5At the age of three, I was discovered to be totally deaf. Having consulted many specialists, my parents made a(n) 31 that would forever alter my future. 32 sending me to a special
education school for the deaf, they chose an ordinary one for me. All of my schoolmates and teachers there would have 33 hearing. One morning, she asked the class a question. I 39 her lips and immediately raised my hand. Here was an opportunity to impress the powerful teacher and even my classmates. Although a little afraid when I heard my named called, I felt unusually 40 because I was sure I had the right answer. I took a deep breath and Her response 42 all of us. I’m not going to say luck, talent, and circumstances don’t come into play because they do . Some people are born into the right family while others are born with great intelligence, and that’s just the reality of how life is. However, to succeed in life, one first needs to set a goal and then gradually make it more practical. And, in addition to that, in order to get really good at something, one needs to spend at least 10,000 hours studying and practicing. To become great at certain things, it’ll require even more time, time that most people won’t put in. This is a big reason why many successful people advise you to do something you love. If you don’t enjoy what you do, it is going to feel like unbearable pain and will likely make you quit well before you ever become good at it. When you see people exhibiting some great skills or having achieved great success, you know that they have put in a huge part of their life to get there at a huge cost. It’s sometimes easy to think they got lucky or they were born with some rare talent, but thinking that way does you no good, and there’s a huge chance that you’re wrong anyway. Whatever you do, if you want to become great at it, you need to work day in and day out, almost to the point of addiction, and over a long period of time. If you’re not willing to put in the time and work, don’t expect to receive any rewards. Consistent, hard work won’t guarantee you the level of success you may want, but it will guarantee that you will become really good at whatever it is you put all that work into. 51. Paragraph 1 mainly talks about ______. A. the meaning of success B. the reasons for success C. the standards of success D. the importance of success 52. Successful people suggest doing what one loves because ______. A. work makes one feel pain B. one tends to enjoy his work C. it takes a lot of time to succeed D. one gives up his work easily 53. What can we infer from Paragraph 4? A. People sometimes succeed without luck or talent. B. Successful people like to show their great skills. C. People need to achieve success at the cost of life. D. It helps to think that luck or talent leads to success. 54. What is the main theme of the passage? A. Having a goal is vital to success. B. Being good is different from being great. C. Luck, talent and family help to achieve success. D. One cannot succeed without time and practice. WHEN there are some strangers in front of us, which of them will we trust? According to a new study in the online PLOS One, people make their decisions to trust others largely based on their faces. Your appearance can do a lot for you, especially if you are in the financial industry. The more trustworthy you look, the more likely people will buy what you’re selling. Researchers from Britain’s University of Warwick Business School, University College London, and Dartmouth College, US, did a number of experiments. The research team used computer software to make 40 faces, from the least to the most trustworthy-looking. The study said that the difference between a trustworthy face and one that isn’t as trustworthy comes from features that look slightly angry or slightly happy, even when the face is at rest. However, a slightly happy face is more likely to be trusted. Researchers gave participants some money and asked them which face they trusted to invest the money for them. Then researchers gave some good and bad information about the people with these faces, and asked the participants again whom they trusted. The results showed that even if they got different information, the participants didn’t change their choices. They were still more likely to invest their money with the more trustworthy-looking faces. Chris Olivola, one of the study’s authors, said in the University of Warwick’s press release: “It seems we are still willing to go with our own instincts about whether we think someone looks like we can trust them. The temptation to judge strangers by their faces is hard to resist.” 55. Which of the following can be a proper title for this passage? A. What kind of face do you trust? B. Who did the experiments? C. Why do you trust him or her? D. Why did they do the experiments? 56. According to the study, which of the following faces is most likely to be trusted? A. A sad face. B. A smiling face. C. A crying face. D. An angry face. 57. Which of the following about the experiment is TRUE? A. The trustworthy faces were given good information. B. Researchers took photos of the 40 people’s faces in college. C. Most participants gave their money to the trustworthy-looking faces. D. Participants liked to choose the faces with good information. 58. What did the researchers learn from their experiment? A. People can’t refuse temptations. B. People always do things with their instincts. C. People often judge strangers by their faces. D. People don’t trust strangers with sad faces. We all know the importance of curiosity, and here are some tips on how to develop it. Keep an open mind. This is essential if you are to have a curious mind. Be open to learning, unlearning, and relearning things. 36 Therefore, you should be prepared to accept this possibility and change your mind. 37 Most people just accept the world as it is. This way, they will certainly lose the “holy curiosity”. Try to dig deeper beneath the surface of what is around you. A sure way to dig deeper beneath the surface is asking questions. What, why, when, who, where, and how are the questions curious people always ask. Don’t label anything as boring. Whenever you label something as boring, you close one more door of possibilities. Curious people are unlikely to consider things boring. 38 Even if they don’t yet have time to explore them, they will leave the door open to be visited another time. Take learning as something fun. If you see learning as a burden, there’s no way you will want to dig deeper into anything. That will just make the burden heavier. However, if you think of learning as something fun, you will naturally want to dig deeper. 39 Read diverse materials. It will introduce you to the possibilities and excitement of other worlds which may attract your interest in exploring further. One easy way to do this is through reading diverse materials. 40 It’ll feed your mind with the excitement of a new world. A. Never take things as granted. B. Don’t spend too much time on just one world. C. Try to pick a book or magazine on a new subject. D. Some things you know and believe might be wrong. E. It doesn’t matter that you don’t agree to others’ opinions. F. Instead, they always see these things as a door to an exciting new world. G. So look at life through the glasses of fun and enjoy the learning process. Do you read reviews after you see a movie? I use to do that, but I usually regretted. I read so much about a movie on advance that I often ended up not go to see it at all. The writers point out everything that is wrong with the film, but seldom mentions anything good about one. They also tell many things and even the ending of the movie. Lately I have changed way I choose movies to watch. I read reviews afterwards if necessary. What is very importance to me is that I don’t watch the talk shows in that people discuss movies. And I don’t ask other people how they like of it. Now, I enjoy myself even more.

R并=r, U并=E
