In this study we assessed the limitations to effective medicine use in the above groups and strategies adopted by them to overcome limitations.
Objectives
• Assess the general health status of the visually impaired and deaf
• Asses requirements for medical care among the visually impaired and deaf
• Identify limitations faced by them at medical consultations and at the pharmacy.
• Identify limitations to effective medicine usage.
• Identify the coping strategies adopted by the study population to overcome limitations.
Methodology - A descriptive cross sectional study was carried out at the specialized school for blind and deaf. 54 visually disabled and 44 deaf students in the 14-19 year age group were studied. Interviewer administered questionnaires were used for data collection.
Results-Prevalence of chronic diseases, predominantly epilepsy was significantly high in the blind population.(p&0.01)and knowledge about the disease was very low. The literacy of the deaf was considerably low. Both the blind and deaf were satisfied about the medical consultations they experienced but both groups had communication difficulties at the pharmacy and had problems during drug administration. Various strategies were adopted by them to overcome these problems.
Conclusions and recommendations-In order to provide better standards of care for the deaf and blind, it is essential to take innovative measures to overcome these limitations. Creating awareness and capacity building of the healthcare professionals and general public is mandatory. Developing a color coded system and pictorial labeling system, assistive technologies for health education are strategies useful for both visually and acoustically impaired.

Post-operative assessment of uterine size and weight has not been satisfactorily correlated to pre-operative assessment results. Pre-operative clinical bimanual assessment of uterine weight in enlarged non gravid uteri has been shown to be far superior to calculated weight using ultrasonic measurements.
Clinical assessment of the patient in view of uterine size and mobility, adnexial pathologies and risk factors have been proven to be useful in significantly reducing the number of abdominal hysterectomies performed.
Therefore development of an objective set of clinical assessment guidelines has been called for and has been long time coming.
