Hi this is Sean Martin.
Welcome to the new Railroad Jobs forum.
My goal with this forum is so that others can share information on RR jobs, who is hiring, how to get hired, job tips, strategies, etc….
I will be hanging out here helping as many people as I can.
I am doing away with the email due to huge amounts of spam coming into my inbox and this forum will actually be a better place to answer questions because everyone will be able to see the answer and benefit from it.
Thanks for coming by and participating!
I have been pursueing railroad positions for about six months now. I purchased your guide and have read it and like it. I am thinking I may have to redue my resume and cover letter and would like to know if you have any inexpensive options in this category?
Thanks,Joe
My name is Abid Qureshi,I worked for amtrak for almost 4 years, and then I resigned,because I got a state Government job with regular timing ie 9 to 5.I was tired of
irregular working hrs with amtrak,as I had two kids, and there was not much help to look after themn, so I resigned from amtrak, and that was my worst decision of my life.Unfortunately in state job, I have to commute 2 hrs each way, and it was not worth it, as fuel cost was very high and there was no chance of transfer of my position to orange county,so I have to resign that job too.I tried to go back to amtrak,but as I did not give two week notice,they did not rehire me.I was working as Train attendant for amtrak,I really enjoyed it,medical benefits were excellent and salary was great.
Now i am looking for conductor trainee position in any railroad company at anywhere in usa.i am ready to reallocate.I applied several railroad companies,but nothing except regret letter.Now I am totally frustrated,despite railroad experience,still unable to get job.Sean, please advise me,what to do in order to get any railroad job.I will appreciate it. Thanks Abid
Hi, I recently finished an associates degree and have tried for 4 months to try and get an interview with BNSF (clerk,conductor trainee, laboror, whatever just to get in). So far not a word other than I was not selected. I since purchesed your book and there were some great tips in there. I since have changed my resume and application a little and applied for a transportation manager trainee and yet another conductor trainee position. I’ll let you know if I get an interview.
Hello Everyone!!! This is great I hope to find some great advice in here from a lot of people including Sean!! I recently applied with UP for an Installation Tech position but did not get an interview, would anyone like to go over my resume and tell me how it is or at least what could be changed.

Great idea for the forum, Sean. Should prove beneficial to all who participate! I’m a little old (probably) in my early 60s to be a railroad conductor, but have been accepted into a grad program in transportation and logistics management that I hope will give me a chance to work in the rail/intermodal industry from a different perspective. I had the good fortune to ride Amtrak last week or two different runs (Michigan and Virginia) and found the experience delightful, especially after dealing with airline travel for the past few years. And there were even employees my age running the train…that was an eye-opener!!!! Good luck to all in yo there is something unique about a train and the history behind the rail industry that did so much to create our great country.
Thank you for the information.
It is clear the expectations the railroad has makes it difficult to get a job.
I have an opportunity in my city to take a Conductor course.
Although the railroad needs no experience, is it worth the money.
During the course the students get at least 2 interviews with CN and or CP.
What happens if at that time you do not do so well in the interview, what chances of getting another interview will you have.
Hi Sean, I want to thank you for doing what your doing. Information about rail jobs is not easily found unless you can think outside the box. All the knowledge that I have gathered
over countless days and weeks are put into simple and easy to read text by yourself.I do endless research and get the answers that I’m looking for but one thing I do want is your book, all in due time. Its too soon for me to say anything else but so far your emails are right on TRACK!
Hey everyone. My name is Justin. I have been interested in working for UP since shortly before the hiring freeze a few years ago. I recently applied for a Diesel Mechanic position with UP adn was given a chance to test for it on the Skills Battery Test. I qualified on teh test and I am now just waiting on notification for an interview. Has anyone on here been a mechanic or known someone who has been a RR mechanic? I am trying to get myself as prepared as possible for my interview. Thanks.
I have been trying to get a BNSF conductor job in CA. I have a couple friends working for BNSF now but they don’t seem to know what to say when I ask for advice. I did find the e-book helpful in most cases. The location I’m trying for has 2 to 3 postings a year and my friends there tell me that close to a 1/3 of the current employees are at retirement age so this seems like a good place to try and get hired. My question is about lack of applicable experience. While I’ve worked with heavy machinery many many years ago I’ve been doing a desk/computer job for more than 10 years now. Would it be worth while to go to a school and get some sort of training? The people I have talked to give me mixed messages. Some say that they will train you anyway and that it’s wasted money others think It might at least move me up the list when there are a lot of applicants.
What are your thoughts?
Hi. My name is Jason Payne. Been trying to get railroad work for about 3 years now. The majority of that time, was when the railroads were in a ‘freeze’ and simply wasn’t hiring now. I had purchased my book from Sean at that time, and read it. I had heard the railroads where hiring again, and started to apply to some of them, (all I think), and had lost my saved copy of the book from sean. With a simple email to sean, he sent me another copy and Its giving me some useful tips yet again! He is really doing a lot to help perspective people get that dream job of the hard work at a railroad. Thanks sean, and I am glad to meet everyone. Maybe we can all help each other! Good luck everyone in your job searches.
Hi I’m Peter. I once tried to fill out an application with Conrail at thier Newark, NJ office back in the early 80′s. I drove up there and got as far as the security shack outside the building and was told that I had to have an appointment to fill out an application. So I went back home and called and found out that there was a 5 year waiting time for an appointment to fill out an application. Needless to say that killed that idea. Now here I am at age 54 and I’m going to make another attempt. I got Seans book and I’m redoing my resume. Hopefully I will have better luck.
Hi everyone. I have been a UP conductor for over 5 Yrs. now.
I actually just stumbled on the job after retiring from the military. I believe they were looking for military, I.e. wanting consistent work history and discipline. I work in Phoenix but now I want to relocate and have applied to NS in the Ohio area. I have been shot down twice but I’m not giving up.
Wow! Thanks everyone for participating!
Try to follow the sample resume in my RR jobs guide e-book.
Re-write it yourself.
Yeah you made a mistake by not giving notice but can’t do anything about it now.
You may want to try applying for some of the excursion (tourist) trains since you have experience with Amtrack already.
Then also keep applying at the freight rr’s as well.
Good Luck!
@Ryan Stringham
There is a sample resume inside the RR’s Jobs Guide e-book.
Check it out because it will help you tremendously.
Your welcome!
Hey good luck with your schooling and your welcome to stick around the forum!
If you can afford the course then take it.
Get the RR jobs guide ebook BEFORE you do your interview because I have sample questions they will ask you in the interview!
@Diesel Man
At the risk of sounding self serving (again) lol get a copy of the RR jobs guide because it will help you in your interviews!
Don’t quit your job to go to school in this economy is my advice.
The desk job is ‘ok’ but you want to be able to give them some outdoors work experience… for example you own your own landscaping company on the side, or roofing company etc… get my drift?
Thanks Jason, good luck!
@Peter Mitchell
Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.
Also apply at the Class 2 rr’s in your area along with the other Class 1 and Class 3 RR’s…
I answered your post in another thread.
Good luck on trying to get hired in a different area.
You have experience so I don’t know why they would not hire you.
Thanks again everyone for participating in the forum.
Probably within a week or so I am going to shut down my email and answer all questions in the forum.
Have a good week!

3. What is your greatest strength?(你最突出的优点是什么?) I feel that my strongest asset is my ability to stick to things to get them done. I feel a real sense of accomplishment when I finish a job and it turns out just as I’d planned. I’ve set some high goals for myself. For example, I want to graduate with highest distinction. And even though I had a slow start in my freshman year, I made up for it by doing an honor’s thesis. 4. What is your greatest weakness?(你最大的弱点是什么?) I'm such a perfectionist that I will not stop until a job is well done. 英语面试实战指南
