lay强调把某物放置或使某物处于水平位置;而set指使某物处于直立的位置;put强调把某物移进或移出某处或某位置,或使处于某种地位、情况或关系的动作;place则不强调动作,而强调某一确定的地点或情况。例如:

这两个词的共同意思是“放”“放置”。其区别是：
1.lay是指将某物平放、横放或摊开放;deposit含有安全保管的意味,并不强调以何种方式放。例如:

3.deposit是正式用语;lay是一般用语。
lie的过去式与lay的现在式同形,故极易混淆,其实这两个词区别很大。lay是及物动词,意为“把…置于”,而lie是不及物动词,意为“躺着,平放,位于”。前者表动作,后者表状态。试比较以下两个句子：
He laid his dictionary on the shelf.
他把词典放在书架上。
The dictionary is lying on the shelf.
那本词典放在书架上。
这些动词均有“放”之意。
:lay指小心地把人或物平放或横放，侧重动作安稳。
:place较正式用词，指把某物放在一个正确的位置上，侧重动作的正确。
:put普通用词，含义较广泛。指把人或物置于某处，并将其留在该处。
:set普通用词，指为了某种目的而将人或物放在一定位置上。指物时多指立着放。

误 A clerk laid a slip of paper.
正 A clerk laid a slip of paper on the desk.
析 lay作“放”解时,后面往往要跟一个表示地点的介词短语,否则意思不完整。
他喝醉了躺在大街上。
误 He was drunk and laid in the street.
正 He was drunk and lay in the street.
析 laid是lay(放置)的过去式和过去分词,而表示“躺”,应该说lie,它的过去式和过去分词分别是lay和lain。
玩具散放在地板各处。
误 The toys were laying about on the floor.
正 The toys were lying about on the floor.
析 lay是及物动词,表示“把…放(在某处)”。lie是不及物动词,表示“躺在(某处)”。应注意区别。
