I think that a lot of people (if notmost) will agree that the choice of the Aufklärungspanzer Panther for the tier7 light tank in its supertest incarnation was not a good one. Of course this design has one bigadvantage for Wargaming: pretty much no new modelling work is needed, as thehull and turret models are already there (Panther hull, Leopard and VK2801turret). The costs of creating such a vehicle are kept to a minimum. By theway, a friend told me that he believes at this moment Wargaming is in thecost-cutting phase, eg. making new patches (including vehicles) as cheaply aspossible. Let*s recap 8.4 then - 2x Panzer I, Panzer II (remodelled existingPanzer II), Valentine AT (Valentine hull already existed), Churchill GC (well,Churchill hull model was also already there), the whole AT series with vehicleslooking similiar - less modelling work, then there*s the AT-15 model used for AT-15Aand (modified) for Tortoise. Oh yes, and the second FV215b with a remodelledturret. But this is not what this article isabout. It is about the possible alternatives to the T7 AufklärungspanzerPanther. There are several in fact. We are looking at 1944+ vehicles to keep atleast some historical continuity (T6 VK2801 is a late 1943 project while T7 scoutPanther was concieved in early 1942). This is a conceptproject by Krupp. In November 1944, Krupp sent a batch of projects to theInspector-general of the tank force (Panzertruppen), proposing to re-armexisting tank designs. The basic idea was to use the best weapon available withthe least amount of armor, so weight is saved and the vehicle is maneuverable.Krupp believed that the vehicle should have enough armor to actually protectitself from its own weapon. In January 1945, the Inspector-general passed theproposals to the Waffenprüfamt 6, who in turn threw most of them out, becauseso many new designs were unrealistic to produce. One of the proposalswas to put a Panzer IV turret on the redesigned Panzer 38t hull and re-arm itwith the L/48 75mm KwK 40 cannon (lower picture). It was deemed technicallypossible to mount the turret at the cost of reduction of the hull angle and armor,but the weight would stress the roadwheels immensely. The vehicle (projected toweight 16 tons) would thus have little mobility advantage, compared to theHetzer hull. The history of thisproject is quite interesting. The first &incarnation& of theAufklärungspanzer 38 was built on the 38t chassis and armed with a 20mm Flak 38gun at BMM in Prague in early 1944. This is how it looked:这个项目的历史相当有趣。侦查38型的第一部前身是1944年早期在布拉格BMM工厂建造的38t,在其车体上加装了20mm FlaK38炮。这就是它的外形:

Both projects haddifferent powerplants, giving them around 150hp. But this was only thebeginning. The 38t chassis had one major issue (in Germans* eyes at least). Dueto different techniques used in Czechoslovakia, it was very hard, expensive andimpractical to manufacture the hull in Germany. And so it was that in September1944, the OKH announced they want a new 38t - based tank destroyer and ascouting vehicle (the TD would be produced by Alkett in 1000 pieces per month,the scout vehicle would be produced by Miag in 300 pieces per month). For the aforementionedreasons (and because by the end of the war, Škoda fell behind with 38t chassisproduction - partly due to war damage, partly due to sabotage, partly simplybecause it lacked materials), it was decided to rework the 38t chassis intowhat would become the 38d. The new re-worked chassis was 60mm wider, it hadstronger springs and sturdier construction. The main reason for it was ofcourse the Jagdpanzer 38d, but the scouting development was not neglected. TheAufklärungspanzer variant of 38d chassis was projected to be fitted with a(Czech) 220hp Tatra T103 engine, giving it the speed of 52 km/h. In January1945, on the meeting of the Panzer development commission it was decided thatthe Aufklärungspanzer 38d would be produced in 2 variants: with a turretted20mm (using the Hängelafette mount) and the non-turretted 75mm AKF L/48. Bothversions were to be produced simultaneously using 1:1 ratio. The vehicle wasprojected to weight 14 tons, with the frontal armor being cca 30mm thick(sloped at 50 degrees), the sides were cca 20mm thick. The 75mm gun was are-worked PaK 40 with different mount and construction - it was lighter,allowing for better handling and aiming and it could be traversed 20 degrees toeach side. Originally, thisvehicle was scheduled for production from January 1945, but bureaucratic delayskilled it. By March 1945 the production order was still not given and by then,it was all over. In late March 1945, an order was given to redirect all the 250scheduled 38d chassis for emeregency Jagdpanzer 38d production. In World of Tanks,this vehicle could server as a sort of slower T7 AMX ELC. It*s rather lowsilhouette could provide excellent camo bonus to compensate for its relativelylower speed and thin armor. The weaponry choice is potentially also very wide:there*s the 20mm (obviously for stock version), then there*s the 38t*s 75mmL/24, the main option would be the 75mm AKF, and... to save the best for last:one Bergepanzer 38t (a lot similiar to the Aufklärungspanzer 38t chassis) wasconverted in December 1944 by BMM Prague to carry a 150mm s.I.G.33/2 howitzer.That could be give it a great derp option. This is obviously a post-war prototypedesign, based on the Schützenpanzer Kurz (Hotchkiss), which was built from 1959to 1967 by Magirus-Deutz in Mainz. It was concieved in 1956 during the slowbuilding of the new German army - the Bundeswehr. The intent was to follow thefootsteps of the popular and successful wartime
armored car - a verylightly armored vehicle with a massive weapon for its size. The addedweight of the gun and turret required some changes to the hull, engine anddrivetrain. The rifled90mm Mercar gun had only a short recoil, allowing it to be mounted in such asmall turret. The vehicle weighted 6,5 tons, the armor was 8-15mm thick and itwas powered by a 200hp Hotchkiss-Brandt engine (giving it a whopping 30hp/t),the maximum speed was projected at 58 km/h. The gun was the mentioned 90mmMercar, firing impressive HEAT rounds. SerB answered that this tank could be tier 6/7 Soviet lighttank (not that it will, it would just be on that tier). The light tankproposal from I.V.Gavalov (an engineer of some renown, he worked on severallight tank designs, including the T-70) is an attempt to combine the concept ofa light tank with a powerful gun. In this project,the crew compartment was situated in the turret,w while the engine wasapparently in the back in lying position. As mentionedearlier, the driver’s seat was “stabilized” – when the turret turned, thedriver stayed looking forward – this was possible thanks to a special chaintransmission and the fact that the whole turret was “sitting” on the bottom ofthe tank on a pivot, not unlike the one of the anti-aircraft lafettes.Effectively, the driver was sitting on the turret axis and the whole thingrotated around him. As for thearmament,in player-suggested trees, this tank is equipped with either a 57mmZiS-5, or 76,2mm ZiS-4 and S-54 and characterised as a small, fast vehicle.Historically, it was to be equipped with a long-barelled 76mm gun and amachinegun. The vehicle was supposed to be 1,3m tall, 4m long and was supposedto have 7 large roadwheels. By looking carefully, it can be seen. Ifthis single tray loader was removed, it seems like the cannon can be mountedinto the Chi Ri plan 2 big turret. That would give the Chi Ri Kai a big alphaand a high pen but with a slow reload. The 105 would be the top gun and the75mm belt fed would be stock with the 88 available in the modules. This 105would also be used, likely as the top gun, for the Tier 8 Ho Ri TD, but withthe single tray reload attached. The hull would bebased on the Ho Ri sloped TD.车体将会基于Ho Ri倾斜装甲坦克歼击车Technically speaking,this sloped hull was based off the Chi Ri hull anyway. It*s just a matter oftaking this design and giving it back to the Chi Ri for the Chi Ri Kai. If youlook closely, the picture identifies where the transmission, engine,ammunition, and the fuel tank would be located. Just like how these componentswere switched around in the Ho Ri 2 (e.g. the engine is in the rear in the HoRi 2), these components can be switched around to fit the large Chi Ri turretin the middle. As of now, I don*t know what the armor would be of the frontslope.
