Microsoft announced a few months ago that they were to introduce IMAP support for anyone with a Windows Live, Hotmail, MSN email account. This tutorial we will configure Apple Mail to use IMAP instead of the default POP. We will be using Mavericks the latest version of the Mac operating system although the settings will be the same for any Mail Client on Windows, Mac, Linux and any mobile client. POP accounts will download the emails but doesn’t necessarily keep in sync with the emails that are on the server unless you specify in the settings. If you access emails several methods, mobile, tablet, browser or Mail client the email might be on your mobile phone but might not appear on your tablet.The advantages of IMAP is that it is synchronised across all email clients including the web. Once you delete a email on your phone it will be removed from the server and will be removed from any other device that has access to it.Let’s Get Started – Open Apple MailThe first and most important step is to turn off your WiFi as Apple Mail will automatically assume that you will want to use the default POP for accessing your email. Disable or delete any Windows Live Accounts that are currently using POP to access your emails.Open up Apple Mail and click on Mail -& Add AccountClick on Add other Mail account Add your details to the pop-up box remember to make sure your WiFi is still switched off A box should appear to say that the account must be manually configured. Add Incoming Mail Server Settings, ensuring that IMAP is selected. imap- Click next and an additional settings box will appear. Enter 993 for the port number and check the SSL box. Leave authentication set to password. Add Outgoing Mail Server Settings smtp- If you get asked to enter a port number enter 25 or 587 ( If 25 is blocked ). Turn your WiFi back on and try sending yourself a test message. If you are having any problems sending a test message then go to Mail -& PreferencesNavigate to your email address and click on Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) Click on Edit SMTP Server ListEnsure that the following is input ConclusionHopefully by now you should be able to send and receive emails through your Windows Live account.

Microsoft finally implemented IMAP interface on a Hotmail (, , live.ca, etc.). Finally, they have caught up to the 21st
century and implemented a mail system which is designed for a world where people have multiple devices.
They steadfastly refuse to implement CALDAV or CARDDAV, so no hope of syncing calenders or contacts though, even though, as a recent survey for
(a Lower Mainland on-site tech support company) showed, 58% of respondents called accessing their email and contacts from anywhere absolutely critical (30% said they &#8220;cannot live without it&#8221;).
If you have a Mac, you know that that settings up mail accounts is simple, easy and automatic, right? Well&#8230; not so fast.
Click the &#8220;+&#8221; to create a new account
The first thing you do is create a new email account in Mac Mail by clicking on the plus sign.
Trying to add a Hotmail account normally
The normal method would be to simply enter the Hotmail address (, etc.) and expect that the Mac will capture the settings for you. Apple thinks that Hotmail does not support IMAP so it sets the POP settings for you.
Mail sets the POP settings &#8211; FAIL!
To set the IMAP settings for Hotmail on the Mac, you must first make it think you are setting up a different kind of account that it doesn&#8217;t know the settings for.
Create an account that doesn&#8217;t exist on a domain that doesn&#8217;t exist.
First you create a garbage account. You will change this to the Hotmail account later after you have set-up IMAP.
Set-up the account as IMAP and enter the Hotmail IMAP servers.
Now we manually create it as IMAP with the server name as imap- and a user name of the ,
address. I am not sure if this will work for a live.ca or other address.
Wait while Mail checks for the best available port and security
Rather than letting you set-up the port and security manually, mail does it for you. Refill your coffee.
The outgoing (SMTP) server for your Hotmail account must be smtp- to allow mail to be sent and validated as coming from a real Hotmail account. Using this port ensures that mail you send from your Mac (or PC) will end up in the &#8220;Sent&#8221; folder on all connected devices. Make sure that the check-box &#8220;Use only this server&#8221; is checked.

Click the hotmail account to edit it.
Click on the Hotmail IMAP account to edit the settings.
Change the email address to your actual Hotmail address
Now we are ready to change the email address to the ,
Close and save the settings.
Close the dialog box and choose &#8220;Save&#8221; when prompted.
Take the account online.
From the Mail menu, select Mailbox -& Take All Accounts Online then wait a minute or more depending on the number of folders you have in your hotmail account.

Finally! All Hotmail folders , read status, flags, etc. are in sync between your iPhone, iPad, Mac, PC, Android Tablet and the web.
