　　During World War Ⅱ, Europe was occupied (占领) by the Germans. A lot of people got away to Britain. Among them was one Belgian (比利时人) named Victor Valveli. He was very patriotic (爱国的) . On the last day of 1940, he asked his country men to write the letter “V” wherever they could to show their decision to win the final victory. In a few days, the letter “V” appeared everywhere, even in the German barracks (营房) and the living quarters of Nazi officers (纳粹军官).
　　Later, the letter “V” spread to the other occupied countries in Europe. Because it was simple and meaningful, it soon became very popular. When friends met, they stretched out their middle and index finger (食指) to greet each other.
　　At that time, in many restaurants, knives and forks were places in such a way as to form a “V”. And in some clock, factories clocks were purposely (故意地) stopped at 11:05 to show the sign of “V”.
