We moved. We survived. A brief hiatus turned into three months. Let’s roll.
The great day of love is quickly approaching and I can’t let it pass by without offering some punny Valentines. There are ten fruity designs for you to choose from to fit all your Valentine needs. The orange one is perfect for the kid that just discovered knock knock jokes. The peach one is perfect for grandma. And the banana one is perfect for Rachel Zoe. I’ve thought of every possible scenario. Grab the free download at the bottom of this post.

I mentioned on
that we’re leaving Denver. Actually, we’ve officially left and are headed to Washington state. I know your first reaction to that sentence is, “Seattle is great! You’ll love it there!” but we’re actually moving to eastern Washington. Kennewick to be exact. You can send a sympathy note in the mail.
Now don’t get me wrong, there will be good things about this move (family! no commute!) but I’m having a difficult time leaving the community and friends we’ve made in Denver. Like hide under a blanket and sob daily kind of difficult. So as I make this transition, shortly after making the transition of being a mother of two, and while everything is in boxes still waiting on our new house – I’ve decided to allow myself a break and take a brief hiatus from this blog. I do have some holiday posts prepped for Julep (including a How to Holiday list!) and will be sharing those and other updates on , so follow me there if you’re afraid of withdrawals. And I’ll be back in the new year with some fresh content.
Thank you, as always, for reading and being a friend.

Jumping from Halloween to Christmas, that’s how I roll.
I just announced the
I’ll be hosting at
next week (rsvp !) so I thought I’d share the party popper project in action as place cards.
Having one of these poppers at each setting adds some fancy and fun to the table. You can fill them with confetti, money, fortunes, special prizes, or treats. Even if you’re not planning on having guests, make them for your family. They’ll love them so much, it might lead to a better Christmas gift for you.
Along with the poppers, you can make an easy centerpiece (no floral design required) to add some festive to the table. Simply mix and match ornaments, tissue balls, and garlands then cluster them together. I used , , , and .
Get the easy tutorial for the poppers on
from last year. Or if you’re in Denver, Austin, Edina (Minnesota), St. Louis, Chicago, Oakbrook, Indianapolis, Houston, Dallas, Nashville, Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Kansas City, Salt Lake City, Durham, Charlotte, Birmingham (Alabama), New Orleans, or El Paso – you can come and make them at your local west elm store next week. Get the full details and rsvp right . Pull, pop hooray!
UPDATE: Due to unforeseen circumstances, I won’t be able to host the workshop at the Denver store. But the good news is
will be stepping in for me! She’s one of my favorite people with southern charm that will knock your socks off so you’re really lucky.

for Cinco de Mayo this year and I thought it would be fun to turn it Halloween by adding some jack-o-lantern faces onto them. I love how they turned out!
Materials: black and white twine, scissors, stapler, orange tissue paper, chipboard or cardstock, black paper, glue
Step 1: Follow the directions
to create the fans garland part
Step 2: Give them the jagged edges by by cutting into the sides.
Step 3: Cut out the pieces to create a jack-o-lantern face out of black paper.
Step 4: Glue the pieces on with some strong glue. I would recommend something stronger than a glue stick. Place the nose on the center fold and the eyes on the folds nearest it.
Donzo! Happy Halloween!

I couldn’t let the season pass by without putting babies in cutesy homemade costumes. And good news for you non-crafters, both of these costumes only require scissors and a hot glue gun. You know I don’t like to over complicate things.

When I was a kid I was so proud to walk around the neighborhood with the candy bag my mom sewed to look like a jack-o-lantern. So, of course, I wanted to make something similar for my kids to use year after year. That is, until I realized that sewing is not my strong suit. So, I opted for this Halloween bucket hack instead.
Supplies: All you need to make a Halloween candy bucket is a galvanized bucket from a hardware store, a can of spray paint, a little bit of vinyl, and a sealer. That means no real crafting skills necessary.
Process: While waiting for the spray paint to dry on each bucket, I hopped over to the
and picked out a few spooky figures, loaded my vinyl, and pressed GO on my . But if you don’t own a, you could just as easily cut shapes out with scissors or an x-acto knife. Once the shapes were cut, I placed them right onto the bucket and finished with a bit of decoupage to protect the paint and vinyl from Halloween shenanigans.
Time: This was super easy and took less than 30 minutes.
And, do I even have to mention that this didn’t cost much more than the cheesy plastic ones found at Walmart? Step it up people, step it up.

I’m teaming with
to learn some new skills and share them with you.
offers hundreds of online video classes in sewing, cake decorating, photography, art, cooking and many other categories all led by expert instructors.
I have to admit when I heard about , the latest free Craftsy class I tried out, I thought stamping was so basic there was no need to take a class about it. If you have the same thought, take a look at what you’ll learn in this class:
– masking technique
– stamping in foregrounds and backgrounds
– heat embossing and embossed resist stamping
– stamping on vellum and acetate
– fussy-cutting embossed images
I hadn’t even heard of most of these techniques so what I thought would be a basic class actually turned into the one I’ve learned the most from so far. I used these newly acquired skills to create this embossed pillow box and favor bag.
My projects are simple (you got to start somewhere, right?) but Joy Macdonell, the education director for Simplicity and EK Success Brands and instructor of this class, gives expert tips that will have you making intricate cards in no time. Perfect for the upcoming gift giving season!
Want to add these skills to your crafting repertoire? You’re in luck because Craftsy is offering this class to yamf readers for free! Just
and start stamping away. This is the perfect way to try out Craftsy, risk free. Cheers to that.
Craftsy is a yamf sponsor but I would love their classes even if they weren’t. View their entire class catalog .

Our neighborhood goes over-the-top with Halloween decorations, even more so than Christmas. Beck is enthralled with them all so with some prodding from him, I decided to make a quick Halloween garland using the grade school paper loop method. The black and white patterns are more my style, I’m not so much into the gory/scary parts of the holiday.
To make your own, download and print (double sided)
then trim into two inch strips. Loop together and attach each one with a staple.
To hang it up, I used
from their new line of

The patterns would also work great for a traditional triangle garland or gift wrap. Can I say I have Halloween spirit now?

&What's that? Oh, just my secret stash of 1,200 screenshots of computer interfaces from old movies. &
To Baio's unexpected surprise a few people hit the ground running with that tweet, making easily viewable interfaces of the nerd goldmine. The goldmine he casually did the literal rendition of

I have always wondered who the lucky people were behind making those fake screens. I still don't have the answer, but now I can look at over 1,200 screenshots from 47 films of bastardized, amazingness of fake computer screens from (just to name a few) such gems as Alien, Hackers, The Net, Jurassic Park, and the mother of all fake comptuer screens War Games.

I'm that rare bread of social media strategist that gets somewhat meh when it comes to too much hype around social media. I actually do not want to share everything in my life, and can't really tolerate people who do. Because you know sometimes, enough is enough. And although I'm a total people person, it's always on my own terms -- I'm a bit of a satelite, I come and go as I please -- my one party trick is the .
Considering all of these weird anti-social traits (and the fact that
is a fave of mine) you'll understand my delight when I heard about the 3rd party app .
Hell is Other People was designed by using FourSquare's and Google's API. Scott's explanation for creating it?
&This project is partially a satire, partially a commentary on my disdain for “social media”, and partially an exploration of my own difficulties with social anxiety.&
Sadly Hell is Other People only works if your friends are on FourSquare (many of those I would like to avoid I do not follow, for obvious reasons), and actually checking in. Still the concept, and visuals are enough to keep me smiling and rooting for the next version. Perhaps it will expand to Facebook check-ins? We can only hope.
I know most people feel a bit email fatigued...but I've actually found my inbox to be a place of refuge lately to the noise that the Internet can soemtimes feel like. I've started signing up for way more newsletters, and email lists so I can get all of the content and info I'm interested in — in bite size chunks, at my convenience and on my time line.
Perhaps Miranda July is feeling it as well. Her latest project
is something that looks really interesting, and as July normally goes, highlights the mundane and makes it beautiful.
&I’m always trying to get my friends to forward me emails they’ve sent to other people — to their mom, their boyfriend, their agent — the more mundane the better. How they comport themselves in email is so intimate, almost obscene — a glimpse of them from their own point of view. WE THINK ALONE has given me the excuse to read my friends’ emails and the emails of some people I wish I was friends with and for better or worse it’s changed the way I see all of them. I think I really know them now.&

I've never been so excited for boring email in my entire life.
P.S I missed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's email, would you mind forwarding it to me?

If you are looking for a exceptionally witty, and colorful gift for the comicbook lover in your life
is it. In fact, your giftee doesn't even need to be into comics to appreciate Leong's wonderfully, funny graphic book chocked full of charts galore. It's one of the most clever books I've seen recently.
I worked with Leong during my short time at Wired. I never had the opportunity to work directly with him (he served as Director of Digital Design), however any time I ever spoke with him he was delighful and kind. (His desk was also a visual playground with much to look at, and .) Leong gave a sneak peek of the beginnings of Super Graphic during a retreat last spring to the staff of Wired, as he walked us through his visual world it was clear this was going to be a must have for the bookshelf. I've been waiting for his book for a year and a half!
You how ever will only have to wait a few weeks.
Super Graphic has so much great stuff going on, that I would almost prefer you to discover it on your own. It's that good. But for sake of this blog post (and the original reason as to why Chronicle Books sent me it) let's hop to it. As I already mentioned Super Graphic is funny, and it's also incredibly bright both literally and in its copy. Not an easy thing to pull off. Leong knocks it out of the park in many regards. The book itself is quite literally overflowing with data — beautifully and sharply laid out in venn diagrams, maps, graphs, tables, matrix' (!!!), and any chart you can think of from bubble, pie, bar, and so on.
Leong diagrams such topics as the obvious to the most obscure comic facts. From secret identities, to the evolution of Superman's logo, to how to read a comic book (both in English, and the Japanese Manga). What makes the book so delighful and unique is Leong's quirky sense of humor and obvious deep interest in comic books. Along with the above, he creates hilarious and completely unexpected charts. You'll see rap stars influenced by superheros, 70 years of Wonder Woman's legs, Scrooge McDuck's family tree, to ten years of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle pizza combos. You'll even find Leong's own downward trajectory of his faith in humanity mapped out when he sees a Calvin peeing on a car logo sticker of Calvin & Hobbes.
Like I said, funny, fantastic stuff. Super Graphic is available on August 1st. .
Well hello! It's certainly been a while since I posted here. I've been waiting til the time is right — and for me 'to figure it all out,' to be totally honest — before I dropped any thing real on here.
Like most of us, I still haven't figured it all out (does that ever really happen to anyone? If it's happened to you, will you please let me know in the comments?). One thing I have come to realize is that I have missed blogging consistently terribly. TERRIBLY. It literally defined me for 5 years — and it's been hard to shake, try as I might!
So here I am. Posting after being away from this space for over a year. One whole year!
Let me recap. Much has happend in the past few years since I started to let this blog fade. I got burned out, I needed to take a break — and go dark on here. For those of you who do not know me in real life, (or do not r) something major happened to me in 2010 due to this blog: I got a whole new career in tech. All because of this little blog! (The Interent can do wild and amazing things.)
In the past three years I've worked for ,
(Wikipedia's sister site), and . And now, I have my
to define their voice on social media. So things kind of got in the way, and what was once a huge passion — a labor of love as it were — just became a drag. So I took a break. (If you would like, you can
where I was asked to get real about being burned out online. It was cathartic. You should let me know what you think, and if you have had similar issues — because I bet you have.)
This summer, I'm making some really big changes. Really exciting changes. I'm moving out of the Bay Area and back to Boston, and I'm opening
dedicated to all of the jewelry that I love (a dream of mine I've always had. YES! Shout out to my friend Rose, for making me take this leap.)
I'm currently at home starting to plan everything, and I spent the weekend on Cape Cod. To start to get ready I wrote, and wrote, about all of the things that I want to do in the next year. I made a list of my goals and far reaches, all so I can keep myself acountable. One of the things I wrote was to create a new blog so I can post about things I'm doing, people I'm meeting, and just a place to keep it all. Then it hit me. Wait. Why don't I just come back to ML4U? It's my blog. It's my Internet child (bloggers you feel me, right?). Why don't I just start anew? This is where I began. It just makes sense.
So here I am. And who knows if I'll stick around. Who knows what you'll find here! But I hope in the interim you'll join me, and let me inspire you like I have in the past in this new chapter of ML4U.
I'm excited. Are you?
