英语一共有多少单词的问题基本无意义。随便一搜可以看到答案从17万到100万不等。英语专业本科毕业应掌握6,000以上单词，估计相当于美国8年级学生（即国内初三）左右的水平。日常交流基本没问题，可看懂一般性文章。英语专业研究生毕业应掌握8,000以上单词，大约相当于美国10年级学生左右的水平。能够讨论较为复杂的问题，即使不准备也能应付一般性辩论。可以正常阅读《读者文摘》级别的杂志。之后再经过两三年的拓展，词汇量达到12,000左右，大约相当于美国12年级（即国内高三）左右的水平。能够准确细致地表达自己的思想，可讨论具有专业性质的问题。可以正常阅读《经济学人》、《时代》、以及《国家地理》等杂志。p.s. 关于词汇量和相当于美国中学生水平的关系是参考美国The World Book Dictionary所附的词汇测量表的推测值。

1. 理解有错，没有主语从句。这一个S+V+Oo句型。Who 是主语，can have told 是谓语，you 是间接宾语，that puzzles me是直接宾语。另外，须明白是疑问代词是可以主语的，疑问代词在句中作主语时，这个句子的语序与陈述语序是一样的，如：Who wants to ask me questions？2. 即使会摔两次，我还是小心翼翼地走上楼去。3. However用途最广泛, 因此常用作插入语，但不能在句尾，并不直接引出相反的意见。nevertheless的含义为即使做出完全的让步，也没有任何影响，或者说也不是决定因素，如：there was no news；nevertheless，she went on hoping.一点消息也没有，但她仍抱着希望。4. 因为may含有“允许，许可”之意，一般不表示“可能”性。5. 过去分词短语作状语，表示原因，有被动的含义。人们发现他们自己被截留在摇摇欲坠的大楼里，被惊吓了。6. eye用复数，即eyes，指人的身体部分，“眼睛”；用单数，即eye，常指“眼光，眼力”。如果更进一步意化，这句话的深层含义可以是“美丽的山峰景色，使人心旷神怡”。
