A teacher had been much annoyed by some of his boys whistling during school hours. At last he was obliged to threaten with punishment any one who should repeat the offence.

The next morning, when the room was very quiet, a loud whistle was heard! The scholars were very much startled, and the teacher at once looked around to discover the offender.

The blame fell on a bad boy who was often in mischief. When charged, he strongly denied the act: yet his words were not believed, for I am sorry to say he wa so the master brought him up for punishment.

Seeing what was about to take place, a slender little fellow, about nine years old, who had been anxiously watching the proceedings, sprang from his seat.

True courage may also be shown by refusing to do that which we know to be wrong, though bad companions may laugh at us, and call us cowards, for saying No.

九. Raymond (1)
　　Everybodydreamsofdoing something important. As a boy Raymond dreamed of being a scientist,infact, he is a postman now.
　　Raymond is an active young man. He livesby the saying(格言)“If you can't live the life you love, love the life you live”He greets everyone with a big smileand afriendly“Hi, howare you?”And he really wants to know! It's hardto feel unhappy when we hear him whistling(吹口哨) happilyupanddownthe street.

　　每个人(everybody)都梦想(dream of)做些重要的事。雷蒙德小时候梦想成为一名科学家(scientist)，实际上(in fact)他现在是一名邮递员(postman)。

　　Jimmy's picturesweredifferentfromother people's because he never painted it on all of the paper. He painted on half of it, and the other half was always empty.
　　“That's very clever,”everybody said.“Nobody else does that!”They all believed that the boy was a pioneer in painting.
　　One day, somebody bought one of Jimmy's pictures and then said to him,“Please tell me this, Jimmy. Why do you paint on thebottomhalfof your pictures, but not on thetophalf ?”
　　“Because I'm small,”Jimmy said,“and my brushes don't reach very high.”

monsters under beds
I knocked on the floorboards and
scrambled back under my covers I waited
with a new monster appear what would he
be like with his snorting be as cheerful
as games when I heard some creaking
under my bed I knew that the substitute
monster had arrived do you knew said
allo breathy voice my name is Herbert
that I would be your months before the
evening pervert
what kind of name is that for a monster
you don't sound scary at all
hey if you ever scared a kid before will
know what i have read all the best books

scratchy clause i asked know what I have

fingers at the slimy tail slithering
over the foot of my bed and that's when
I noticed the bow
are you a girl monster of course I am
she snapped i'm cynthia do you have a
problem with that
yeah i do I admitted I definitely need a
boy monster boy monsters of the boys and
girl monsters are for girls
everybody knows the head well aren't you
are picky one she sniffed and then she
was God was I being too picky
no I knew that my monster needed to be

menacing I mean the whole point of
having a monster after all was to keep
me in bed imagining all the scary stuff
that happened if I got out then I heard
shuffling noise and some slobbering a
fourth monster was under my bed huh
hey the names Mac one look at his claws
bros that Matt was a bead scruffy boy
monster i simmered maybe this one would
work out those are excellent Claus but
you have a long tail
I leaned over to see know why tailless
stumpy max slept but i do have an
unusually long tom
why would I be afraid of a long tongue I
asked or don't know he said trying to
sound terrifying you know will know what
I might kill I fell back out the bed
laughing you know if you're not even
going to try to work with me back wynd I
held in my giggles I really don't think
you should somebody await you warn
cancer reject fight monsters and one
time I reject five monsters tonight I
interrupted my regular monster went
finishing up maybe just left because
you're so picky fine
Omar here but i wouldn't expect another
monster tonight if I was you
how was I ever going to get to sleep
without my monster
I was surprised to hear more creaking
under the bed
loud creaking scratching my uh I thought
no more monsters were going to appear
tonight I said sorry I'm like good show
it was game i thought i would enjoy
fishing but I didn't want its most
scared too easily
no challenge at all you however are
challenging my friend you're almost too
old to be afraid of monsters you keep me
on my toes are told delicious a bit
queer this gave stomach rumbled with
hunger now if you don't mind I'd like to
start the evening with an honors puddle
I peeked over the edge of the bed green
ooze red sounds and the bed trembled as
Gabe Roder spiked to help it was daring
me to guess where he might pop up so we
had some substitute monsters to my
gateshead sharpening his claws on my
bedpost for you spare
then gave started tapping I could tell
he wanted to know if I still needed him
know where the monster been scary like
you i giggled diving under my covers and
pulling them up tight to the blanket i
heard games soft comforting snorts haha
i knew it they were made for each other
or he growled and my blanket started to
slip off the bed I new game was ready to
eat now if you could please stick out
your foot p said I'd like to nibble your
pinky I want my blanket back up and
scratch my feet and so Cape couldn't get
them no toes tonight but you can have
this i offered pushing a pillow off the
I didn't even hear it in the floor
he was back the news was perfect
everything was back to normal i shiver
hmm i'd be asleep in no time

When I was a child of seven years old, my friends, on a holiday, filled my pocket with coppers. I went at once to a shop where they sold toys for children. Being charmed with the sound of a whistle that I had seen by the way, in the hands of another boy, I handed over all my money for one. I then came home, and went whistling all over the house, much pleased with my whistle, but disturbing all the family. My brothers and sisters and cousins, when I told of the bargain I had made, said I had given four times as much as the whistle was worth. They put me in mind of what good things I might have bought with the rest of the money, and laughed at me so much for my folly that I cried with vexation. Thinking about the matter gave me more chagrin than the whistle gave me pleasure.
　　This, however, was afterwards of use to me, for the impression continued on my mind, so that often, when I was tempted to buy something I did not need, I said to myself, &Don't give too much for the whistle,& and I saved my money. As I grew up, came into the world, and observed the actions of men, I thought I met with many, very many, who &gave too much for the whistle&.
　　If I knew a miser who gave up every kind of comfortable living, all the pleasure of doing good to others, all the esteem of his fellow citizens and the joys of friendship, for the sake of gathering and keeping wealth—&Poor man,& said I, &you pay too dear for your whistle.& When I met a man of pleasure, who did not try to improve his mind or his fortune but merely devoted himself to having a good time, perhaps neglecting his health, &Mistaken man,& said I, &you are providing pain for yourself, you are paying too dear for your whistle.& If I saw someone fond of appearance who had fine clothes, fine houses, fine furniture, fine earrings, all above his fortune, and for which he had run into debt, &Alas,& said I, &he has paid dear, very dear, for his whistle.& In short the miseries of mankind are largely due to their putting a false value on things—to giving &too much for their whistles&.
