这种用法叫抽象名词具体化.通常不用复数.这里是指"一种独立"的个性（characteristic）.虽然主语是复数,但是独立的个性是每个人只能有一种,不能说有很多独立性,逻辑也不对.所以不能用复数.像这种用法的还有success,failure等
an independence中的an是定冠词 表示一个的意思，所以不能用复数
