HOW TO KEEP YOUR PHONE NUMBER WHILE TRAVELING ABROAD – Entripreneurs
HOW TO KEEP YOUR PHONE NUMBER WHILE TRAVELING ABROAD
One of my main concerns before starting out on a year of travel was to figure out how I would communicate with the states.
Unlike a 2 week vaca where you can ditch your phone and wait till you get home , having a phone to call the US was a priority not only to call friends and family but to communicate with clients as part of starting my own freelance business.
Also, I LOVE my phone number and as weird as it sounds, I even get compliments on it!
I have had the same phone number since freshman year of college .
That being said, I had to figure out how to 1. Keep my phone number and 2. Be able to call the US without having to worry about a ridiculous phone bill. After some online research, advice from friends and weighing my options, I decided to use a combination of Google Voice and Skype which would allow me to do both!
NOTE: With this setup you can ONLY send & receive calls and texts on your computer or cell phone (via the Skype and Google Voice app) when you are CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET!
Let’s start with
– if you’re not famailiar (I wasn’t) here’s a short video to explain – What is Google Voice:
1. PORT YOUR PHONE NUMBER TO GOOGLE VOICE ($20)
Number porting takes about 3 days during which time your phone number will be ported into Google Voice and your contract with your current phone company will be terminated (you don’t have to call or cancel with your service provider as Google Voice will do it for you).
This will cost you $20.
Google Voice is NOT a service provider – it’s basically just a routing system that works WITH your service provider… Since I already ruled out signing a contract with a US based provider and didnt want the hassle of a contract with a provider abroad – I turned to Skype.
2. BUY A SKYPE PHONE NUMBER ($60)
You can buy a
from any state/county/city you dream of… I chose New York, however, for my purposes it didn’t matter since I planned on keeping my original phone number.
3. ADD SKYPE NUMBER TO GOOGLE VOICE
This is very simple, simply go into your Google Voice account settings and add your new Skype phone number!
4. SIGN UP FOR SKYPE PREMIUM ($60-$30)
account will allow you to make unlimited calls to the country of your choice for free (rather, the cost of your annual fee).
Obviously, I chose the US.
As far as the cost, I paid $30 because Skype w Buy a Skype phone number and get Skype premium for 50% off (perfect!).
Skype is always running special offers so check them out before you pay full price for anything: /en/special-offers/
5.) SET THE CALLER ID
The last remaining piece to the puzzle is .
You want to change it to read your original phone number so that when you call people, you’ll show up as YOU and not as your unknown Skype number.
This is also very easy, however, the verification process is via text message which can take a couple of extra days to kick in.
Up to this step you can use your Skype phone number to call anyone in the US and have Google Voice track your calls and transcribe your voicemails, however, you may have to wait a day or two for the caller ID to be activated.
Once you see that you’re able to send and receive text messages, log back into Skype and the caller ID dashboard and follow the text verification to set it up.
6.) CALL & TEXT
Once you have all the above set up you can use your computer or smart phone to call and text, however, there are a few tricks.
When using your computer, you can call from either Skype or Google Voice and talk via your computer mic.
To text, go through the Google Voice dashboard or gmail (if you set up email updates, you’ll get notifications when someone calls or texts you and can reply to texts directly through gmail).
When using your smartphone, download both the Skype and Google Voice App.
Use the Skype App to call and the Google Voice app to text – easy as pie!
OK YOU’RE DONE! But remember with this setup you can ONLY send & receive calls and texts on your computer or cell phone (via the Skype and Google Voice app) when you are CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET! For local calls when traveling, you’ll need a GSM phone and calling credits.

Love, success,
happiness, family and freedom----how important are these values to you? Here is
one interview which explores the fundamental questions in life.
Question: Could you introduce yourself first?
Answer: My name is Misbah, 27 years old. I was born in a war-torn area. Right
now I’m a web designer.
Q: What are your great memories?
A: My parents used to take us to hunt birds, climb trees, and play in
the fields. For me it was like a holiday because we were going to have fun all
day long. Those are my great memories.
Q: Does your childhood mean a lot to you?
A: Yes. As life was very hard, I used to work to help bring money in
for the family. I spent my childhood working, with responsibilities beyond my
age. However, it taught me to deal with problems all alone. I learnt to be
independent.
Q: What changes would you like to make in your life?
A: If I could change something in my life, I’d change it so that my
childhood could have taken place in another area. I would have loved to live
with my family in freedom. Who cares whether we have much money, or whether we
have a beautiful house? It doesn’t matter as long as I can live with my family
and we are safe.
Q: How do your get along with your parents?
A: My parents supported me until I came of age. I want to give back
what I’ve got. That’s our way. But I am working in another city. My only
contact with my parents now is through the phone, but I hate using it. It
filters(过滤) out
your emotion and leaves your voice only. My deepest feelings should be passed
through sight, hearing and touch.

&& Arguing with your parents is
totally natural for teens. From your hairstyle to your friends, to your marks
at school, to your television habits, to your future plans, it might just seem
like you argue with your parents about everything. While this is not generally
a pleasant state of affairs, it is normal and it will most likely pass.
Argue fairly
Arguments between teens and parents
generally come about when both parties believe that they know what is best for
the teen. Parents have been caring for their teens for over a decade, but teens
are quickly becoming adults and believe that they are able to take care of
themselves. If you must agree with them, argue fairly by: Allowing each person
to speak their mind. Refusing to interrupt others when they are speaking.
Sticking only to the topic at hand.
Argue respectfully
No matter how heated things may get during
an argument, try to remember that your parents still are worthy of your
attention, respect and love. During arguments, be respectful by: Keeping your
voice lowered at all times and refusing to shout. Sitting still and staying
calm. Refusing to engage in angry actions such as kicking, throwing or hitting
anything. Reasonably explaining the reasons for your opinions.
There is a thin line between having a
discussion and engaging in an argument, but smart teens know that keeping their
interactions with their parents at the discussion level practically guarantees
that they will be taken more seriously. No one likes to argue, and the parents
of teens can be especially weary of it, so keeping things at the discussion
level will work to everyone's advantage.
Arguing with parents is practically a sign
of the teenaged years, but out-of-control arguments don't serve anyone well.
Before arguing with your parents, decide what type of teen you want to be and
what compromises (??Э)you are willing to make in order to achieve your goals. You never
know, you might just avoid an argument all together.
