W.G. Lewis - Original Mid 20th Century Watercolour. Inscribed below. From an album of watercolours by W.G. Lewis. Unsigned. In fine condition. From a large collection of works we have acquired by William George Lewis () and Eileen Lewis. There is little on record about either artist except that W.G. Lewis was a professional illustrator known for his work for Tablet Magazine, working mainly around the mid-20th century. It appears that Eileen was the daughter of W.G., inheriting her father’s talent – she continued to paint into the 1990s. Evidently from an artistic family, one painting by W.G. depicts his father sketching and reference is also made to his mother painting.W.G. and Eileen were both predominantly watercolour artists and they painted similar subjects in a similar style. Favouring landscapes, both artists sketched in albums dedicated to a particular location, suggesting that they would tour the UK and paint on location. Capturing lakes and mountains in areas of outstanding beauty, W.G. and Eileen painted many scenes around Scotland, Wales and the Lake District. Eileen also painted in Cornwall, Somerset and the Peak D W.G. painted in Yorkshire, Suffolk, Sussex, Dorset, Devon and also the Loire area of France. Some of the paintings are signed or monogrammed and many are inscribed, identifying the exact location of a scene. Light, fresh and skilfully composed, their watercolours show fine attention to detail in the natural landscape and a love of picturesque British landscape views. In addition to landscapes, Eileen’s paintings include skilled renderings of wild animals, copied from book illustrations. The additional photo shows a rare painting by Eileen depicting an informal family scene from memory in 1982, featuring herself as a child along with ‘June and Geoff’, possibly siblings or a sister and uncle.

Color Printing in the Nineteenth Century, a new exhibition in the Special Collections Exhibition
Gallery of the Morris Library, University of Delaware,
is curated by Iris Snyder of the Special
Collections Department.
An illustrated catalog of the exhibition can be purchased by contacting the Office of the Director of Libraries, University of Delaware, Newark, Delaware .
The nineteenth century was the turning point for technical development in color illustration.
the beginning of the century, books with color plates were hand-colored by the artist, using
techniques dating back to the Renaissance.
A hundred years later, the photo-reproductive
techniques and the steam-driven printing press took printing out of the hands of the artist and
introduced processes which would be used until the computer revolution of our day.
Printing in the Nineteenth Century documents these changes in color printing technology by
displaying some of the finest examples of books illustrated in color, published from the last
quarter of the eighteenth century until the beginning of the twentieth century.
Among the books on exhibit are the two masterworks of the nature painter John James
Audubon, The Birds of America and The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America, the charming
children's books of Kate Greenaway and Walter Crane, and beautiful hand-colored botanical
illustrations from The Botanical Magazine, the most famous English horticultural periodical.
Color Printing in the Nineteenth Century is a particularly appropriate topic for an exhibition at the
University of Delaware Library.
One of the Library's great strengths is its collections on the
history and technology of printing and the book arts. The Library's Special Collections
Department houses a wide range of materials documenting the history and technology of printing,
publishing, paper-making, and all aspects of the book arts.
