4 in the multimedia classroom in the second period yesterday afternoon. I value it very much because it is the prize I got when I won the Oral English Competition in my middle school in China. Still more, there are the American folk songs that I downloaded from which I will choose one to sing at the Chinese&American student party this weekend.
