poet的基本意思是“诗人”,指写诗或韵文的人,可以指“女诗人”。引申可指“善于感受或表达的人”。
poet多用于表达肯定的语气,而不带有贬义。
Poet Laureate意为“桂冠诗人”,二词开头多大写,因其指英宫廷的终身独有称号。
poet, bard, poetaster, poetess, versifier
这组词的共同意思是“诗人”。其区别是:
1.poet指一般的“诗人”,常用于肯定语气,而无贬义。
2.versifier指“诗人”时含贬义,指那些写轻薄或轻松的诗句或用过时的严格格式写诗的“劣等诗人”,也常译为“打油诗人”。versifier还可指改散文成诗者,这时虽无贬义,但也含有水平不高的意思。例如:
They are just a horde of versifiers who could hardly be considered poets.他们只是一些水平不高的改散文成诗者,根本谈不上诗人。

☆ 14世纪初期入进英语,直接源自古法语的poete;最初源自拉丁语的poeta,意为诗人。
