Word study
1.使欢乐；逗…笑
His story amused me.
他的故事使我发笑。
We were all amused at his funny behaviour.
他滑稽的举动逗得我们大家发笑。
2.娱乐； 消遣
She amused herself by reading detective stories.
她读侦探小说消遣。
The children amused themselves by playing hide-and-seek games.
孩子们玩捉迷藏游戏取乐。
3.amused , amusing, amusement
I had an amusing experience last year.
去年我有过一次好笑的经历。
experience n.& vt. 经验, 体验, 经历, 阅历
* experiences, experience这个词作为可数名词用时，解释为“经历”，
作为不可数名词用时解释为“经验”
The manager told me about his experiences as a salesman.
经理给我讲述他做推销员时候的经历。
I had an unusual experience yesterday.
昨天我经历了一次不寻常的事情。
He has not enough experience for the position.
对于这种职位，他没有足够的经验。
A man of your experience ought to do well.
象你这样有阅历的人应该发达的。
He experienced all sorts of difficulties and hardships.
他经历过一切艰难困苦。
He is much experienced in teaching.
他有丰富的教学经验。
1.挥动，挥手，卷曲
wave a sword挥剑

wave sb. a greeting 挥手向某人致意

on 作为副词，表示“继续……”，和动词连用
The whole group worked on and on all night.

except 除……外，没
I own nothing except a car.
除了一辆车，我什么也没有。
except for 只是…（美中不足）
His speech is perfect except for pronunciation.
他的演讲很好，只是发音差点。
核心句型：
had + done 谓语（过去完成时态）
表示在过去发生的某个行为前发生的行为，
如：他去世前在那里工作了30年。
He had worked there for 30 years before he died.
句子中某件事情已经发生，另一件事情在这以前发生，
如上面句子中的he died 是过去某个时间发生的事情，
而“他在那里工作”是发生在he died以前的事情，
所以要采用“had worked”这个形式。例如：
They had got everything ready before I came.
我来到之前，他们已经准备好一切。（‘我来’是过去发生的
事情，‘他们准备’发生在‘我来’之前，所以用had got ）
By the end of last week she had written two papers.
到上周为止，她写了两篇论文。（这里的‘last week’可以表
示过去的时间， 写论文发生在这之前，所以用had written）
2.特殊搭配：no sooner ……than ；hardly …… when 的搭配中
no sooner 和 hardly 引导的句子用‘had+done’谓语。
基本意义为：“刚……，就……”。
Hardly had she gone to bed when the doorbell rang.
=No sooner had she gone to bed than the doorbell rang.
她刚睡觉，门铃就响了。

&&&&&&& There was a time when the owners of shops and businesses in Chicago had to pay large sums of money to gangsters in return for 'protection'. If the money was not paid promptly, the gangsters would quickly put a man out of business by destroying his shop. Obtaining 'protection money' is not a modern crime. As long ago as the fourteenth century, an Englishman, Sir John Hawkwood, made the remarkable discovery that people would rather pay large sums of money than have their life work destroyed by gangsters.
&&&&&&& Six hundred years ago, Sir John Hawkwood arrived in Italy with a band of soldiers and settled near Florence. He soon made a name for himself and came to be known to the Italians as Giovanni Acuto. Whenever the Italian city-states were at war with each other, Hawkwood used to hire his soldiers to princes who were willing to pay the high price he demanded. In times of peace, when business was bad, Hawkwood and his men would march into a city-state and, after burning down a few farms, would offer to go away if protection money was paid to them. Hawkwood made large sums of money in this way. In spite of this, the Italians regarded him as a sort of hero. When he died at the age of eighty, the Florentines gave him a state funeral and had a picture painted which was dedicated to the memory of 'the most valiant soldier and most notable leader, Signor Giovanni Haukodue'.

&in return for 目的是为了换取...作为对...的回报e.g. He gave me some books in return for my help.
&there was a time when 曾有一个时期，when引导状语从句修饰 timee.g. There was a time when mini skirt was in fashion.曾有一个时期，迷你裙很流行。
2, If the money was not paid promptly, the gangsters would quickly put a man out of business by destroying his shop.promptly: immediately 立即put a man out of business: 使某人失业
基本词组：put sb. / sth. out of ... 使某人失去......e.g. You are putting me out of patience. 你使我失去了耐心。e.g. You have already put everything out of order. 你把一切弄得乱七八糟。
by destroying his shop 通过......手段e.g. You are putting me out of patience by disturbing me. 你快把我弄得失去耐心了，如果再这样打扰的话。
3, As long ago as the fourteenth century, an Englishman, Sir John Hawkwood, made the remarkable discovery that people would rather pay large sums of money than have their life work destroyed by gangsters.as long ago as 追溯回到同义词组：date back to / date frome.g. I knew Jane as long ago as the year 1980.我1980年就认识简了。
make the remarkable discovery 做出不同寻常的发现; 意思是：John hawkwood’s discovery was quite remarkable.
woulde rather do sth. than do sth.(详见难点)e.g. I would rather play tennis than swim.我喜欢打网球胜过游泳。
life work 毕生的事业e.g. 毕生的积蓄：life savings
have sth. done（1）东西被破坏等不好的事情发生e.g. have sth. stolen\broken\taken 东西被偷\被毁\被拿走（2）请人做某事（不是自己做）e.g.& The Florentines gave him a state funeral and had a picture painted. ...请人画画（文中的句子，注意区别这两个have sth. done的不同意思）e.g. I want to have the tree cut down.&
4, He soon made a name for himself and came to be known to the Italians as Giovanni Acuto.make a name for himself 意思是：become famouse.g. They soon made quite a name for themselves as pop singers.
come to / get to do& 渐渐地（做成某事）come to be known 渐渐的被人所熟知e.g. I come to be known to my students.e.g. I got to know him.&
5, In times of peace, when business was bad, Hawkwood and his men would march into a city-state and, after burning down a few farms, would offer to go away if protection money was paid to them.in times of peace 在和平期间

Special difficulties
表示“宁可，宁愿”的词组和句型
1，would rather do sth than do sth& 宁愿而不e.g. He would rather die than surrender.他宁死不屈。
2, 同义词组有：
(1) would prefer to do sth. than do sth.(2) would prefer doing sth. to doing sth.e.g. He would prefer to die than surrender.e.g. He would prefer dying to surrendering.
3, would rather\would sooner + that宾语从句 (过去式), 这个句子用的是虚拟语气，表达与现实相反的意愿。e.g. I would rather that you were not here. 我宁愿你不在这儿。(暗示你在这儿)e.g. I would rather that I didn't see you. 我宁愿没见到你。（暗示见到你了）&
