Back then everyone seemed to be riding a bicycle. Millions of them, all black. Cars were rare. Yet since my arrival in Beijing last year, I've found the opposite is true. There are millions of cars. However, people still use their bicycles to get around. For many, it's the easiest and cheapest way to travel today. Bicycles also come in different colors―silver, green, red, blue, yellow, whatever you want. It's fun watching people biking. They rush quickly through crossroads, move skillfully through traffic, and ride even on sidewalks.Bicycles allow people the freedom to move about that cars just can't provide.Eager to be part of this aspect of Chinese culture, I decided to buy a bicycle. Great weather accompanied my great buy. I immediately jumped up on my bicycle seat and started home.My first ride home was orderly. To be safe, I stayed with a “pack” of bikers while cars on the streets came running swiftly out of nowhere at times. I didn't want to get hit. So I took the ride carefully.Crossing the streets was the biggest problem. It was a lot like crossing a major highway back in the United States. The streets here were wide, so crossing took time, skill and a little bit of luck.I finally made it home. The feeling on the bicycle was amazing. The air hitting my face and going through my hair was wonderful. I was sitting on top of the world as I passed b y places and people. Biking made me feel alive.21. According to the author, why are bicycles still popular in China today?A.Because they are traditional and safe.B.Because they are convenient and inexpensive.C.Because they are colorful and available.D.Because they are fast and environment friendly.22. The author decided to buy a bicycle because he intended ____.A.to ride it for funB.to use it for transportC.to experience local cultureD.to improve his riding skills23. How did the author feel about his street crossing?A.It was boring.
B.It was difficult.
C.It was lively.
D.It was wonderful.24. Which of the following best describes the author's biking experience?A.The author enjoyed showing off his biking skills.B.The author was annoyed by the air while riding.C.The author was praised by the othe r bikers.D.The author took great pleasure in biking.BA popular saying goes, “Sticks and stone may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”
However, that's not really true. Words have the power to build us up or tear us down. It doesn't matter if the words come from someone else or
ourselves-the positive and negative effects are just as lasting.
We all talk to ourselves sometimes. We're usually too embarrassed to admit it, though. But we really shouldn't be, because more and more experts believe talking to ourselves out loud is a healthy habit.
This self-talk helps us motivate ourselves, remember things, solve problems, and calm ourselves down. Beware, though, that as much as 77% of self-talk tends to be negative. So in order to stay positive, we should only speak words of encouragement to ourselves. We should also be
quick to give ourselves a pat on the back. The next time you finish a project, do well in a test, or finally clean your room, join me in saying, “Good job !”
Often, words come out of our mouths without our thinking about the ef but we should be aware that our words cause certain responses to others. For example, when returning an item to a store, we might use warm friendly language during the exchange. And the clerk will probably respond in a similar manner. Or we can use harsh, critical language, which will most likely cause the clerk to be defensive. Words possess power because of their lasting effects. Many of us regret something we once said. And we remember unkind words said to us! Before speaking, we should always ask ourselves:Is it true? Is it loving? Is it needed? If what we want to say doesn't pass this test, then it's better left unsaid.
Words possess power both positive and negative. Those around us receive encouragement when we speak positively. We can offer hope, build self-esteem (自尊) and motivate others to do their best. Negative words destroy all those things. Will we use our words to hurt or to heal? The choice is ours.25. The author argues in the first paragraph that
.A. words have lasting effects on us
B. words will never hurt us at allC. positive effects last longer than negative effects
D. negative words may let us down26. Why should we not feel embarrassed when talking to ourselves?A. Almost everybody has the habit of talking to oneself.B. Talking to ourselves is believed to be good for our health.C. Talking to ourselves helps us to solve all the problems.D. It does harm to have "self-talk" when we are alone.27. Which of the following statements would the author agree to?A. Unkind words are more likely to be forgotten.B. It is better to think twice before talking to others.C. Words always possess long positive effects.D. Kind words are sometimes not needed at all.28. Why should we talk in a friendly way when returning an item to a store?A. Because kind words build up complex relationships.B. Because the clerk in a store is hard to deal with.C. Because friendly words cause positive responses.D. Because critical language may hurt your feelings.CIf you plan on visiting to Fiji, you are probably looking for some fun things to do. Below are four unusual places. The Poseidon Resort

"All these words are what makes me beautiful!"The activity is part of a program called Beautiful Me. "Our goal is to offer the program to as many girls as possible across the United States." About 6,000 girls have benefited from it due to her efforts. Beautiful Me organizers train teachers to present the program material to small groups of girls. It includes hands-on art activities, role-playing games about understanding body language and discussions on how to build friendships. Schools and groups present the program when they are ready.
"The Beautiful Me program helps girls understand their feelings, solve problems and get along better in and out of school. Girls and women who have built healthy levels of self-esteem are more likely to be better friends to others and know how to solve conflicts," says Tuffy.Anna says she has learned all of that from the program. Start there. Four steps will make it easier for you to get started
Maybe you already know it. It could be your social life, your health or money situation.
Take time to focus on this because if you really want something then it becomes a lot easier to keep going.
Choose one thing or habit to focus on for now. If you have found several things or habits you would like to focus on, then choose to focus on just one at a time.
You'll probably not have the time and energy to change three things at once even though you really hope and think you can.
Take small steps. This is very important.
The feeling that something is too big or difficult is one of the most common things to hold people back from taking action.
The plan sounds so good in your head. But when you carry it out then you can't really take much action or move as fast as you thought.
Don' t get stuck in planning. Or think that you will get started tomorrow or next week. Get the ball rolling instead. Do that today by just taking one small and practical step towards what you want.A. Wh y am I telling you this?B. Make a small change if possible.C. Think about what you really want to change.D. You can do what you can with what you have right now.E. On the other hand, people also tend to think highly of their own power.F. Ask yourself: what is one small step I can take right now to get the ball rolling?G. we all know, life is full of dreams and having a good dream is of great importance in our daily life.
a good dream, people can’t make progress and countries can’t develop. And I hold the strong belief
everyone, whether he is old or young, poor or rich, junior or senior, does have a good dream! After all, dreaming is certainly a positive part of our life, and
(wish) for good things, however, costs nothing!
What’s more, it is important to fly our dreams, especially for those
are senior high school students. It is high time for them to fly their dreams. If they can’t let out dreams fly, the dream would just be
dream, not reality!Therefore,
is no wonder that so many people have a dream since their childhood. With a nice dream, China succeeded in hosting the 29th Olympic Games in 2008; with a nice dream, Hong Kong
(return) to the motherland peacefully in 1997; with a nice dream, Yuan Long Ping rids with a nice dream, Michael Jordon becomes the most pop with a nice dream I can stand on this stage to compete in the final English speech contest. And with an aim of achieving success, I must do the best!So my good friends, if you want to realize your dream, please do not be afraid in face of difficulties or give up in face of failure
lose your dream in face of pains. You must keep going forward
