I feel uncertain that sleep is one of those things that do the nailing down,” Professor Stickgold said.Professor Stickgold's team trained the 24 people to tell the direction of three diagonal bars (斜线) shown for a sixtieth of a second on a computer screen full of horizontal stripes (水平线).Half the subjects were kept awake that night, while the others slept. Both groups were allowed to sleep for the second and third nights to make up for any differences in tiredness between the volunteers. Those who slept the first night were much better at remembering the task while the second group showed no improvement in spite of enjoying two nights of catch-up sleep. A further study by scientists at the Medical University at Lubeck in Germany showed that memories are laid down in two stages during the night. The first is during the deep, so-called “slow wave” sleep, which usually takes place in the first half of the night. The second, and less important stage happens during the periods of dreaming or “rapid eye movement (REM)”. When people don't sleep well in the first half of the night, their memory consolidation is almost the same as having no sleep at all.1. Which of the following statements is CORRECT according to the first paragraph?A. It is necessary to burn the midnight oil before an exam or interview.B. Sleep speeds up the loss of memory.C. Man should have a good sleep if he wants to keep a good memory.D. Staying up late will make you better prepared for an exam or interview.2. It can be inferred from the fourth paragraph that________. A. some process helps memories to be washed out of the brainB. Professor Stickgold is doubtful about whether sleep can make memories worseC. some memories normally influence the function of the brainD. sleep may can improve the condition of memories3. How was the research conducted by Professor Stickgold?A. The subjects were divided into two groups.B. All the subjects were kept awake for 3 nights.C. One group slept at the first night but was kept awake the next two nights.D. One group was kept awake for 3 nights but the other slept for the second and third nights.4. What was the study result of the scientists' at the Medical University at Lubeck?A. REM sleep is not important at all for the consolidation for memory.B. Intellectual performance mainly depends on the slow wave sleep period.C. When people sleep poorly in the first half of the night, it is almost the same as having no sleep at all.D. REM sleep is as important as slow wave sleep in terms of memory recall.5. The BEST title of this passage is ________.A. Sleep Necessary for MemoriesB. The Importance of the First Stage of SleepC. Studies Made by Scientists About SleepD. The Scientists' Achievement in Sleep ResearchB字数:290&完成时间:10分钟&难度:★★The blockbuster film Titanic has brought millions of dollars and thousands of people to the theaters and continues to touch people today in their homes. Why is this film so successful? It is a combination of many different things. Among these are many different elements. Looking at some of these elements will show how the director and others involved were able to create an emotionally charged movie that appealed to millions. The film uses one thematic(主题的) element called The Truth of Human Nature. The two main characters seem to represent noble people. Most of the other characters in the film are shown as non-tolerant, rude and cold-hearted people. The element of focusing on the two main characters' love and emotion seems symbolic of an ideal state. There are also social problems addressed. This is done in a few different ways. The most noticeable way is that the lower class people remain locked in the basement as the ship goes down. Throughout Titanic, the lighting is very important. The poor, lower class people are always shown in very warm-coloured light that gives them a sense of life and happiness. On the other hand, the rich, upper class are always shown in a flat light portraying the feeling of hardness and coldness. By using these techniques, they show the issue of class segregation(种族隔离), and they create stereotypes. The main characters are able to break free of these stereotypes and be together. This is the solution to the segregation problem. As you can see, Titanic took a lot of thinking and preparation to film in a manner that would create emotion and bring to the surface the issues and story of the great ship.6. The underlined word “blockbuster” in the first paragraph probably means “________”.A. something very successfulB. a highly explosive bombC. something worth a lot of moneyD. a touching story7. In Titanic, the scene of the lower class people remaining locked in the basement as the ship goes down is used to ________.A. criticize non-tolerant and cold-hearted rich peopleB. enlarge the spectacle of the filmC. criticize the reality of the societyD. emphasize the condition of the poor at that time8. Why were different colours of light used in the film Titanic?A. They were used to show the difference between the rich and the poor.B. The director was determined to achieve good visual effect.C. The social status was represented by the color of light in the past.D. The use of light was the main technique the director made use of.9. What can we infer from the passage?A. The segregation problem in the society can be solved by using the light.B. Though love is the main theme of Titanic, it also reflects some social problems.C. Because of the director's talents, the film Titanic achieved great success.D. In the film Titanic there are two characters altogether.10. The writer mainly talks about ________ in this passage.A. the process of shooting TitanicB. the leading actor and actress in TitanicC. the main techniques used in TitanicD. the outline of TitanicⅢ. 字数:111&完成时间:5分钟&难度:★ Friendship is very importance. Though much eco-talk has centered on biofuels from corn and soybeans, the biofuel that looks more likely to replace petroleum comes from a most unlikely source: algae(藻类).Algae, like corn, soybeans, and other crops, grow via photosynthesis(光合作用) and can be processed into fuel oil. However, they yield 30 times more energy than land crops such as soybeans, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Many algae species also can grow in saltwater and polluted water―while corn and soy require arable land and fresh water that will be in short supply as the world's population balloons.“If you replaced all the diesel(柴油) in the U.S. with soy biodiesel, it would take half the land mass of the U.S. to grow those soybeans,”says Matt Caspari, chief executive of Aurora Biofuels, a Berkeley, Calif-based private firm that specializes in algae oil technology. On the other hand, the Energy Department says that if algae fuel replaced all the petroleum fuel in the United States, it would require 15,000 square miles, which is a few thousand miles larger than Maryland (12,407 square miles), the 42nd state in land area.Another bonus: Because algae can be grown just about anywhere in a closed space, they're being tested at several power plants across the nation as a carbon absorber. Smokestack emissions (烟囱排放物) can be pumped directly into the ponds, feeding the algae while keeping greenhouse gases out of the atmosphere.Although processing technology for algae fuel-also known as “oilgae” in some environmentalist circles―is improving, it's still years away from reaching your local gas pump. “It's just a question of cost, because no large-scale facilities have been built yet,” Caspari says.1. By how many inches have we raised sea levels? How many species have we put at risk? How many homes will be flooded, how many people will die of thirst or starvation because of our activities?' These are not comfortable questions, but, by God, they need to be asked.”He added,“At the moment these costs do not appear in anyone's books. They landed in the Kazakh steppes (大草原)& about 420km& (260 miles) wide of their target.“During the descent there was some kind of fire outside the Soyuz capsule because we were going through the atmosphere,” Yi said.“At first I was afraid, but the two other guys looked okay, so I tried to look okay too.”Yi smiled and joked her way through a 10-minute news briefing at Star City, the wooded Soviet era cosmonaut training centre on the edge of Moscow. However, Malenchenko and Whitson looked tired and thin after nearly six months in space. Their answers were short and Whitson needed support to balance when she walked. The 29-year-old Yi has become famous in South Korea since the take-off but she brushed this aside and said she has had little contact with friends or family since returning. “In fact, they are the heroes right now,” Yi said, referring to Malenchenko and Whitson. “I'm just a beginner and a little ashamed to say that I am a hero.” She did, though, relate a more light-hearted incident on the ISS.“I sang Fly Me to the Moon” Yi said about the 1950s pop song. “It's my favorite song from university although at that time I didn't know I would be an astronaut.” The capsule's so-called “ballistic” re-entering made the group members face twice the usual pull from the centre of the earth. The flames Yi described may have been caused by friction (摩擦) heating the capsule as it fell through the atmosphere.Whitson told reporters that Saturday's ballistic landing, was irregular but not an emergency.“The Soyuz has been through its history very reliable and there has obviously been some issue in the last couple of descents which went ballistic, but I'm sure the engineers will determine what the problems are and get them fixed,” she said.In October, a Soyuz capsule carrying Malaysia's first space tourist touched down about 200 km (125 miles) off_course in a similar ballistic landing caused by a technical problem. The Soyuz is the world's longest-serving manned space capsule. An early version of the craft, the Vostok, carried the first person into space in 1961.Whitson, 48, has become the American with the longest amount of time in space with 377 days.1. When Bowen runs with the Olympic torch, she will not only be representing the United States, but also be representing thousands of Chinese orphans (孤儿). You don't show your secret personality when you're awake because you can control your behaviour, but when you're asleep, your sleeping position shows the real you. During the twentieth century there has been a remarkable shortening of the proportion of a woman's life spent in caring for children. A woman marrying at the end of the nineteenth century would probably have been in her middle twenties, and would be likely to have seven or eight children, of whom four or five lived till they were five years old. By the time the youngest was fifteen, the mother would have been in her early fifties and would expect to live a further twenty years, during which customs, opportunity and health made it unusual for her to get paid work. Today women marry younger and have fewer children. Usually a woman's youngest child will be fifteen when she is forty-five and can be expected to live another thirty-five years and is likely to take paid work until retirement at sixty. Even while she has the care of children, her work is lightened by household appliances and convenience foods. This important change in women's life-pattern has only recently begun to have its full effect on women's economic position. Even a few years ago most girls left school at the first opportunity, and most of them took a full-time job. However, when they married, they usually left work at once and never returned to it. Today the school-leaving age is sixteen, many girls stay at school after that age, and though women tend to marry younger, more married women stay at work at least until shortly before their first child is born. Very many more afterwards return to full-or-part-time work. Such changes have led to a new relationship in marriage: with the husband accepting a greater share of the duties and satisfactions of family life, and with both husband and wife sharing more equally in providing the money, and running the home, according to the abilities and interests of each of them.6. Which of the following is the topic of this passage?A. The marriage of women: past and present.B. Women and their jobs.C. The social changes in the lives of women.D. Women's role in family life.7. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the amount of time the women spent taking care of children ________.A. was shorter than in previous centuriesB. was longer than in previous centuriesC. was considered to be surprisingly longD. accounted for a great part of their lives8. One reason why the woman of today may take a job is that she ________.A. is younger when her children are old enough to look after themselvesB. does not like children herselfC. need not worry about food for her childrenD. can retire from family responsibilities when she reaches sixty9. According to the passage, it is now quite usual for women to ________.A. stay at home after leaving schoolB. marry men younger than themselvesC. start working again later in lifeD. marry while still at school10. What can be inferred from the last sentence?A. The husband tends to share greater share of duties of family life.B. It works out to be about 1.6 percent per annual net increase. In terms of numbers this means something like forty to fifty-five million additional people every year. Canada has a population of twenty million-rather less than six month's climb in world population. There are ten million people in Australia. So, it takes the world less than three months to add to itself a population. Let us take our own crowded country-England and Wales: forty-five to fifty million people-just about a year's supply.By this time tomorrow, and every day, there will be added to the earth about 120,000 extra people-just about the population of the city of York. Here I am not talking about birth rate. You cannot speak quickly enough to keep pace with the birth rate. This enormous increase of population will create immense problems. It has always bothered me that I can think of no way to describe it other than “broken”,as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed, as if it lacked a certain wholeness. I've heard other terms used, “limited English,” for example. But they seem just as bad, as if everything is limited, including people's perceptions(认识)of the limited English speaker.I know this for a fact, because when I was growing up, my mother's “limited” English limited my perception of her. And I had plenty of evidence to support me: the fact that people in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.I started writing fiction in 1985.
