Thick smoke has filled the air across parts of Montana, reducing the air quality and visibility in many areas.The Montana Department of Environmental Quality first issued an Air Quality Alert on&Wednesday for areas along Interstate 15.On Thursday,&the alert was extended until 9 a.m. on&F the alert may be extended throughout the day.As of 7 a.m. on Friday, the air quality was rated as &unhealthy& in several large Montana communities, including Great Falls, Helena, Missoula, Butte, and even as far east as Billings. The air quality was rated as &very unhealthy& in some areas, including Lewistown, Bozeman, and Hamilton.STORMTracker meteorologist Ryan Rose says&air particulate levels&are now exceeding national standards, prompting the issuance of the alert.&Dozens of wildfires burning in Montana, Idaho, Washington, and Oregon are producing smoke, which has arrived in Montana on strong westerly winds,& says Rose.Young children, the elderly, and people&who suffer from respiratory illnesses are advised to remain indoors until the air clears, or limit their time outdoors if they must go out.Rose says the smoke should thin out on Friday afternoon as a cold front moves through the state.On Friday afternoon, the increased winds associated with a cold front&may help improve air quality in some locations, while ushering in more smoke in others.&The DEQ provides this information about health affects of the smoky conditions:(Purple) When air quality is rated as &very unhealthy,&&health officials recommend that people with respiratory or heart disease, the elderly, and children should avoid
