Let me start by acknowledging that there are many great DJs who are an absolute blessing to their profession and the people they serve and I by no means wish to overlook this. But from what I am seeing out here in my day-to-day experience, I feel strongly that it is more important now than ever to do a little homework before hiring just anybody to set the mood for your special occasion and interact with your treasured guests. You really want to make sure they have a sincere heart for serving others.
I spend a fair amount of time, as any professional serious about their craft does, educating myself about techniques, equipment and trends in my industry. As such, in many online forums I notice an attitude amongst many in my profession that seem to indicate that they believe it is all about them.
This shouldn’t be surprising seeing how the DJ is a natural point-of-focus at many events. For a person who doesn’t have their heart in serving others, this environment can often feed less-desirable personality traits. Add to this the easy-access to alcohol at most celebrations and you can quickly see how a setting that adds fuel to an un-disciplined provider can become a raging problem for YOU while trying to enjoy a special time you have invested a lot of time and money in the planning for.
There was a graphic going around on facebook a few weeks ago laying out many questions a person may have for a DJ and the answer to almost all of them was literally “Go away and let the DJ do their job” and the comments left on this by other DJs were largely ones of cheering with a rare exception or two. Let me make this clear: If a person’s desire is to place a wall between themselves and those they serve, they have no business being in a service-oriented profession, which is exactly what being a DJ is.
I also recall a comedic graphic of a DJ literally putting up a “talk to the hand” against a lady approaching him with a CD (see the graphic at the top of this article), asking him to play “Call Me Maybe.” All in good fun, but the comments left by the DJs on the thread (it was posted in a forum specific to DJs) were once again, mostly applauding this with many stating they would simply never play this song because they simply don’t like it. Funny I admit, but it does give you some insights into the way many DJs actually think and feel. They would prefer to play their own personal favorite music rather than what will entertain you and your guests (not saying that everybody loves Call Me Maybe, but you get my point). I can tell you that in my experience, playing what pleases the client (as long as it is appropriate of course) gives me much more pleasure than simply playing my own personal tastes. I can listen to what I like on the drive home.
THE DRINKING DJ :
I’ll give one final example: There was a posting last year from an entertainment company asking their DJs publicly what their favorite cocktail was to enjoy while they are working. Overwhelmingly, the DJ responses clearly indicated that the vast majority of them (at least on that forum) do indeed consume alcohol while on the job with the exception of a vocal few who like myself, found it highly irresponsible when considering that a large portion of the job has to do with safety (heavy equipment, set up on rigging, vehicle operation, loading in and out of the venue, routing of cables so they are not tripping hazards, etc). If a speaker falls on a guest because a drunk DJ didn’t set it up safely, your guest is injured (or if it falls on a child, it could be much, much worse – potentially deadly). If the DJ damages the venue during their load-out at the end of the night (runs into walls while trying to cart their equipment out), well there goes your security deposit. Not to mention that after they have combined alcohol with fatigue, they are now getting on the road with a fully-loaded vehicle, usually on a weekend night when capable defensive driving is at its most important for obvious reasons.
A DJ drinking on the job when they are there to serve you and your guests should absolutely be a concern. YOU are there to party. They are there to serve you and help you party. There is a very big difference between the two. Don’t be afraid to ask a DJ during your interview of them what their favorite cocktail is (word it as if you will be providing it to them as a courtesy). If their answer is anything other than “I don’t drink on the job” I would encourage continuing your search elsewhere.
Also, don’t be afraid to ask if they take requests, if they will make special announcements, if they will be approachable by the guests. Some DJs will tell you flat out that they don’t make announcements or take requests. Also take note of when you speak and otherwise communicate with the DJ, is their focus on how they can best serve you, or is it all “I need this and I need that.” Trust your gut.
Also don’t forget the old stand-bys like reading their online reviews, making sure they are insured, finding out what professional organizations they belong to. How will they dress (I know a DJ who literally wears a tuxedo T SHIRT when he serves weddings), Is this their full-time profession or are they a weekend hobbyist? (there is nothing wrong with being a weekend hobbyist, but it does mean that they do not focus on this aspect of their lives to the same level that a full-time professional does. It also means that the event may not mean as much to them if they mess it up because it is not how they put food on the table. My business would be ruined if I were getting bad reviews. A hobbyist will survive, so often they simply don’t care as much.)
If serving others is in a person’s heart, it shows in how they speak and how they act. If you don’t perceive a true heart for serving from the DJ you are communicating with, my opinion is that you should continue seeking the right provider who does understand and care that this is a special occasion for you and your guests, and that takes their serving seriously.

Besides his wife, his daughter also went to see him. Nobody went to see him except [but] his wife. ”,与but, except 同义。如:No one passed the exam besides [except] Jim. All are here but one. All are here except one. (2) 在现代英语中,but 的介词用法十分有限,一般说来,它只能用在下列词语之后:① no, no one, nobody, nothing, nowhere 等② any, anyone, anybody, anything, anywhere 等③ every, everyone, everybody, everything, everywhere 等④ all, none 等⑤ who, what, where 等Everyone knows it but you. I haven’t told anybody but you. No one but he [him] showed much interest in it. The window is never opened except in summer. The window is never opened but in summer.(3) but Everyone is tired but (except) me.正:Everyone but (except) me is tired.误:But (Except) me, everyone is tired. Except for me, everyone is tired.3. All compositions are well written except yours. His composition is good except for a few spelling mistakes. 4. 关于 except for 与 but for:except for 主要表示排除,but for 主要表示一种虚拟条件(与虚拟语气连用)。如:Except for me, everyone passed the exam. But for my help, she would not have passed the exam. But for the atmosphere plants would die. I don’ besides, I’m too tired. This car belongs to Smith, and he has two others besides.
