If you listen to American English, you probably have heard this phrase: "Play it by ear."
What does it mean? let's find out by listening to an American English conversation.
A: Hey, what do you want to do this weekend?B: I don't know. We could see a movie or have dinner. Why don't we play it by ear?A: Sure.
"Play it by ear" means you aren't going to make a firm plan, but will decide what to do as you go along.
This idiom has a musical meaning too. When you don't have the written music for a song, but you play the notes that you think you've heard, you "play it by ear."
So when you are in a situation where you make a plan as you go, you're "playing it by ear".
And that's English in a Minute.

Playing by Ear - Train your ear through exercises and games.
.................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
One of the most basic skills is to identify that having been given 2 notes, is the last one higher or lower in tone. Challenge yourself to see if you can get ten out of 10. Make sure you get that green light on constant stream. Start with this game, and once you have mastered it, then go on to the more difficult ones, such as Play That Melody and Interval Training.
.................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
All melodies are comprised of notes with different intervals between them. Given 2 notes, are you able to determine the distance or how far apart they are. Intervals could be a minor 2nd, major 2nd, minor 3rd, major 3rd, perfect 4th, dimished 5th, perfect 5th, minor 6th, major 6th, minor 7th, major 7th and perfect octave.

One of the goals of playing the piano by ear, is to be able to play your favourite melodies. Practice makes perfect! With some of the most popular tunes such as Adagio For Strings, AHa - Take On Me, Andrew Lloyd Webber - Memory, A Team, Axel F, Brown Girl In The Ring, Coldplay - Clocks, Coldplay - Trouble, Cream - Sunshine Of Your Love, Deep Purple - Smoke On Water, Doctor Zhivago, Elvis - Love Me Tender, Evanescence - Bring Me To Life, Guns N Roses - Sweet Child Of Mine, Happy Birthday, Jaws Theme, Jingle Bells, Les miserables, Mission Impossible,Morning, My Way, Peter and The Wolf,Peter Gunn Tune, Pink Panther,Raiders of the Lost Ark, Rolling Stones - Satisfaction, Ronda Alla Turca, Scarborough Fair,Silent Night, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, Star Trek Theme,Star Wars, The Beatles - Yesterday, The Blue Danube, The Entertainer,The Simpsons, The Wedding March, The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and When the Saints Go Marching in which you can listen to, play, get feedback, find out how they should be played, the game provides a fun and easy way to learn your favourite tunes. And the more time spent doing this, you are subconsiously getting better at playing by ear. Start with just a few notes and slowly work your way up to knowing the whole song by controling the number of notes to be played back.

Choose any major or minor scale from the drop down box and select play scale. You need to know your scales if you wish to improvise.
.................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
Have a free play. Record, play and playback. Relax, have fun. The piano is the best instrument in the world.
.................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
To improvise, you play a few notes from a scale at a certain rhythm. If the computer can do it, you can do it alot better. You have soul!

For the most advanced user. Being able to distinguish 1 chord from the next. A great skill to have is the ability to distinguish a C Major, C minor, C Augmented, C dimished, C 7, C Major 7, C Minor 7, C dim 7, C half dim 7?
.................................................................................................................................................................................................................................
