When JetBlue captain Clayton Osbon became unpredictable, his co-pilot invented a reason for him to go back into the cabin.Once the captain was out of the cockpit (驾驶舱) , the co-pilot locked the door to keep the captain from returning.Passengers, some with law enforcement experience, calmed the captain. The flight changed course to Amarillo, Texas where the captain was hospitalized.Incidents in which a pilot has had an in-flight psychological breakdown are rare. But how could it happen at all? Though pilots are required to have an examination at least once a year by a physician approved by the FAA, there are no formal procedures in place to test pilots for signs of psychological problems. At most airlines, pilots are members of a union.A pilot who appears to have a psychological or an alcohol problem can be reported to a union member whose job it is to investigate. If there is a problem, the pilot is given the choice of getting treatment or being reported to management. But at airlines, such as Allegiant, JetBlue, and Virgin American where there is no union, pilots are – to say the least - unwilling to report a fellow pilot to management. In most professions, a person experiencing emotional difficulties is free to consult a doctor.Rut an airline pilot in therapy is viewed with suspicion both by the airline and by the FAA.No pilot wants to be put under extra examination by an agency that has the power to revoke their license or end their employment. That being the case, pilots are less likely than people in other professions to seek help. There may be no way to make sure this never happens again, but its possibility can be reduced. Tests such as the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory ( MMPI) can reliably detect depression, paranoia, schizophrenia, and other problems. The FAA could require pilots to take the MMPI or a similar test on a periodic basis.Whether such testing becomes required will depend upon the public's response to this incident and whether additional incidents take place. Flying is remarkably safe. But incidents such as this cause concern.小题1:What does the underlined word "revoke" most probably mean?A.delayB.cancelC.interruptD.renew小题2:Why are some pilots unwilling to report a fellow pilot to management?A.Because they are tested for signs of psychological problems every year.B.Because they are likely to be treated by physicians.C.Because they are supported by the airlines.D.Because they might be fired.小题3:What is the author' s attitude towards the incident?A.satisfiedB.indifferentC.concernedD.disapproving小题4:In which part of the newspaper can the passage be found?A.EntertainmentB.SportsC.BusinessD.Society

Thirty-two people watched kitty Genovese being killed right beneath their windows. She was their neighbor. Yet none of the 32 helped her. Not one even called the police. Was this in gunman cruelty? Was it lack of feeling about one’s fellow man?Not so, say scientists John Barley and Bib Fatane. These men went beyond the headlines to probe(探查) the reasons why people didn’t act. They found that a person has to go through two steps before he can help. First he has to notice that is an emergency(紧急情况). Suppose you see a middle-aged man fall to the side-walk. Is he having a heart attack? Is he in a coma (昏迷) from diabetes(糖尿病)? Or is he about to sleep off a drunk? Is the smoke coming into the room from a leak in the air conditioning? Is it steam pipes? Or is it really smoke from a fire? It’s not always easy to tell if you are faced with a real emergency. Second, and more important, the person faced with an emergency must feel personally responsible. He must feel that he must help, or the person won’t get the help he needs. The researchers found that a lot depends on how many people are around. They had college students in to be tested. Some came alone. Some came with one or two others. And some came in large groups. The receptionist started them off on the tests. Then she went into the next room. A curtain divided the testing room and the room into which she went. Soon the students heard a scream, the noise of file cabinets falling and a cry for help. All of this had been pre-recorded on a tape-recorder.Eight out of ten of the students taking the test alone acted to help. Of the students in pairs, only two out of ten helped. Of the students in groups, none helped. In other words, in a group, Americans often fail to act. They feel that others will act. They, themselves, needn’t. They do not feel any direct responsibility. Are people bothered by situations where people are in trouble? Yes. Scientists found that the people were emotional, they sweated, they had trembling hands. They felt the other person’s trouble. But they did not act. They were in a group. Their actions were shaped by the actions of those they were with.小题1:The purpose of this passage is_________.A.to explain why people fail to act in emergencies B.to explain when people will act in emergencies C.to explain what people will do in emergencies D.to explain how people feel in emergencies小题2:Which of the following is NOT true?A.When a person tries to help others, he must be clear that there is a real emergency.B.When a person tries to help others, he should know whether hey are worth his help. C.A person must take the full responsibility for the safety of those in emergencies if he wants to help. D.A person with a heart attack needs the most.小题3: The researchers have conducted an experiment to prove that people will act in emergencies when__________.A.they are in pairs B.they are in groups C.they are alone D.they are with their friends小题4:The main reason why people fail to act when they stay together is that _________.A.they are afraid of emergencies B.they are reluctant to get themselves involved C.others will act if they themselves hesitate D.they do not have any direct responsibility for those who need help

Many people know the names Alexander Graham Bell and Thomas Edison. However, most people don’t know the name of the man who invented the television, Philo Farnsworth.Philo Farnsworth was born in 1906 and grew up on a potato farm. As a boy, he loved to learn about science, and he read a lot of science books. When he was only thirteen years old, he drew a picture of a machine that could send pictures as radio sends sounds. He got the idea from the way the potatoes were planted in the field. The potatoes grew in long lines, side by side. This made a shape in Philo’s mind. This shape helped Philo think of a way to send the TV picture onto a piece of glass. But he was poor, so Philo could not try to make his idea into a machine at that time.Later, Philo worked at many different jobs. He worked with trees. He worked on broken radios. He worked on trains. He also worked as a street cleaner. At last, two rich men heard about his idea for television, and they gave him the money to make it. On September 7th, 1927, they watched Philo test the machine he built. When Philo turned on the machine, a small line could be seen on the glass. Philo said, “There you have it, electric television.”Later, a big company, RCA, said they had made the first television. Philo had to spend a lot of money on lawyers to fight them. Finally, he won. I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch in San Ysidro. He has let me use his house to put on fund-raising events to raise money for youth at risk programs. The last time I was there he introduced me by saying, "I want to tell you why I let Jack use my house.” It all goes back to a story about a young man who was the son of a horse trainer who would go from stable to stable, race track to race track, farm to farm and ranch to ranch, training horses. For eighty four days old Santiago had not caught a single fish. At first a young boy, Manolin, had shared his bad fortune, but after the fortieth luckless day the boy’s father told his son to go in another boat. From that time on, Santiago worked alone. The boy loved the old fisherman and& always helped him with money and food. Usually, they would talk about the fish they had taken in luckier times or about American baseball after supper, while at night, alone in his cottage, Santiago dreamed of lions on the beaches of Africa, where he had gone years before. He no longer dreamed of his dead wife.On the eighty-fifth day, Santiago set off to fish before dawn. Two of his baits(饵) were fresh tunas(金枪鱼) the boy had given him, as well as sardines(沙丁鱼) to cover his hooks. Then he set his lines which went straight down into deep dark water. As the sun rose he saw other boats in toward shore. A bird showed him where dolphin were chasing some flying fish. This time Santiago saw tuna jumping in the sunlight. A small one took the hook on his line. Pulling the fish aboard, the old man thought it a good fortune.Toward noon a marlin, a common fish in the sea, started eating the bait which was one hundred meters down. Gently the old man played the fish, a big one, as he knew from the weight on the line. At last he struck to settle the hook. The fish did not come out of the surface. Instead, it began to pull the boat to the northwest. The old man followed it. Although he was alone and no longer strong, he had his skill and knew many tricks. He waited patiently for the fish to be tired .It was cold after the sunset. When something took one of his remaining baits, he cut the line with his knife. Once the marlin leaned suddenly, pulling Santiago forward on his face and cutting his cheek. By dawn his left hand was cramped(抽筋的). The fish
there was no land in sight. Hungry, he cut pieces from the tuna and chewed them slowly. That morning the fish jumped. Seeing it, Santiago knew he had hooked the biggest marlin he had ever seen. Then the fish went down and turned toward the east. Santiago drank a little water from the bottle during the hot afternoon. Close to nightfall a dolphin took the small hook he had rebaited. He lifted it aboard, careful. After he had rested, he cut meat from the dolphin and kept also the two flying fish he found in its stomach. That night he slept. He awoke to feel the line running through his fingers as the fish jumped. Feeding line slowly, he tried to tire the marlin. After the fish slowed its run, he washed his cut hands in sea water and ate one of the flying fish. At sunrise the marlin began to circle. Faint, he worked to bring the big fish nearer with each turn. Almost exhausted, he finally drew his big fish alongside and drove in the harpoon(鱼叉). The fish was two feet longer than the boat. No fish like it had ever been seen in Havana harbor. An hour later, he sighted the first shark, a fierce Mako, and it came in fast to chase after the dead marlin. The old man struck the shark with his harpoon. The Mako rolled and sank, carrying the harpoon with it and leaving the marlin bloody. He knew the smell would spread. Watching, he saw two sharks closing in. He struck at one with his knife and watched it sliding down into deep water. The other he killed while it tore at the flesh of the marlin. When the third appeared, he thrust(刺) it with the knife. The other sharks came at sunset. At first he tried to beat them with the tiller(舵柄) from the boat, but his hands were bleeding and there were too many in the sea. In the darkness, as he steered toward the harbor of Havana, he heard them hitting the boat again and again. But the old man thought only of his steering and his great tiredness. He had gone out too far and the sharks had beaten him. He knew they would leave him nothing but the stripped skeleton of the big marlin. All lights were out when he sailed into the little harbor and beached his boat. He could just make out the white backbone and the upstanding tail of the fish. Once he fell under their weight and lay patiently until he could gather his strength to go on. In his cottage he fell on his bed and went to sleep. 小题1:The above story is adapted from __________.A.Treasure Island B.The Adventures Of Tom SawyerC.The Old Man And The Sea D.The Son Of The Sea 小题2:Why did the man feel that he could be lucky this time?A.Because a small tuna took the hook on his line.B.Because he dreamed about the American lions.C.Because he saw many flying fish were chased by the dolphins.D.Because a lot of sharks followed his boat.小题3:According to the text, which statement is NOT true about Manolin?A.The boy had mercy on Santiago.B.The boy often shared his stories with Santiago.C.The boy showed his great concerns to Santiago.D.The boy was Santiago’s adopted son.小题4:Why does Santiago let the marlin lead his boat instead of pulling the big fish up?A.He wanted to kill the marlin first before he pulled it up to the boat.B.He was too tired and hungry to pull the big fish up.C.His experience told him not to do so before the fish was tired out.D.He wanted to use the marlin as a bait to catch the sharks.小题5: Which sentence below can be used to best describe Santiago’s character?A.“He no longer dreamed of his dead wife.”(Para 1)B.“Although he was alone and no longer strong, he had his skill and knew many tricks.”(Para4)C.“Almost exhausted, he finally drew his big fish alongside and drove in the harpoon.”(Para7) D.“Once he fell under their weight and lay patiently until he could gather his strength to go on .”(Para 9)小题6: According to the text, what will be talked about in the next paragraph?A.the man’s action to realize his dream about the lions.B.people’s reflection when they saw the giant marlin outside.C.people’s discussion about how they ate the giant marlin.D.a funeral held by the boy and the local people after his death.
