第三部分阅读理解(共20 小题,每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A, B, C和D)中,选出最佳选项.并在答且卡 上将该项涂黑。
Switzerland is the best place to be born in the world in 2013,and the US is just 16th. A new study made by the Economist Intelligence Unit says American babies will have a dimmer(暗淡)future than those born in Hong Kong,Ireland and even Canada. The EIU,a sister company of The Economist, tried to measure how well countries will provide the best opportunities for a healthy, safe and prosperous life in years to come.
People born in Switzerland will tend to be the happiest and have the best quality of life in terms of wealth, health and trust in public institutions, according to the analysis. The Scandinavian countries of Norway,Sweden and Denmark also all make the top five in a‘quality-of-lif e’index(指数)where it is best to be born next year.
One of the most important factors is being rich, but other factors come into play including crime, trust in public institutions and the health of family life. In total, the index takes into account 11 factors. These include fixed factors such as geography, others that change slowly over time such as demography (人口学) social and cultural characteristics, and the state of the world economy. The index also looks at income per head in 2030,which is roughly when children born in 2013 will reach adulthood. Small economies take up the top 10 countries, with Australia coming second and New Zealand and the Netherlands not too far behind.
Half of the top 10 countries are European, but only one,the Netherlands,is from the eurozone. The crisis-ridden south of Europe, including Greece,Portugal and Spain, falls behind despite the advantage of a favourable climate. Interestingly, the largest European economies-Germany,France and Britain-do not do particularly well. Nigeria has the unenviable(不值得羡慕的)title of being the worst country for a baby to enter the world in 2013. 56.According to the passage, the happiest people live in
A. Denmark
B. Switzerland
C. Germany
D. Nigeria 57.The factors of telling the best place to be born don’t include
A. economy

C. trust in public institutions
D. pollution 58.Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
A. The Economist Intelligence Unit is a company.
B. The Economist attempted to measure the best place to live.
C. The Scandinavian countries are hardly at the top of the list.
D. Half of the top 10 countries are from the eurozone. 59.The purpose of the text is to show people
A. the best place to be born in 2013
B. a new study made by the EIU
C. the worst country to be born in 2013 D. the factors of measuring the best place to be born
Heather Mills McCartney lives an admirable life, attending celebrity parties, meeting regularly with the rich and famous and doing meaningful work for charity. All who work with her admire and respect her. But Heather’s life hasn’t always been so easy. When Heather was only 9 years old, her mother abandoned her and her two brothers. It was expensive and she felt it was a waste to just throw away the old one. It occurred to her to set up an organization that could deliver used artificial limbs to Yugoslavia and other war-torn countries. Have you ever noticed the colour of the water in a river or stream after a heavy rainfall? What do you think caused this change in colour? It is soil that has been washed into the river from the riverbank or from the nearby fields.
Components of Soil
Soil is made up of a number of layers (层) , each having its own distinctive colour and texture. The upper layer is known as the litter. It acts like a blanket, limiting temperature changes and reducing water loss. The topsoil layer is made up of small particles of rock mixed with rotten plant and animal matter called humus (腐殖质), which is black and gives the topsoil its dark colour. This layer is usually rich in nutrients, oxygen, and water. Below the topsoil is the subsoil, a layer that contains more stones mixed with only small amounts of organic matter. This layer is lighter in colour because of the lack of humus. Beneath the soil lies a layer of bedrock.
Soil forms from the bottom up. Over time bedrock is attacked by rain, wind, frost, and snow. It is gradually broken down into smaller particles in a process called weathering. Plants begin to grow, and rotten materials enrich the topsoil. Most of the soil in Eastern Canada ,for example ,was formed from weathered rock that was exposed when the ice disappeared 12,000 years ago.
Water Beneath the Soil
Surface water collects and flows above the ground in lakes ,ponds, and rivers. Once in the soil or rock, it is called groundwater. Gravity pulls groundwater through the soil in a process called percolation(渗透). Eventually the water reaches a layer called the water table. Under this is bedrock through which water cannot percolate. As water percolates downward, it dissolves organic matter and minerals from the soil and carries them to deeper layers. This causes a serious problem because plants require these nutrients for growth.
Soil can be acidic, neutral, or basic. The pH of the soil is determined by the nature of the rock from which it was formed, and by the nature of the plants that grow and rot in it.
The acidity of rain and snow can lower the pH of the groundwater that enters the soil. By burning fossil fuels such as coal ,oil and gasoline, humans have been contributing to higher levels of acidity in many soils. When fossil fuels are burned, gases are released into the air and then fall back to earth as acid rain. Acid soil increases the problem of carrying nutrients to lower soil levels. As nutrients are removed, soil is less fertile. Plants grow more slowly in acidic soil, and also become easily attacked by diseases. 68.The layer of soil that provides necessary nutrients for plant growth is called________. A. litter B. topsoil
D. subsoil 69.According to the text, which of the following is NOT true? A. Soil forms from weathered rock on the earth surface. B. The deeper layer of soil is darker in colour than the surface soil. C. Air pollution is partially responsible for acid soil. D. Groundwater tends to carry away nutrients for plant growth. 70.We can infer from the passage that the water table lies________. A. between the topsoil layer and the subsoil layer B. in the subsoil layer above bedrock C. between the subsoil layer and bedrock D. in the bedrock layer beneath the subsoil 71.The underlined word “dissolve” is used to express the idea that organic matter and minerals from soil are________. A. rushed away into the river B. cleaned and purified by water C. destroyed and carried away by water D. mixed with water and become part of it
Tensions have erupted over some barren rocks in the Pacific that you may never have heard of, but stay tuned—this is a boundary dispute that could get ugly and some day have far-reaching consequences for China, Japan, Taiwan and the United States.
The islands in dispute are called the Senkaku chain by Japan, the Diaoyu islands by China, and the Diaoyutai by Taiwan. All three claim the islands, which are really just five small islands and three barren rocks northeast of Taiwan, 200 miles off the Chinese coast.
The latest conflict occurred when a Chinese fishing boat collided with two Japanese naval ships trying to stop it near the islands. The Japanese prevented the Chinese captain from leaving the place for questioning and the two countries have been exchanging angry protests.
The reason to worry is that nationalists in both China and Taiwan see the slands as unquestionably theirs and think that their government has been weak in claiming this authority.
So far, wiser heads have generally won the argument on each side, but at some point a weakened Chinese leader might try to gain the legal right with the public by pushing the issue and recovering the islands. It would be a dangerous game and would have a disastrous impact on China-Japan relations, but if successful it would raise the popularity of the Chinese government.
In reality, of course, there is zero chance that the U.S.will honor its treaty(条约) with Japan over a few barren rocks. We're not going to risk a nuclear conflict with China over some islands that may well be China's.But if we don't help, our security relationship with Japan will be at the breaking point.
So which country has a better claim to the islands? My feeling is that it's China, although the answer isn't clear-cut.Chinese navigational records show the islands as Chinese for many centuries, and a 1783 Japanese map shows them as Chinese as well.Japan purported to "discover" the islands only in 1884 and took control of them by force only in 1895 when it also grabbed Taiwan.
The best approach would be for China and Japan to agree to refer the dispute to the International Court of Justice, but realistically that won't happen. And since some believe that the area is rich with oil and gas reserves, the claims from each side have become more insistent.
As Chinese nationalism grows, as China's navy and ability to project power in the ocean gains, we could see some military conflicts over the islands. Taken from NewYork Times 72.The underlined word "purported" (in Para.5) is closest in meaning to "_____". A.happened
B.claimed
C.pretended
D.intended 73.The latest conflict referred to in the passage occurred because _____. A.the Japanese government has bought the Diaoyu Islands from the Liyuans B.two Japanese naval ships sailed in the Chinese sea around the Diaoyu Islands C.the Japanese kept the captain of a fishing boat from returning for questioning D.A fishing boat collided with two Japanese naval ships by design in the Japanese sea 74.Which of the following is the author's personal idea? A.It is the two Japanese naval ships that are to blame for the conflict. B.It is the Chinese captain of a fishing boat that is to blame for the conflict. C.It is the U.S.that will honor its treaty with Japan over a few barren rocks. D.It is China that has a better claim to the islands because of its navigational records. 75.Why does the author think neither China nor Japan will agree to refer the dispute to the international Court of justice? A.because the claim from both sides has become more insistent. B.because Japan has navy and ability to power the Diaoyu Islands. C.because China is developing so quickly that it will declare a war on Japan. D.because the U.S.won't be involved in the dispute between China and Japan.
