ZnOellipsoidalnanostructureswithuniformellipsoidalmorphologieshavebeensynthesizedusingdifferenthydroxideanionprecursorsbyanultra-fast,facile(90°C)solution-phasemethodwithouttheassistanceofsonicationoranysurfactants.TheproductswerecharacterizedbyX-raydiffraction(XRD),scanningelectronmicroscopy(SEM),andphotoluminescence(PL)measurements.Basedontheexperimentalresults,agrowthmechanismofZnOnanostructureswasproposed.TheobtainedZnOnanostructuresexhibitaweakUVemissionbandat~385nmandarelativelystrongerorangeemissionbandat~615nm.Thesolution-phasemethodissimple,convenientforlarge-scalefabricationofZnOellipsoidalnanostructures.

1.Introduction
Zincoxideisanimportantn-typesemiconductorwithawideanddirectbandgapof3.37eVandalargeexcitonbindingenergyof60meVatroomtemperature,whichmakesitapromisingcandidateforsurfaceacousticwave(SAW)?lters,nanoscalelasers,light-emittingdiodes(LEDs)andotherfunctionalnanodevices[1,2].Consequently,ZnOnanostructureswithvariousmorphologieshavebeenprepared,suchasnanowire[2],nanobelt[3],ellipsoidal[4C6],?ower-like[7],tower-like[8],tube-like[9],doughnut-like[10],?ake-like[11],andnet-like[12].
Amongthem,theZnOellipsoidalnanostructuresareofgreatscienti?candtechnologicalinterest.AlthoughsomegroupshavesynthesizedZnOellipsoidalnanostructuresbyusingdifferentmeth-ods[4C6],thesemethodspossesssomedisadvantages,suchaslongreactiontime,usingorganicadditivesorsonicationprocessing.Herein,wereportanultra-fast,simple,facile(90°C)solution-phasefabricationofZnOnanostructureswithellipsoidalmorphologywithouttheassistanceofsonicationoranysurfactants.TheeffectofhydroxideanionprecursorsonthesizesandmorphologiesofZnOnanostructureswasstudies.Thepossiblegrowthmechanismofthesenanostructureswasproposed.2.Experimentalprocedures
Allofthechemicalreagentswereofanalytic-gradeandusedwithoutfurtherpuri?cation(purchasedfromShanghaiChemical
ReagentCo.,Ltd.,Shanghai,China).Zincnitratehexahydrate(Zn(NO3)2?6H2O)wasusedaszincsource,andammoniasolution(NH3?H2O,25wt.%),ethylenediamine(EDA,NH2CH2CH2NH2),triethanolamine(TEA,N(C2H4OH)3),hexamethylenetetramine(HMT,(CH2)6N4,99%)wereusedashydroxideanionprecursors.Inatypicalexperiment,0.05MZn(NO3)2solutionwasprepared?rstbydissolvingappropriateamountofZn(NO3)2?6H2Ointo60mlde-ionizedwater.Thenthesolutionwastreatedinawaterbathof90°Cfor5min.Hydroxideanionprecursorwasaddedintotheabove

Fig.1showstheXRDpatternsofobtainedZnOnanostructures.Allpatternspossessthehexagonalwurtzitestructure(JCPDScardnumber36-1451).Ascomparedwiththeintensityof(002)peakinthestandarddiffractionpattern,(002)peakspossessslightlyhigherintensities,indicatingthatthestructureofZnOnanostructureshasapreferentialorientationalongthecaxis.
Fig.2showsSEMimagesoftheas-preparedZnOnanostructuressynthesizedusingdifferenthydroxideanionprecursors.AllsamplesexhibitellipsoidalmorphologiesinthecaseofNH3?H2O,EDAandTEA,exceptthecolumnmorphologyinthecaseofHMT.Inaddition,allnanostructureshaveajointboundaryperpendiculartothemajoraxis,whichdividestheellipsoidalparticlesintotwosemi-parts.FurthercarefulexaminationofFig.2revealsthatnanostructureshavearoughsurfaceonwhichZnOnanoparticlesandnanorodscouldbefound,whichindicatesthatas-receivedZnOnanostructuresareassembledbynanoparticlesandnanorods.Moreover,nanorodshaveaprefer-entialorientationparalleltothemajoraxis,whichisconsistentwiththeXRDresult.Fig.3showsthemajordiameters,minordiametersandratioofmajortominordiameterofZnOnanostructuressynthesizedusingdifferenthydroxideanionprecursors.Theaveragemajorandminordiametersarearound1.0umand0.5um,respectively,exceptthelargerdiametersinthecaseofTEA.Theratiosofmajortominordiametersarearound1.4,andinthecaseofEDAtheratioishighestof2.3,asshowninFig.2(c,d).

released.TheZn2+reactwiththereleasedOH?,andtheZnOnucleiwillbeobtained,whichcanbedescribedasfollows[13]:Zn
tOH?→ZneOHT2?
Secondly,ZnOnucleigrowpreferentiallyalongthe[0001]directiontoformnanorodsintheinitialgrowthstageofZnOcrystals[14].Meanwhile,thenanorodsassemblythroughtheorientedattachmentalongthec-axis[0001]andthenfusing,formingtheframeworksoftheZnOnanostructures[15,16].Moreover,theseprotuberancesandridgesontheroughsurfaceandthere-entrantcornersintheframeworksarefavorableforthefurthernucleation,growthandattachmentofsmallercrystals[17].Consequently,thevoidsbetweennanorodswere?lledbynanoparticles.Finally,thedenseellipsoidalZnOnanostructureswereformed.
Theroom-temperaturePLspectrarecordedfromthedriedsamples(Fig.5)showsthatallofthesespectradisplayaweakultraviolet(UV)emissionbandat~385nmandarelativestrongervisibleemissionbandat~615nm.UVemissionpeakcorrespondstothenearbandedgeemission[18].Theoriginoforangeemissionseemstoinvolvetheinterstitialoxygenions(O?i)[19,20].4.Conclusions
Insummary,ZnOellipsoidalnanostructureswithuniformellip-soidalmorphologieshavebeensuccessfullysynthesizedbyanultra-fast,simple,facile(90°C)solution-phasemethodwithouttheassistanceofsonicationoranysurfactants.Morphologiesofnanos-tructuresallexhibitellipsoidalpatterns,exceptthecolumnmorphol-ogyinthecaseofHMT.Hydroxideanionprecursorisakeyfactorthataffectsthesizeofnanostructures.Basedontheresultsoftheexperiments,amechanismfortheformationofZnOnanostructureswasproposed.TheseobtainedZnOnanostructuresexhibitaweakUVemissionbandat~385nmandarelativelystrongerorangeemissionbandat~615nm.Acknowledgements
