One of the most common complaints of people living in the city is annoying neighbors. Here are some ways to handle noisy neighbors. Accept Some Degree of Apartment NoiseBefore getting worked up over the noisy neighbors in the apartment, make sure to have realistic expectations. Everyone living in an apartment building is bound to hear noise from other units' televisions, music, and children occasionally.   Understand Noisy Neighbors from their point of viewIt's probably the case that the neighbor who is driving everyone crazy doesn't realize how far his noise is carrying. Remember that noise level is difficult to control with children. Babies unavoidably cry in the middle of the night. Meet the Neighbors and Be Friendly Making a friendly gesture will surprisingly reduce apartment noise. Neighbors who know each other will probably be much more careful not to bother each other.   Address Noise Calmly and Face-to-Face  If a loud noise needs to be addressed, go to the offending apartment personally and knock politely on the door. Being polite will usually bring a polite response Report Noisy Neighbors to the Landlord If a noise issue becomes a constant problem or doesn't improve after a personal request, it's time to bring it up to management. Make sure to be objective and fair in your report, and be able to record the frequency of the problem and provide details about it.   Things to Avoid when Dealing with a Loud Neighbor There are some  "don't"s  when it comes to dealing life with a loud apartment neighbor. Don't ·Seek revenge(报复) or try to "outdo" a noisy neighbor · Complain to them face to face repeatedly about the same issue ?· Suffer in silence Doing these things may work for some time, but they're never good long-term solutions. Instead, they will probably only exacerbate the situation.  32. The author agrees that __________________________.        . A. we could seek revenge on noisy neighbors B. families with children can control the noise level easily  C. friendly gesture has a good effect on reducing apartment noise   D. people are aware that their noise has a great effect on their neighbors 33. The underlined word "exacerbate" in the last Paragraph is closest in meaning to  _______       .A. worsen         &  B. accept      &&  C. improve     &&& D.  reduce 34. What should we do if a noise issue becomes a constant problem?  A. Warn the noisy neighbor of the problem.     B. Complain to the noisy neighbors repeatedly.  C. Report the situation to the landlord objectively.     D. Talk to the noisy neighbors face to face politely. 35. What would be the best title for this passage?   A. Who are your apartment neighbors?   B. How to be a popular apartment neighbor?   C. How to deal with noisy apartment neighbors?   D. How to make friends with apartment neighbors?

Robert Frost was one of America’s best known and most honored serious writers. But his fame came late in his life. He was born in San Francisco, California in 1874. He lived in California during his early& childhood. He was named after the chief Southern general in America’s Civil War. The general’s name was Robert Edward Lee. The poet was named Robert Lee Frost, because his father wanted to honor the general. Someone once asked another American writer, Ernest Hemingway, how to become a writer. The best thing, he said, was to have an unhappy childhood. If this is true, Robert Frost’s childhood was unhappy enough to make him a very good writer. The book was called A Boy’s Will. When it appeared in 1913. Frost received high praise from British readers. Praise was something he had not received in his own country. Health experts have long worried about the increasing rate of obesity in kids. It’s an important concern: Being very overweight or obese during childhood can lead to serious problems normally seen in adults, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Poor diets and a lack of exercise are usually the causes. But would you ever have imagined there might be a connection between the bacteria that lived in your guts (内脏)when you were a baby and the chance that you would become overweight? Scientists in Finland recently found just such a link. In a recent study, they showed that overweight kids had different species of bacteria living in their guts. You probably think of bacteria only as germs that can make you sick. While it’s true that some bacteria can make people ill, your body actually depends on some types of bacteria to help you digest food and extract nutrients from it. These “good” bacteria live in your guts, where they process the food you eat.Human babies get these bacterial helpers from their moms. When a baby is born, some of the bacteria in the mother move into the baby’s body. Growing babies get additional “good” bacteria from the milk their mothers produce. And it turns out the bacteria might play an important role in regulating weight just six years later. So how could these bacteria affect weight? The researchers still haven’t tested that question, but future tests might lead to an answer.【小题1】The “link” in Paragraph 2 refers to the relationship between _______.A.bacteria and the chance of being overweightB.obesity and diabetesC.diets and the chance of being overweightD.bacteria and exercise【小题2】Which of the following is NOT the function of “good” bacteria? A team of US psychologists have found that talking to another person for ten minutes a day helps with memory. "Socializing is just as effective as more traditional kinds of mental exercise in boosting memory and intellectual performance," Oscar Ybarra, a psychologist at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research, said in a statement. In one investigation, they analyzed data on 3610 people, aged 24 to 96. They found that the higher their level of social interaction (交流), the better their cognitive (认知的) functioning.& Social interaction includes getting together or having phone chats with relatives, freinds and neighbors. In another experiment, the researchers conducted lab tests on 76 college students, aged 18 to 21, to evaluate how social interactions and intellectual exercises affected the results of memory and mental performance tests. The students were divided into three groups: the social interaction group had a discussion of a social issue for 10 minutes bef the intellectual activities group completed three tasks (including a reading comprehension exercise and a crossword puzzle) and a control group (对照组) watched a 10-minute clip (电源片段) of the Seinfeld television show. "We found that short-term social interaction lasting for just 10 minutes improved participants’ intellectual performance as much as engaging in so-called ’intellectual’ activities for the same amount of time," Ybarra said. Who are these people rushing by you in the street?
More than 215 million people now call America “home’’, but most of them can
trace their families back to other parts of the world. If you look at the names
on shop windows, you will see that Americans come from many different lands. The
idea that these people, who once were strangers to the United States, have lost
the customs and cultures of their original countries and have become
“American’’is really not true. In fact, what exists in America is more often a
kind of “side-by-side”, living in which groups of people from other countries
often have kept many of their customs and habits. They join the general
American society only in certain areas of their lives—such as in schools, business,
and sports-but they keep many of their own native customs and manners socially
and at home. This living “side-by-side” has both advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes
it may cause disagreements to develop between groups whose ways of life are
very different from one another. However, there are also great advantages that
come from the variety of cultures brought by settlers from other lands. There
is great freedom of choice among ideas and dress, food, and social customs in
America. Everyone can find some part of his or her familiar world in the United
States, in Churches, music, food, national groups, or newspapers.
