&&&Middle and high school days are both
fun and busy. Students spend their days in class, listening to the interesting
and sometimes boring words of the teacher. They spend the short breaks running,
playing, and shouting happily before going back to the classroom again. But how
should students spend their free time outside school?
In Western countries, it is common for students to have
a part-time job after school and at weekends. Students can earn their own money
and learn more about the “real world”. They enjoy the extra independence and
money, and parents enjoy the quiet house. However, it seems that, in China,
parents worry so much about their children’ studies that they would prefer to
see their children spending most of their free time studying and preparing for
all those exams.
It is natural for parents to feel that
way, but I believe the answer lies in balance. Sometimes, Western school
children work long hours after school to make money, and so they become too
tired to listen in class or have no time for homework. But Chinese students
spend so much time on their studies that all else becomes less important until
they want that new MP4 player.
So, find a good and healthy balance! If you have a
part-time job, you’ll be happy, and your parents will also be happy because
you’re spending your hard-earned money and not theirs!

“Can I see my baby?” asked the happy new
mother. The bundle(婴儿包)was placed in her arms and when she moved the fold of cloth to look
upon his tiny face, she gasped-the baby has been born without ears. Time,
however, proved that the baby’s hearing was perfect except his appearance.
One day when he rushed home from school and
threw himself into his mother’s arms, he cried out bitterly, “A boy, a big boy…
called me a f-…freak.” She sighed, knowing that his life was to be endless of
heartbreaks.
He grew up, handsome for his misfortune. A
favorite with his fellow students, he might have been class president, but for
that. He developed a gift for literature and music.
The boy’s father had a talk with the family
doctor. Could nothing be done? “I believe we could graft(移植)on a pair of outer ears, if
they could be donated,” the doctor decided. So the search began for a person
who would make such a sacrifice a young man. Two years went by. Then, “You’re
going to the hospital, son. Mother and I have someone who will donate the ears
you need. But it’s a secret,” said the father.
The operation was a brilliant success. His
talents blossomed (开花)into genius. School and college became a series of successes. Later
he married and entered the diplomatic(外交)service. “But I must know!” he urged his father. “Who gave so much
for me? I could never do enough for him.”
“I do not believer you could,” said the
father, “but the agreement was that you are not to know….not yet.” The years
kept the secret, but the day did come…. one of the darkest days that ever pass
through a son. He stood with his father over his mother’s casket(棺材).Slowly and tenderly, the
father stretched forth a hand and raised the thick, reddish-brown hair to let
out the secret.

The other
day at the supermarket, I saw a naughty child of about six crying loudly,
falling to the floor and refusing to move. All the while the troubled mother
was trying to persuade him to behave well but failed. A little smack (掴打) on his bottom would have done the job,
I thought.
Teenagers
also cause discipline problems. As a teacher I had a 16-year-old student who
had fallen in love with a waiter at a fast-food restaurant. In fact, she had
left home to stay with him. So we decided to put her in the school hostel. She
refused. When she heard her mother begging her to stay in the hostel she turned
round and said: “Why don’t you stay in the hostel if you like it so much?”
My palms
were itching to slap her for being so rude but the poor mother continued to
cajole her, hoping that gentle persuasion would work wonders. It did not.
The last I heard, she had run away from home again.
&&&
The list goes on and on. Could it be that today’s parents are softer and
believe that they must not rod (棍棒惩罚) their
children for fear of the bad result? Or do they actually believe that the
children will get rid of the bad habits and behave well naturally as they grow
older? I beg to disagree. I believe it is the parents’ duty to discipline the
children even at a young age.
&&&
My children who are now adults will prove the fact that I used the rod when I
thought it necessary. Later when they went abroad, they related to their
British university friends on how they were disciplined. Their friends abroad
were filled with horror and told my daughter that I could be charged for child
abuse (虐待).
However, my daughter paid me the greatest compliment when she
told them that she would not be where she was today if not for my strict
discipline.

&Of all the things that have effects
on your future, I believe that personal growth is the greatest. Many people
talk about sales growth, profit growth, and possession growth, but none of
these will happen without personal growth. In fact I’d like to have you
memorize a most important sentence. It is “The key to your future is you
yourself.”
There are many things that will help you
better your future. If you belong to a strong, dynamic(充满活力的)and progressive company,
that will help. Good training will help. Strong leadership will help. If the
neighbors stay civil(文明的), that will help. If your relatives don’t trouble you, that will
help…All these things will help. We can go on
but
remember, the things that I’ve covered above just play minor(次要的)roles in helping you reach
a good future. The major cause doesn’t lie outside. It lies inside.
Strangely enough, when two different men
work in the same company, the first person may earn $1,000 a month, while the
second may earn $10,000 a month. What causes the difference when they have the
same job, use the same tools, and get the same training?
The cause of the difference lies in
believing, in trying, in accepting failures, in thinking, in a smile at people
around, and in the ways of dealing with problems. All of these can be major
causes of your good future. You can see all these come from inside. In fact,
the real difference is you yourself. You are the key to your future. Teens are
the most wonderful and important period in life. If you want a great future,

I had the

My mother

After my brother died in an accident , my mother
was inconsolable(痛苦的,极其伤心的). I was only 4 years old at that time, but I
still understood the seismic shift(地震的改变) in my mom’s
attitude towards safety. Suddenly, everything around us was potentially dangerous.
I grew up with a lot of restrictions(限制)that were meant to protect me. I couldn’t walk home from
school by myself even though everyone I knew already did. I couldn’t attend
parties, or go to summer camp, because what if something happened to me. My
life was divided into “things you should avoid” and “things you needed to do in
order to have a good , long life”.
I became a natural worrier. I worried about
things like getting cancert, losing my wallet, car accidents, and
earthquakes-disasters big and small, real and imagined.
When I was 14, my mother died suddenly in a car
accident. That loss, on top of my brother’s unnatural death, could have
paralyzed(瘫痪) me. But at my mom’s funeral, I made a choice.
I could either live out the rest of my life trying to be “safe” or
I could be brave enough to live out a fulfilling, exciting and, yes, sometimes
dangerous life.
I began constantly forcing myself to do the
things that frighten or worry me. In fact, I’ve developed a rule for myself: If
it scares(使….害怕) me, I have to do it at least once. I’ve done
lots of things that my mom would have worried about: I’ve ridden a motorcycle,
I’ve dived, I’ve tried rock-climbing, I’ve traveled a lot.
Courage(勇气,勇敢) isn’t a
natural attribute (性格) of human beings. I believe that we have to
pract using courage is like developing a muscle. The more
often I do things that scare me, the more I realize that I can do a lot more
than I originally thought I could. I’ve also come to believe that fear can be
good thing if we face it.
