Brendan Rodgers will have to prove he is the right man to take Liverpool
forward in an end-of-season review with Fenway Sports Group (FSG).
The club’s American owner will look to re-establish common ground with the
manager after a season that has fallen short of expectations, and that has
ended with Raheem Sterling — heckled by some fans when he accepted
Liverpool’s young player of the year award last night — seeking to leave
Although FSG has no intention of dispensing with Rodgers’s services, the
outcome of the meeting will be pivotal in determining how the club go about
addressing the failings that have resulted in such a disappointing campaign.
The main aim of the summit, at which Mike Gordon, FSG’s most influential
figure at Anfield, will hold face-to-face talks with Rodgers, will be to
learn from the mistakes that caused Liverpool to fail

With its strong traditions and unique eight-foot slope, Lord’s can be as
tricky and intimidating as it might be inspiring for a newcomer. England
appear ready to gamble, with signs that Mark Wood may be handed his Test
debut tomorrow even though he has not played at the ground.

punctuated by rain yesterday. On his previous two visits, with Durham, Wood
has been restricted to twelfth-man duties.
The first Test against New Zealand has assumed great importance. Winning is
the only way to shift the agenda from the fiasco around Kevin Pietersen’s
effective blackballing as an international player and the botched
circumstances around the sacking of Peter Moores as head coach.

The chairman of UK Athletics said that Russia should be banned from the sport
if systemic doping is proved. In a forthright interview, Ed Warner also
accused the IAAF of putting a list of potential cheats in the bin and said
that Justin Gatlin, the world’s fastest man this year, will be excluded from
competing in Britain’s top meetings.
Warner said he does not believe that “there is a desire” to clean up athletics
and is incredulous that nothing has been done since a German television
documentary last December claimed that 99 per cent of Russian athletes
doped. The investigative journalist behind the programme said that he also
had a list of 150 athletes who had suspicious blood samples.
Warner said that Russia should be excluded from the World Championships if the
claims are proved. “In a situation like this, when the allegation is
systemic cheating w
