除夕活动常常持续到次日凌晨两三点钟。到元旦这一天，通常比较安宁、闲散。许多人很晚才起床，然后同家人、朋友一起看电视、吃顿新年饭。
在加利福尼亚州有玫瑰花会，这是美国规模最大的新年庆典。在费城，有长达10小时之久的化装游行。不少州还举行元旦足球赛。小朋友们和家人尽情享受节日的快乐。
