There are so many groups and classes that cater to children under-five in Derbyshire and Staffordshire. The list is continually growing as an army of women, and some men, dedicate themselves to keeping our children entertained and giving us somewhere to go where our babies and under-fives can have fun whilst we socialise. No matter what you are looking for - music, craft, dance, drama, language, sports, stories, etc - there is something on offer not far from you.
What all the activities have in common, is that they teach your children to pay attention. A study recently found that toddlers who are better at concentrating, taking directions and persisting even after hitting difficulties have a 50 per cent greater chance of getting a degree when older!

Music Classes
Are you wanting to help your young baby, toddler or grandchild with their development ? Would like to meet like minded parents and
grandparents in a fun and relaxed environment, a great way to learn? Wondering where to start, and would like to learn new songs, and nursery rhymes, singing and dancing with other parents in small fun friendly groups? Learn lots of new songs written especially to help your little one with their development, confidence, speech, listening skills and for your child to have loads of instruments to explore, lots of props and parachutes, and gain lots of ideas to take home and try? Above all to have special time with your little one and create memories.
For over 14 years Little Hands Music and Boogie Babies have been helping very young babies and toddlers learn through music. The feedback from parents and grand parents has been fantastic as they see their little one develop and grow in confidence. Classes are kept deliberately small with lots of individual attention and each week is fresh and new. It is fabulous fun for babies and children from birth until school as they learn through music. We sit, we wiggle, we dance, we bounce, we sing, we giggle, and explore our surrounding up dancing and moving around. There are two age groups Boogie Babies and Little Hands Music with a maximum of 10 children per group. It's also a great way to make new friends and go to social events together.
Classes are held in Mayfield (near Ashbourne) and Uttoxeter. Come and see for yourself.

Teaching babies to swim turns out to be more than just fun. Baby swimmers have better balance and are also better at grasping at things than non-swimmers. This difference persists even when children are five years old, when babies who have been taught to swim still outperform their peers, research from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) shows. It also make sense from a safety point of view.
advises that you can take your baby swimming at any age, both before and after they have been vaccinated. It doesn't matter if they haven't completed their course of injections yet. Indeed, The Department of Health recommends that you can take your baby swimming from a very young age.
Babies are well suited to swimming. They have a natural dive reflex (called bradycardic response) where they close their mouths underwater and slow down their heart rate. They gradually grow out of this but it is still there at 6 months .
Apart from the science - seeing your baby swimming underwater with her eyes open and moving up towards the surface of the pool is amazing.

Toy Libraries
Like book libraries but with toys, games, puzzles and puppets to borrow.
Community toy libraries were first formed
in England in the late 1960's, initially for
children with additional needs. Like much
childcare provision at that time, they were
often run by local parents or carers,
sometimes with help from teachers and
other professionals. Today, there are an
estimated 1,000 toy libraries serving
around a quarter of a million children and
their families.
Toy libraries support
children's development through the
extension o provide a
place for parents and carers to meet and offer
support for parenting and parental
involvement in play.
