A little girl had been shopping with her Mom in Wal-Mart. She
must have been 6-year-old. Her beautiful red hair caught my sight.
“What a lovely angel!” I thought to myself. After paying for
all I had chosen, I was going to leave. But I found it was pouring
outside. Many people stood under the awning(凉棚)and just
inside the door of the Wal-Mart.
We waited, some patiently, others irritated(急躁)because
nature messed up their hurried day. I got lost in the sound and
sight of the heavens washing away the dirt and dust of the world.
Suddenly I heard a little sweet voice. It was her --- the
red-haired girl. “Mom, let’s run through the rain,” she
“What?” Mom said.

“This morning? When did I say we could run through the rain
and not get wet?”
“Don’t you remember? When you were talking to Daddy about
his cancer, you said, If God can get us through this, he can get us
through anything!”
The entire crowd stopped dead silent. I couldn’t hear anything
but the rain. No one came or left in the next few minutes.
Mom paused and thought for a moment about what she would say.
“Honey, you are right. Let’s run through the rain. If God let
us get wet, well maybe we just need washing,” Mom said.
Then off they ran. We all stood watching, smiling and laughing
as they darted(疾走) past the cars and, yes, through the
puddles(地上积水). They got wet. But they were followed by a
few who screamed and laughed like children all the way to their

When you learn English, reading is important for you. Here are
some tips to improve your reading.
Try to read at the right level. Read something that you can,
more or less, understand. If you need to stop every three minutes
to look in a dictionary, it will not be interesting for you and you
will soon feel discouraged.
Make a note of new vocabulary. If there are four or five new
words on a page, write them in your vocabulary book. But you
don’t have to write them while you read. Instead, as you read,
try to guess their meanings first. Mark them with a pen and then
come back for them after you have finished reading. Then you can
check in a dictionary before you add them to your vocabulary
Try to read regularly. For example, read for a short time once a
day. Fifteen minutes every day is better than two hours every
Sunday. Fix time to read and stick to it. For example, you could
read for fifteen minutes before you go to bed, or when you get up,
or at lunchtime.
Be organized. Have everything ready:
something to read
a marker to highlight difficult words
a dictionary
your vocabulary book
a pen to write down the new words
Read what interests you. Choose a magazine or a book about a
subject that you like.
71. In Tip 1, “read at the right level” means
__________________________.
&& A. to read neither too fast
nor too slowly
&& B. to read neither too much
nor too little
&& C. to read something that
is neither too hard nor too easy for you.
&& D. to read something that
is suitable for your age
72. When you find a few new words in your reading, what is the
first step you should take?
&& A. Write them down in your
vocabulary book.
&& B. Guess what they
&& C. Mark them with a
&& D. Look them up in a
dictionary.
73. In the five tips, which of the following is not
mentioned?
&& A. Reading
places.&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
B. Reading times.
&& C. Reading

74. According to Tip 4, a marker is used _______________.
&& A. to write something
&& B. to make you see the
difficult words clearly
&& C. to increase your reading
&& D. to improve your reading
75. You may find reading in English is easier than before if you
_____________.

you at anytime
&& C. read at higher level
&& D. get everything
If parents bring up a child with the aim of turning the child
into a genius, they will cause great damage to him. According to
several leading educational psychologists, this is one of the
biggest mistakes which some parents make. Generally, the child will
understand very well what the parents expect, and will fail.
Unrealistic parental expectations can cause great damage to
However, if parents are not unrealistic about what they expect
their children to do, but are hopeful in a proper way, the child
may succeed in doing very well—especially if the parents are very
supportive of their child.
Michael Lee is very lucky. He is very fond of music, and his
parents help him a lot by taking him to concerts and arranging
private piano and violin lessons for him. They even drive him 50
kilometers twice a week for violin lessons. Although Michael’s
mother knows very little about music, Michael’s father plays the
trumpet in a large orchestra. However, he never makes Michael enter
music competition if he is unwilling to.
Michael’s friend, Wilson Chen, however, is not so lucky. Both
his parents are successful musicians, and they set too high a
standard for Wilson. They want their son to be as successful as
they are and so they enter him in every piano competition held.
They are very unhappy when he does not win. “When I was at your
age, I used to win every competition I entered.” Wilson’s
father tells him. Wilson is always afraid that he will disappoint
his parents and now he is always quiet and unhappy.
