area指得是区域或范围，要注意有些行为不可作为一个区域或领域来说。
area的基本意思是“面积”,此时是不可数名词,指物体表面的范围或量度或某一量度的表面。泛指“地区”时,没有固定界限,可大可小。当用作“区域”解时,可指财政、经济、科学等领域。用于比喻则可指意见、个人生活、处理人际关系等方面。
area用于复数形式时,可表示不同的地区,也可表示不同的领域等。

这三个词的共同意思是“地区”。其区别是：
area指较大的地区时侧重其“面积”,不指行政上的地理单位; region所表示的“地区”,指有地理界限或具有某种特色,自成一个单位的地区,一般是较大的行政单位,如我国的自治区(autonomous region); district所指的“地区”范围比region小,如“城区和郊区”一般译为“urban and rural districts”,此时不能用region,一个城市所划分的不同地区,也叫做district,不能用region或area。例如：

:section指城市、国家或天然界线形成的地区。
:zone科技用词，指圆形或弧形地带，尤指地图上按温度划分的五个地带。用作一般意义时，也可指具有某种特征的其它地区。
:belt从本义“带，带状物”引申而指任何广阔的长条地带，也可指种植某种作物的地区。
:quarter指城市里具有相同性质或独特风味的地区，比section范围小，但划分更精确。
:neighbourhood指比section的划定更清楚，范围更小。具体指城市中的住宅区，也可指附近一带。
