Tributes poured in last night after Kate Barry — the daughter of singer Jane Birkin and James Bond composer John Barry — plunged 80ft to her death in Paris.The 46-year-old, a celebrated photographer, is feared to have committed suicide by leaping from her chic fourth-floor apartment.She landed in the courtyard of the building in the upmarket 16th arrondissement of the French capital.

Police who forced their way into her locked flat found packets of anti-depressants and said Miss Barry — who had a history of drug and alcohol abuse — had been alone.France’s culture minister hailed Miss Barry as ‘an outstanding photographer’ and offered the condolences of the nation.Miss Barry’s 66-year-old mother was said to have collapsed with grief on being told the news. Only a few weeks ago, Sixties siren Miss Birkin had declared that ‘all is well with Kate’.

Miss Birkin — dubbed ‘the original rock chick’ whose affair with French heartthrob Serge Gainsbourg symbolised the Sixties — told an acquaintance in September: ‘My eldest daughter Kate is starting a photographic exhibition in Paris. 'I’m happy for her. She is recognised as being one of France’s greatest photographers. So everything is well with Kate.’ She fell from the apartment — shared with three dogs, three cats and a parrot — at 6.30pm on Wednesday. Police were yesterday interviewing startled neighbours on wealthy Rue Claude Chahu.A source close to the investigation said: ‘The initial theory is suicide’, adding there was no sign of a break-in at the flat.A police spokesman said: ‘The matter is under investigation.’ It was reported locally that Miss Barry had recently split from a cinema producer boyfriend, although police were unable to confirm this.The tragic death is bound to raise uneasy questions about Kate’s childhood, and the lifestyle into which she was introduced by her mother.Kate, whose father John Barry had four children with three wives, was taken to Paris as a baby after Jane Birkin went there to make a film.The story of how Birkin fell in love there with the louche French actor-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg, and found herself and her baby daughter immersed in a subversive, bohemian set on Paris’s Left Bank, is a well-worn trail.What isn’t known, but could now emerge at the inquest into her death, is just what influences there were on Kate as she grew up that drove her to take drugs by the age of 16, and end up in London a year later undergoing treatment for both drug and alcohol addiction.

Astonishingly, Kate was brought up in Paris believing that her father was dead. Earlier this year, recalling her upbringing in the notoriously sybaritic Gainsbourg home on the Left Bank, she said: ‘We had a cleaning lady who told her daughter that my dad was dead, and her daughter repeated it to me. It didn’t make me sad because I already had a dad.’ The ‘dad’ to whom she was referring
was, of course, Gainsbourg, who was to be with Birkin until 1980. Only
when the famous couple’s split became public did Barry — who by then had
two further children with a third wife — contact her. She was 13.

Kate agreed to see him. Intriguingly, she said that Gainsbourg, who had not married Jane Birkin, ‘saw this as a betrayal’.Kate was aged two when her mother became world famous for the song Je t’aime... Moi Non Plus, which she made with Gainsbourg and which, with its heavy breaths and orgasmic gasps, could easily have been mistaken for the soundtrack of a blue movie.Gainsbourg had written it and originally cut the record with his previous lover, Brigitte Bardot, but the French siren was now married to German Opal car billionaire Gunter Sachs and, to avoid embarrassing him, Gainsbourg remade it with his new lover Jane Birkin.Banned by the BBC and condemned by the Vatican, it sold round the world in millions and became the signature track by which her mother was always, and is still, known.‘As a teenager Kate could never escape from it,’ one of her Paris girl friends said yesterday. ‘It was something she had to live with. 'Yes, it became a joke but it’s not that easy to joke about when it’s your own mother, even if it’s just a song.’So Kate’s start in life was troubled, and made no easier by the fact that she was being brought up by two lovers who promoted their careers through their decadent lifestyle. ‘Kate became part of the Serge-Jane road show, even appearing in sexy pictures with them,’ says her friend. ‘It was inevitable that she would eventually get involved with a bunch of rackety young hedonists of her own, and that’s how she ended up in rehab as a teenager.’ Personable and intelligent, Kate remained in touch with rehab groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous after her first treatments, and, some ten years later, set up a centre for drug addicts in Paris. But she was herself always in recovery, and lately is understood to have been suffering from severe depression.

It must be said that Kate’s relationship with her mother as well as with her two subsequent siblings, each by different fathers, was always intimate and warm. They lived just a few miles apart in Paris and talked several times a week on the telephone. For her part, Kate seldom attended the glitzy showbusiness parties and first nights loved by her mother and her actress sisters.

As a child she had been upset being photographed as the trophy Birkin-Gainsbourg daughter — ‘it made me feel like crying,’ she said years later.Jane Birkin was a loving mother, and she encouraged her eldest daughter to study fashion in Paris. But Kate was never comfortable in the fashion world, and at 28 took to photography.The French long ago took Jane Birkin to their hearts, never seeking to question the decadent lifestyle with which she became synonymous and which has now, of course, moved into the past as she approaches her 67th birthday tomorrow.How comforting it must be for her to know that so many in France were yesterday in mourning for her daughter, whose own son Roman, born when she was 20, is now 26. No other foreigner living in Paris could possibly have evoked such an outpouring of affection. Jane Birkin is such a national treasure in France that several years ago the French government wanted to make her a member of the Legion d’Honneur.She turned it down because, she said, her late father David Birkin, a World War II Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Navy, had received a similar honour from the French for bravery (it was presented by Francois Mitterrand), and ‘it didn’t feel right for me to take the same honour.’ However, in the New Year honours of 2002, Jane Birkin was awarded the OBE for ‘services to Anglo-French relations’. Kate, very proud, watched her mother receive it at Buckingham Palace from Prince Charles.How far removed from that palace ceremony was the scene in Kate’s 4th floor flat after her broken body was found at the foot of her apartment block, having fallen 80ft.

Kate lived in the shadow of the fame of other family members — not just her mother and late father John Barry, who won five Oscars and wrote 11 of the James Bond soundtracks, including the 007 theme tune and the music for Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever. Her half-sisters, actresses Charlotte Gainsbourg, 42, and Lou Doillon, 31 — the result of another liaison by her mother — both have successful careers and large fan-bases in France.Perhaps it is not surprising that many of her photographs suggest a longing for somewhere peaceful and away-from-it-all — deserted winter beaches, moorland, hills, and the rocky Brittany coastline.She loved quiet French beaches. She never left one without collecting rocks and shells. But, like her mother, she remained British — ‘it made me different from my sisters,’ she said. The best thing about living in Paris? ‘The rain,’ she said. It rained in the French capital yesterday.
