It’s a boy! Who’s a girl? Gender identity

When I first saw J a year or two ago, J was in elementary school, and I had no idea if the long-haired child was a boy or a girl. I saw J again recently, now sporting short hair, but until I heard his mom call him by his decidedly boyish name, I wasn’t sure of his sex. After my boys met him a few weeks ago, one of them later spontaneously commented to me that he was confused because J looked like a girl but acted like a boy. Which was J?
It’s confusing when a child veers from any typical developmental path. , anyone? But straying from a typical gender identity development path is especially confusing because it’s not something that’s often . And when it is, it’s either whispered in hushed tones or part of louder, judgmental conversation, “How can she let her boy run around in a dress?”
In college I learned about the many kinds of sex. I mean during c it’s nowhere near as titillating as it sounds. Basically, the categories of sex include chromosomal sex- the whole XX, XY thing, genital sex- classification based on external genitalia, granted Mother Nature throws a few
once in a while, and there is gender-behavioral, cultural and psychological traits generally associated with one sex.
Usually the chromosomal and the cultural dovetail, though I don’t think anyone knows just what little internal switch makes girls go gaga over Disney Princess and pretty pink pony dolls with long pastel-rainbow-colored hair. But I do know that sometimes that same switch goes off in the brain of a young child with an XY chromosome set and a penis, AKA, a boy.
And then what?
NPR’s All Things Considered just aired a thought-provoking and heart-wrenching
on this very topic a short time ago. They interviewed two families with young boys who have gender identity issues or more simply put, want to be, feel they are girls.
Both families have their children in therapy, but one family works with a therapist who encourages the child to express and act how he feels, while the other is “training” their little boy to be a boy. Which means that they’ve taken away everything from his Polly Pockets to his pink crayons.
Knowing how much my boys loved and still love their special toys made this painful to hear. And I believe that the parents think they are doing the right thing with their toughlove approach, but as I listened to the story, I hoped that the parents would listen to it as well. Do they realize how disturbing this all sounds? How withdrawn, secretive and depressed their child is becoming?
As for the other family, it’s not as though they simply dressed their little boy in pink tutus and lived happily ever after. They’ve clearly struggled with their son’s desire to be a girl, but want her to feel comfortable with who she is, something their therapeutic path encourages. And yes, they now refer to him as a her.
To what degree is gender identity flexible or fixed? Where is the line between nature and nuture?
I remember bringing newborn Smartypants home from the hospital thinking, as many naive first-time parents do, about all the things I wanted to show him in life, all the things I wanted to teach him. And like many naive first-time parents, it only took a few days to realize that my kid had a few things to teach me. Within months it was clear that while I had a strong influence over my child, he had his own agenda.
