AttachmentsUbuntu Networking :: 10.04 Wired Network Disconnected - You Are Now Offline
Sep 1, 2011
I just installed Ubuntu 10.04, complete noob, but I can't connect to the internet. I connect the ethernet cable, select auto ethernet and the icon animates for about 30 seconds. But then I get a notification &Wired network Disconnected - you are now offline&.
Don't know what other information I should provide. I tried a few things from different posts like editing the dhcpclient.config but don't really know what I'm doing and none of these worked anyways. I'm not even sure if they were solutions to a similar problem! I'm using the same connection on my Mac OS 10.4.11 (different machine) and I have no problems. Could I use these same settiings in Ubuntu? I don't know what the different fields represent or what I should input in manual settings.

Everything worked fine until I downloaded some Ubuntu upgrades. Now, every time I try to connect to internet via network manager it says: & Network: Disconnected - you are now offline&. so what to do...

The title message appears when I log in. Neither wired nor wireless network adapters show in ifconfig output. Network manager shows a simple networking disabled greyed out message. Both adapters work in live cd boot. Everything was wor I'm not sure what happened.

I'm having network problems and I have no idea how to fix it. At first, my internet connection was suffering on all computers on my network (Mac, Windows and Ubuntu 11,04). So, I disconnected my cable-modem and then reconnected. Nothing.... So, I rebooted my Windows machine and the internet came back on that computer. I then went to my Ubuntu computer and clicked on &auto eth0& (per the way I interpreted instructions from the internet). The symbol turned from the &two arrows& to what looks like a wireless, looking for a signal. I thought that maybe I should just reboot, as I did with Windows. However, when I did reboot, that same wireless symbol was there, then a message came up saying:Code:Wired Network: You are now disconnectedI can't seem to get my internet connection back on my Ubuntu computer, though it is working on every other computer on my network.

I installed xubunto 10.4 on my pc the other day and every thing was working fine and then the next day my wired network card went down. So I restarted it and it say Wired Network Disconnected. I tried doing sudo ifconfig eht0 up to try and bring the card back online but nothing happens. I also tried reinstalling xubuntu on my computer. Again my internet works then starts freezing up so I restart it and my ethernet card goes down again. I have tried also plugging it into the second ether net port on my computer but that does not seem to work. Also I went into my dhclient-script and went to the bottom to look at my network card stuff.It reads #Changed from 'ifconfig $interface inet 0 down' - see Debian bug #144666 ifconfig $interface inet 0exit_with_hooks 2 &$@&fi

My friend has 2 pcs, one connected to the internet and the other one used to connect (when he had windows installed) to the internet through the first one using internet sharing, now i installed ubuntu on both and the network between them has been created but it wont connect, the internet icons just animates for like a minute then says &wired internet disconnected& in other words it failed to connect.

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on a brand new laptop, an install done by the company I ordered the notebook from.
I have some limited experience with Linux and Ubuntu especially.I know that I'm not connected to a wired network.
I haven't so much as plugged in a network cable, but the graphic appears erratically on the right hand side of the screen like I am connecting, then disconnecting.
I've tried disabling the eth0 connection altogether, but no dice.
I can't figure out how to make it stop.

I'm stuck after a clean install of FC14 on an old Everex StepNote (Doing this for a friend). I tried Ubuntu on it first (because it's so easy) but had horrible stability issues and terminal commands wouldn't respond - however Ubuntu detected and ran the eth0 port just fine. FC14 detects my ethernet NIC, but it won't work. Here are my details.lspci outputs this for my NIC:00:12:0 Ethernet controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6102 [Rhine-II] (rev 7c)Here is what I have tried so far - with no luck:- I have toggled the networking switch on the laptop and had no luck.- Downloaded Via's VT6102 drivers for Fedora Core, but they don't support kernel 2.6.35.*- Run ifconfig to manually assign an IP address - which it DID take and did route add default gw as well.- Did a ifconfig eth0 down and up as well.After all that, I still have a &disconnected& wired connection (and yes, I did check the cable - it works just fine in my personal machine.

I have two PCs one has Windows XP the other has Ubuntu 9.10 on it, the Windows PC has no problems getting on the Internet (I'm posting this with it) and getting an IP address from the wired router. The wired router I have is ONLY wired it does not have wireless at all, it is currently setup to hand out IP addresses between 192.168.1.2 and 192.168.1.254.The Ubunutu 9.10 PC worked great last night surfed all over the place for hours, then finally shut it down last night when I went to bed, shut down appeared to be normal like it always does when it shuts down, then this morning when I booted it up it gave error: &WIRED NETWORK - disconnected you are now offline&.

I'm running Ubuntu Karmic Server with Xfce desktop, the problem is the network manager, it says it is disconnected, even though I am connected to my network and getting an internet connection. It wouldn't normally bother me, but I'm trying to setup a VPN using the network-manager-openvpn plugin. I put in the required details for the VPN connection, but as soon as I tick the &apply to all users& box, the information is lost. The information will remain if I don't tick that box, but it will not connect. when I try to select the VPN connection I just setup, nothing happens. I've tried the exact same configuration on another desktop, running Ubuntu Karmic with Gnome desktop, the network manager works fine, my ethernet connection is showing as connected, and I can connect to the VPN no problem, the problem lies with the network manager in Xfce. Is there anyway I can get it to show as connected? it wont allow me to connect to the VPN otherwise, it's silly, because that adapter has a full working network connection.

i have limited experience with Ubuntu and Linux for that matter. i know my way around for the most part but i come from windows. anyway. i have 6 dell gx260 computers. i also have a netgear 8 port Ethernet switch. now im just trying to get the computers to see each other. simple for me in windows. but i have no idea where to start here. it just says connecting to eth0 then network disconnected. and thats it. for now im just working with 2 of the computers. the others are not set up yet. i have been googling for 3 days and got nothing that helps. (my goal after they see each other is to share files back and forth. and also to have one of them control the others with some type of remote desktop. but thats for another day.)

Recently, I had the courage of installing Fedora 11 on my laptop while risking of trashing my Windows XP. Fortunately, the installation went fine and windows and fedora seems to be working together. But I needed to reinstall Fedora because I didn't do the partitioning right. After that the problem arises. I couldn't connect to the wlan. The first installation it was working fine. Now I can't. I select the network, enter the password and then it just says &Disconnected& or something like that then nothing else happens. So I had to reinstall it again thinking I did something wrong on the installation. But still it wasn't working. But it seems to be working when I boot from the live cd. I must have messed up my network configuration.

On my Linux box, (which is a
proxy, webserver, mailserver, etc. etc. etc.) I use static IP's.
Network manager is turned off, but when you do that Firefox ALWAYS has WORK OFFLINE checked.
I could use Network Manager but that's not really the right way, cause I need the servers to work in level 3, etc. as well...Anyways, anyone know a way to make FF behave if I use Static IP without NM?

entries for connecting to broadband. Was OK with ubuntu 8.04 which had boxes for DNS server, etc. The 10.04 asks for MAC address (?) and there is a space for &DHCP client ID&. &Need help with entries for connecting to broadband. Was OK with ubuntu 8.04 which had boxes for DNS server, etc. The 10.04 asks for MAC address (?) and there is a space for &DHCP client ID&. I don't understand these terms. I will appreciate some step-by-step instruction or example of how I may proceed, especially exact syntax for any command line work. I am in Chennai/Madras, and have a BSNL wired broadband connection to my Dell laptop.& I have repeated what I tried in the ubuntu forum without success. I'm really in newbie category, and not comfortable with computer or internet jargon. I can still connect with ubuntu 8.04 and firefox, just once daily. In a later post I also added: In Ubuntu 8.04 there was a system& admin& network tab (missing in 10.04). In the connections tab &wired& was checked. The general tab had my computer name (tsq-laptop) for host, and a blank box for domain name. The DNS tab had 192.168.1.1 in the servers box (presumably my service provider BSNL), and nothing in search domains. The hosts tab had a list of IP addresses and aliases, the first few being:127.0.0.1 - local host127.0.1.1 - tsq-laptop::1 - ip6 local host ip6 loopbackfe00:: - ip6 localnet, .... (and a few more such I think most (or all) of these entries were generated automatically by the system, since I don't understand the jargon at all! I don't recall having any difficulties then, some two years back.Before that I had major problems in using the internal modem for a dial-up connection, but got detailed help by e-mail/internet from some really knowledgeable people in Europe and elsewhere regarding linmodem configuration, which I followed blindly and it worked!In 10.04 there is only the taskbar icon to edit settings, and it has a different structure. It asks for MAC address (example 00.11.22.33.44.55). Other info required is IPv4 settings, DHCP client ID, about routers and other stuff. There may be other system settings to be made, which I can try with proper guidance. The ubuntu help page gives very sketchy information, and the images are not clear at all. No response to that till second day. Subsequently: In the 'wired' tab the 'routes' button popped a table where I entered address as 127.0.0.1, and netmask as 255.0.0.0, leaving gateway and metric blank. This is all geek stuff for me - I'm an old-fashioned engineer from the slide-rule era!Should all this have been in the newbie forum? Thanks, =TeeSquare=

I'm having a problem where the wired network wired network (eth0) disconnects when the connection is idle for a while (usually tens of minutes). It works fine every time I boot up, but eventually it dies, and I can't ping the machine, or ping anything from the machine.
ifconfig shows that it still has an IP address.
Running ifdown/ifup causes it to work again.
I intend for this machine to be a server, so I can't afford to go restart it when I need network access. sudo lshw -class network gives me this:[Code]...

I just installed (dual-boot with Vista) Ubuntu 9.10 in my Toshiba Satellite M300. The problem is that (when using Ubuntu 9.10), its network is dead, both wireless and wired. The LEDs of the LAN port don't even blink. My wifi is not also detected. Both of my wifi device and LAN port are functional when using Vista.

I am running ubuntu 9.10 on a dell xps m1530 laptop dual booting with windows 7. I am trying to achieve the following setup.Wireless router &=========& Laptop &-----& Switch &-----& PS3---- wired==== wirelessBoth laptop and ps3 have static ip addressesThe reason for this is I can connect to the internet on my ps3 through my laptop, and I can stream from my laptop to ps3 through wired connection. This works fine in windows 7 all I had to do was right click bridge connections. As I dual boot I don't want to have to make any changes to the settings on the ps3.My interfaces are:eth0 - wiredwlan0 - wirelessI installed bridge-utils and created a bridge and added both eth0 and wlan0 to it. However I could not get it to work. I have also tried internet sharing through network manager and firestarter.

I have just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on an HP Pavilion dv6000 series laptop, dual-boot. Everything is working except the networking. It can see wireless networks, and when I type in the password for my wireless network, it tries to connect, then asks for the password again. When I plug in the Ethernet cable, again it tries to connect, but after a few seconds gives up and tells me I am now offline.

Client disconnected between Application.LoadLevel and OnLevelWasLoaded
Hi everyone, I have a basic network level loading question.
To test the project, I use two copies of my unity project and use one Unity instance to launch the server, and the other one to run the client.
I followed the guidelines described in
I have a scene with one gameobject and a camera. The gameobject has a component NetworkManager. On the client, it instantiates a NetworkClientManager and on the server it instantiates a NetworkServerManager.
I successfully managed to connect the client and the server. So I tried to load a level from the server, but the client get disconnected during the level loading.
This is the server code
using UnityE
using System.C
[RequireComponent(typeof(NetworkView))]
public class NetworkServerManager : MonoBehaviour
private int LastLoadedLevelPrefix = 0;
public NetworkConnectionError NetworkStatus {}
void Awake()
// Network group for network management
networkView.group = 1;
void Start()
// Initialize server when NetworkServerManager is started
NetworkStatus = Network.InitializeServer(10, 25000);
void OnPlayerConnected(NetworkPlayer player)
Debug.Log(&Player connected & + player.ToString());
// This is called on the server
void OnPlayerDisconnected(NetworkPlayer player)
Debug.Log(&Player disconnected & + player.ToString());
void OnGUI()
if (NetworkStatus == NetworkConnectionError.NoError && GUI.Button(new Rect(0, 0, 128, 64), &Load Level&))
Network.RemoveRPCsInGroup(0);
Network.RemoveRPCsInGroup(1);
networkView.RPC(&LoadLevel&, RPCMode.AllBuffered, &main&, LastLoadedLevelPrefix + 1);
void LoadLevel(string levelName, int prefix)
LastLoadedLevelPrefix =
Network.SetSendingEnabled(0, false);
Network.isMessageQueueRunning =
Network.SetLevelPrefix(prefix);
Application.LoadLevel(&main&);
Debug.Log(&Loading level&);
void OnLevelWasLoaded(int level)
Debug.Log(&Sending data&);
Network.isMessageQueueRunning =
Network.SetSendingEnabled(0, true);
And now, the client side code :
using UnityE
using System.C
[RequireComponent(typeof(NetworkView))]
public class NetworkClientManager : MonoBehaviour
public NetworkConnectionError? NetworkStatus {}
public void Connect(string ip)
NetworkStatus = Network.Connect(ip, 25000);
public void Disconnect()
Network.Disconnect(200);
void Awake()
networkView.group = 1;
void OnEnable()
NetworkStatus =
void OnDisable()
Disconnect();
void OnConnectedToServer()
Debug.Log(&Connected to server&);
void OnGUI()
if (GUI.Button(new Rect(0, 0, 128, 64), &Disconnect&))
Disconnect();
void OnDisconnectedFromServer(NetworkDisconnection info)
Debug.Log(&Disconnected & + info.ToString());
NetworkStatus =
Destroy(this);
void LoadLevel(string level, int levelPrefix)
Network.SetSendingEnabled(0, false);
Network.isMessageQueueRunning =
Network.SetLevelPrefix(levelPrefix);
Application.LoadLevel(level);
Debug.Log(Network.peerType);
void OnLevelWasLoaded(int level)
Debug.Log(Network.peerType);
ObserverManager.ObserverCamera.gameObject.active =
Debug.Log(&Sending data&);
Network.isMessageQueueRunning =
Network.SetSendingEnabled(0, true);
The logs on the server are:
Running as server. Player ID is 0.
New connection established (127.0.0.1:62466)
Network protocol version - connected
New scope index 0 is now in scope for SceneID: 3 Level Prefix: 0
Allocated 2 batches of size 50 for player 1
Sent initalization to player 1
Player connected 1
0 RPC function were removed with RemoveRPC
0 RPC function were removed with RemoveRPC
Loading level
Sent RPC call 'LoadLevel' to all connected clients
Added RPC 'LoadLevel' to buffer.
Sending data
A client has disconnected from this server. Player ID 1, IP 127.0.0.1:62466
Player disconnected 1
And on the client :
Running as client. No player ID set yet.
Connected to 127.0.0.1:25000
Connected to server
Set player ID to 3
Received RPC 'LoadLevel'- mode 2 - sender 127.0.0.1:25000
Relay RPC - name: LoadLevel - mode 2 - sender 127.0.0.1:25000
Disconnected
Sending data
Well, you can see on the client the two logs : &Client&, followed by &Disconnected& which are the two calls to Debug.Log(Network.peerType) on LoadLevel and OnLevelWasLoaded
But the OnDisconnectedFromServer method is never called ...
What am I missing ?
Best Answer
Are you actually disconnected? It seems Unity have some kind of bug that peerType won't show the actual status in OnLevelWasLoaded. However you should make sure that your script isn't destroyed(DontDestroyOnLoad) due to levelload. You have a &Disconnect()& in your OnDisable method so if the script get's destroyed you will cause a disconnect.
To fully understand how the Network in Unity3d is working is with an example.
Go to this tutorial. You'll never get something better explained!
