Precipitating antibodies to milk were found in the serum from 87 of 1,618 infants and children. Precipitins to bovine serum albumin and gamma globulin were found more often than precipitins to other milk proteins. The incidence of recurrent respiratory tract disease, anemia, failure to thrive, and hepatosplenomegaly was increased in these 87 children as compared to 87 hospital control patients. All but 2 of 24 patients with precipitins who were placed on diets free of pasteurized milk and observed for a minimum period of 4 months showed an impressive improvement. It is suggested that infants with the appropriate clinical picture should be tested for precipitins to milk, and those with antibodies should be given a trial with processed milk or a milk substitute.
