Your baby is cute, but no, he doesn’t look like you

Shares 1Before my son, if I were in a situation that I found “unsavory” — I would leave, tell somebody off, or give certain hand gestures. Since his arrival, I feel I should exhibit some level of maturity and patience for the betterment of Ben and (probably) the people around me.
Allow me to retell an exchange I had with a friend of our extended family during the holidays…
Almost stranger: Oh my, your son is adorable.
Me: Thank you.
Almost stranger: You know, he doesn’t look anything like you. That is all your wife.
Me: [Scowls]
Almost stranger: (To my back) How does it feel to be a part of “this?” (I put this in quote because I am not exactly sure what she meant, but I assume the creation of my child).
Me: I have learned to embrace patience (continuing my walk out of the room).
That was not the first time somebody said that I look nothing like my child, but it was certainly the rudest delivery of the message (those words were loaded). My son DOES look a lot like my wife. But he also resembles me…especially when I was a baby (and had light hair, lighter eyes, and didn’t have caterpillars eyebrows).
I’m getting sidetracked. The point is: No man wants to be told that his child does not look like him. You are messing with some “Is this kid mine?” primal lizard-brain programming. You’re suggesting that the postman might actually be the dad and that’s freaking rude.
I don’t know why there is a social boundary here, because close friends have straight-up said to me, “It is a good thing that kid does not look like you” and I laugh. But I don’t want to hear this from somebody I don’t know.
Seriously lady, keep it to yourself (I suspect this is going to become a recurring theme with my writing here at BabyCenter). Sometimes people should keep their opinions to themselves!
