American culture
The main content of American culture is the emphasize on individuals' value, the pursue of democracy and freedom, the promotion of deploitation(开拓, 经营) and competition and the need of realistic and practicality. Its core is individualism: self first, personal need first, pursue of individual benefit and enjoyment, emphasize on achieving individual value by self-strive and self-design. This type of intentionally build up of personality and pursue customized individualism has its pros and cons, it gives incentives to people and make them exert on their potential and wisdom and as a result accelerate the development of the en on the other hand it is difficult to keep good relationship among people if everyone is egocentric thus make the entire society lack of unity.
American citizens emphasize on achievements and respect heroes. They have great sense in their hearts to praise succeand heroes. Personal achievements are one of those with the highest value in Americans mind. Americans have very strong senses of success. Succeis the pursuit of most Americans, it is their attractive future and the incentives for moving forward. They believe that one's personal value is equivalent to his achievements in his career. Some high achievers in their career such as entrepreneurs, scientists, artists and all kinds of super starts became modern heroes. The proceand result of how they strived have become the frame of reference of social culture value and the real life text book for parents to educate their children.
American society has great movements within itself. These movements are shown in two aspects: movements amongst locations and movements inside the society. The United States are relatively more open and have more freedom. Developed transport and the tradition of adventure and sporty makes a lot of American migrate from countryside to cities, fro and from north to the southern sunny land, from one city to another. Unlike European countries, the social classes in America is not so stable. Further more, with the advocation of public education, movements upwards along the social ladder have become possible. Many people living in the states, no matter whether they are Native American or immigrants from overseas, have the same dream of changing their social claand make their lifetime dream come true through their own efforts. This is what they often called &American dream&.
American beer, with very few exceptions, varies from the mediocre(普通的) to the terrible. There are not many types of beer in the US—&light& and &dark& are two terms commonly used.
It is therefore normal to order beer simply by brand name. In a restaurant, in fact, it is quite all right to order &a beer&, and they will tell youwhat they have.
It is not necessary, either, to specify quantity when ordering beer. If it comes in bottles or cans, you will get a bottle or can, and if it's &on tap&(可以随时取用的) you will get a glass, unless you order a &pitcher&(有嘴和柄的大酒罐 i.e.a jug). The latter is very convenient thing to do, since you can then take the jug and glasses to your table and keep filling up without going back to the bar. (It is harder, however, to know how much you have drunk.)
Some beer comes in bottles with tops that look as if they need an opener, but you can, in fact, screw(拧开) them off by hand—though you have to be very careful not to hurt yourself. It is possible, in some stores and bars,to find a wide selection of beer from all over the world, especially Western Europe and Australia, and it is good fun to experiment with these.
Cocktails and &mixed drinks& are much more popular and rather stronger in the USA than in Europe, and visitors may not be familiar with some of the terminology(术语). &On the rocks&, as you probably know, means with ice, while &straight up& or &up& means neat and without ice.
There are hundreds of different cocktails, and there is no space here to list all the different names.
The Hard Stuff
In America &whiskey& means bourbon(一种烈性威士忌酒,最初为美国肯塔基州Bourbon地区所产) unless otherwise indicated. Bourbon is a rather oily spiritmade from maize(玉米). Rye(黑麦威士忌酒) whiskey is called &rye& and Scotch
whiskey &Scotch&.
In bars wine can often be bought by the glass. Don't be misled by names such as &Chablis& is used to refer to white wine, and &Burgundy& to red—Americans seem never to have heard of white Burgundy.
An American friend has invited you to visit his family. You've never been to an American's home before, and you're not sure what to do. Should you take a gift? How should you dress? What time should you arrive? What should you do when you get there? Glad you asked. When you're the guest, you should just make yourself at home. That's what hospitality is all about: making people feel at home when they're not.
The question of whether or not to bring a gift often makes guests squirm. Giving your host a gift is not just a social nicety in some cultures-it's expected. But in American culture, a guest is not obligated to bring a present. Of course, some people do bring a small token of appreciation to their host. Appropriate gifts for general occasions might be flowers, candy or-if the family has small children-toys. If you choose not to bring a gift, don't worry. No one will even notice.
American hospitality begins at home-especially when it involves food. Most Americans agree that good home cooking beats restaurant food any day. When invited for a meal, you might ask, &Can I bring anything?& Unless it's a potluck, where everyone brings a dish, the host will probably respond, &No, just yourself.& For most informal dinners, you should wear comfortable, casual clothes. Plan to arrive on time, or else call to inform your hosts of the delay. During the dinner conversation, it's customary to compliment the hostess on the wonderful meal. Of course, the biggest compliment is to eat lots of food!
When you've had plenty, you might offer to clear the table or wash the dishes. But since you're the guest, your hosts may not let you. Instead, they may invite everyone to move to the living room for dessert with tea or coffee. After an hour or so of general chit-chat, it's probably time to head for the door. You don't want to wear out your welcome. And above all, don't go snooping around the house. It's more polite to wait for the host to offer you a guided tour. But except for housewarmings, guests often don't get past the living room.
Americans usually like to have advance notice when people come to see them. Only very close friends drop by unannounced. This is especially true if the guests want to stay for a few days. Here's a good rule of thumb for house guests: Short stays are best. As one 19th century French writer put it, &The first day a man is a guest, the second a burden, the third a pest.& Even relatives don't usually stay for several weeks at a time. While you're staying with an American family, try to keep your living area neat and tidy. Your host family will appreciate your consideration. And they may even invite you back!
Most Americans consider themselves hospitable people. Folks in the southern United States, in particular, take pride in entertaining guests. In fact, &southern hospitality& has become legendary. But in all parts of America, people welcome their guests with open arms. So don't be surprised to find the welcome mat out for you. Just don't forget to wipe your feet.
As we know,America is a young country, however, its culture is quite splendid, which is admitted by people all over the world, especially its fastfood culture.
In 1948,the Richards opened up the first fastfood restaurant, named Mcdonald's,beside a highway. In order to attract people passing by,they lifted up the golden&&neon signs, mainly selling out the hamburgers, milkshake, soda water and so on which are packed with paper bags.Due to it's convenient to carry with, those people that on the car can find the solution to eating, therefore,it's very popular with the Americans.Based on the industrial pipeline,a new kind of the fastfood came into being. With its appearance,a new lifestyle started to spread to the whole America, even affected the whole world later on.
In my opinion, the reason why the American fastfood is so popular owes to people's fast rhythm of life, and Americans are always seeking for the high efficiency no matter in their work or life.
