Wrestlemania 33 is coming up and for perhaps the first time in a long time, we have next to no clue what to expect. It’s exciting in a way but also kind of frightening when you consider some of the rumours that have been floating around. Brock Lesnar and Goldberg will fight for the WWE Universal Championship while Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens have a grudge match – those are a given at this point. Still, what are a few potential Wrestlemania matches that we don’t want to see? Take a look at seven below but keep in mind – none of this has been confirmed and plans are always subject to change.
John Cena and Nikki Bella vs. The Miz and Maryse
One question: Why? The seeds were planted for this feud at Elimination Chamber and will likely lead to The Miz getting involved, thus leading to John Cena playing faithful boyfriend. But still, why? Why have Cena wasted on such an odd match at Wrestlemania, especially coming off of the Royal Rumble and Elimination Chamber? Now granted, The Miz and Maryse have been doing exceptional character work and would serve as great villains throughout. Plus, if WWE plays off of the whole “John won’t marry Nikki” plot, thus leading to the former finally proposing with their victory, then it could be a cool moment. Regardless, it’s still a fairly underwhelming role for Cena to occupy on the biggest show of the year.
Roman Reigns vs. The Undertaker (for Taker’s retirement)
Will this even be a good match? The Undertaker is banged up due to his most recent hip replacement surgery, which resulted in a limited performance at the Royal Rumble. Roman Reigns could take the reins (all puns intended) and lead the match with sufficient smoke and mirrors but again, unless Taker is doing a lot better, this is a match that will be built on emotion. Then there’s the “retirement stipulation” rumours. Whether that adds the required emotion or not, I can’t help but feel the company is dooming Reigns if he does retire Taker. How does anyone not boo him after this, even if he is legitimized forever? It would have worked if it were the entire Shield but this can’t go well for just Reigns.
Sasha Banks vs. Charlotte vs. Bayley
These women have had great matches over the past few months. Heck, Charlotte and Sasha have several 4 star matches in 2016 alone as per Wrestling Observer. The problem is the title changing hands so often, resulting in the least sexy game of Hot Potato ever (a monumental achievement considering the women involved). The current story is likely leading up to Sasha betraying Bailey at WWE Fastlane, thus making this is a triple threat match for the title. And while the zeal of the women involved is all well and good, we’d love to sink our teeth into a good story. The tale of Sasha turning on Bailey could be effective and result in a great match. Sure, this means Charlotte has to face Nia Jax or something but the title scene desperately needs some fresh blood and less hot-shotting.
AJ Styles vs. Shane McMahon
The storyline kind of makes sense – AJ Styles feels like he’s being shafted by Shane McMahon, both while being champion and after losing the title – but the latter is 47 years old. He’s not really a wrestler either. It just feels like a big waste to have AJ friggin’ Styles who’s had such a phenomenal year (the above video is from a Smackdown match, for crying out loud) facing an old authority figure. Why doesn’t Shane recruit someone to fight for him like, you know, Triple H did with Samoa Joe? Never mind the fact that Triple H can still actually wrestle, there’s no excuse to not bring in some baby face to combat the might of Styles.
Multi-Man Cruiserweight Clusterfrak
It’s great to see Jack Gallagher getting a shot at Neville’s Cruiserweight Championship for Fastlane. It’s great to see Austin Aries involved and probably being the smarmy anti-hero who can finally dethrone Neville. I wouldn’t mind a singles match between any of these three at Wrestlemania. Heck, a triple-threat match ain’t half-bad either. But you just know that a multi-man Cruiserweight scramble is going to happen just for the sake of getting everyone on the card and hitting spots for those sweet highlight reels. That’s just not right considering the talent feuding right now.
Intercontinental Title Ladder Match
These Intercontinental Title Ladder Matches have actually been pretty good over the past few years. However, they’ve led to nothing – last year’s winner Zack Ryder lost the belt within the same week. Daniel Bryan, who won in 2015, was hardly in action and had to retire for good. The garbage aspect and high spots will likely be cool but again, I feel like Smackdown has something better going with Dean Ambrose and Baron Corbin. Who knows – it could even lead to a cool singles Ladder Match.
Smackdown Women’s Tag
Remember those “You deserve it” chants that Naomi got on winning the title? Remember the fairly strong characters that Becky Lynch and Alexa Bliss have cultivated? How about Mickie James being Mickie James, which is awesome? I’d love to see a rematch between Becky and Mickie but whatever spot the Smackdown women have, there has to be a better deal than Alexa Bliss and Mickie James vs. Naomi and Becky Lynch (and yes, you saw that on Smackdown recently). Hopefully that’s not the direction this all eventually goes.
