Agnes Miller was one of the earliest leaders of the women's liberation movement in the United States. She was born on a farm in Missouri in 1892. She had a very happy life as a child. She was the only daughter and the youngest child of five. Her parents and her brothers always treated her as their favorite.
In 1896 the family moved to Chicago. Three years later they moved back to St. Louis where Agnes spent the rest of her childhood. She enjoyed her years in school and was a very good student of mathematics. She was also quite good as a painter.
It was when Agnes went off to college that she first learned that women were not treated as equals. She didn't like being treated unequally but she tried not to notice it. After graduating from college she tried to get a job in her major field, physics. She soon found it was almost impossible for a woman.
Agnes spent a full year looking for a job. Finally she gave up in anger. She began writing letters to various newspapers. An editor in New York liked her ideas very much. He specially liked her style. He asked her to do a series of stories on the difficulties that women had in finding a job. And there she began her great fight for equal rights for women.

Researchers have discovered a link between drinking and thinking. A moderate amount of alcohol may help us keep our mental abilities as we age. Brain scans show alcohol abuse(酗酒) kills brain cell. But little is known about the effects of life-long drinking. So moderate drinkers may want to toast new findings from researchers at Duke, and Indiana Universities. Dr. Joe Christian of Indiana Universities says men who have one or two drinks each day retain slightly stronger comprehension skills than the non-drinker or the heavy drinker. The doctor and his colleagues gave mental tests to nearly 4000 male twins between the ages of 66 and 76. The moderate drinkers had slightly better reasoning ability than his brothers who drink more or less did. Other studies have found that alcohol in moderation can help the heart. But alcohol abuse can cause bone loss and other health problems. This study was presented at an alcoholism meeting in San Antonio.
1)、Recent research has found about drinking that heavy drinking is not necessarily harmful to one's health.
2)、Moderate drinkers would feel pleased about the new research finding.
3)、The result of the study was first made public at a conference.
4)、Other studies have found that alcohol in moderation can hardly help the heart.
5)、Brain scans show alcohol abuse kills brain cell.

Hello! Greetings from the future! My name's Linda. I'm ten years old and live in the year 3044. We call it the year 58AL. AL means &After Living&. You see, 58 years ago, there were too many people on Earth and there was too much pollution(污染). The only way to save the Earth is to send people into space. So lots of people, including my family, went into space. However, there were still a few people choosing to live on Earth.
We're now living in a new city on Mars(火星). Life here is very nice, and we are happy in our new home. I have a friend called John on Earth. Every week I use our school's time machine to send messages to him.
The food here is different from your food: we take medicine and drink juice to keep healthy. My history book says you eat meat from other animals! That is strange to me. We don't eat any animals or bread.
Every day I catch the school spaceship and fly to school. We don't have schools. We meet our learning guides (you called them teachers) in different places and solve(解决)problems together.
1)、The year 3014 is the year 28 AL.
2)、Lots of people went into space to have a different life from Earth.
3)、Linda takes medicine for dinner.
4)、Linda sends messages to John by spaceship.
5)、Linda takes medicine and drinks juice to keep healthy.

When John and Victoria Falls arrived in New York City for one-year stay, they did not bring very many things with them. They had planned either to live in a furnished apartment or to buy used furniture. But they soon learned about a new system that more and more people are using. The renting of home furnishings (bed, tables, dishes, and so on) has become one of America's fastest growing businesses.
What kinds of people rent their home furnishings instead of buying them? People who are international business or government officials, foreign students, airline workers, young married couples-people whose job or business may force them to move frequently from one city to another. Young people with little money do not want to buy cheap furniture that they may soon dislike. They prefer to wait until they have enough money to buy furniture they really like. A characteristic of American culture that has become almost a tradition is to respect the self-made man-the man who has risen to the top through his own efforts, usually beginning by working with his hands. While the leader in business or industry or the college professor occupies a higher social position and commands greater respect in the community than the common laborer or even the skilled factory worker, he may take pains to point out that his father started life in America as a farmer or laborer of some sort.
This attitude toward manual (体力的) labor is now still seen in many aspects of American life. One is invited to dinner at a home that is not only comfortably but even luxuriously (豪华地) furnished and in which there is every evidence of the fact that the family has been able to afford foreign travel, expensive hobbies, and college educat yet the hostess &probably will cook the dinner herself, will serve it herself and will w furthermore, the dinner' will not consist merely of something quickly and easily assembled from contents of various cans and a cake or a pie bought at the nearby bakery. On the contrary, the hostess usually takes pride in careful preparation of special dishes. A professional may talk about washing the car, digging in his flowerbeds, painting the house. His wife may even help with these things, just as he often helps her with the dishwashing. The son who is away at college may wait on table and wash dishes for his living, or during the summer he may work with a construction gang on a highway in order to pay for his education.

Passage 10
How men first learnt to inv in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thought and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communi and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to present those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words.
The power of words, then, lies in their associations-the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning
and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sa and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something increases.
Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words.
