1 The Sextant is a publication produced by the International Office of the FHNW School of Business. When the referendum in Switzerland in April delivered a miniscule majority to stall bilateral EU agreements, many students here were shocked by the repercussion this had on ERASMUS. Thousands joined protests and demonstrations on the streets of Zurich and Bern. The Swiss government meanwhile has assured continuation of ERASMUS by fully funding the programme: grants for incoming and outgoing students and financing for other affiliated activities are guaranteed for the next year. Of the annual 0 School of Business exchange students (in and out), about half fall within ERASMUS. We asked students why. Klimentina Tanaskoska: &the most multi-cultural continent& My main motivation for staying in Europe was because I had spent some time in Australia and the United States before and reckoned that our neighboring countries have a lot to offer as well. Spending my semester abroad in France meant that I could improve my French, which is a vital asset here in Switzerland. Going to Nice meant that I could do this in a perfect geographical environment. The educational environment was also excellent: I was amazed to see that the school and the exchange students created a warm feeling of togetherness like I had never experienced before at any educational institution. Tina, BSc International Management, year, went to IPAG in Nice, France (SS)
2 Anna Rieder: &benefitted from academic writing method& Being a huge fan of England, I greatly appreciated the opportunity to go there for one semester. I love the country, the people and especially the English humor. I met a lot of English students in my courses and we had many group works, so there was a good amount of interaction between international and local students. Unlike here at the FHNW, we did not have final exams. Instead we had to write a paper of about 3000 words for each course. At the time I did not enjoy it that much, but now that I have to write an academic research paper I realize that I greatly benefitted from that teaching method. Anna, BSc International Management, spent one semester at the Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, UK (TK) Victor Malm and Tobias Bjurhall: &ERASMUS impact on future is incredible& Victor: A student from our university who had spent his semester abroad here held a presentation about his time at the FHNW. This left such an excellent impression on Tobias, myself and many of the other local students that Tobias and I decided to apply for the two slots that were available. But competition was fierce: a lot of other Swedish students were very interested in coming to Switzerland as well. Tobias: I love the fact that you can really feel the motivation of the Swiss students. They are really ambitious and structured. And everyone wants to participate, which makes working in groups very pleasant. Victor: Yes, everything is very structured which allows for a great learning environment. The teachers here have a lot of work experience, which is one of the great benefits of studying at a Fachhochschule. Tobias: So you get the benefit of living in a different culture, but enjoying the little things that remind you of back home: like your clean and modern grocery stores for example! Victor: The benefit that an ERASMUS exchange semester has on your future is incredible. It does not always have to be Asia or South America. Many people think they have to go that far to experience something different - which is absolutely not true! In my opinion, you can see even more and dig deeper into a culture that is closer to your own. Tobias: Even within Europe there are so many different cultures and getting to know even just some of them is an experience that one should value very highly. We are very inspired by how people work here and how organized they are. This is something we will therefore try to apply when we go back home. And that works the other way around as well for people who have spent time outside Switzerland. So I think it is very important for people to experience something different and take the best aspects back by adding it to their repertoire. Victor and Tobias are exchange students in Olten from the University of Boras in Sweden. SS Lea Ferrante: &made me more open-minded& Antwerpen is a very diverse city with a lot of culture and a big social community. The cultural similarities to Switzerland made me feel at home right away. The cultural differences became more evident in the class, which consisted of international students only. Especially when we had group works, I had to learn how to deal with different mindsets and attitudes. This experience definitely increased my awareness of cultural differences and made me more open-minded. Therefore, it was an ideal preparation for my professional future in an international working environment. Lea, BSc International Management spent her exchange semester at the Karel de Grote-Hogeschool in Antwerpen, Belgium. (TK) J&remy Demarne: &impact on career immense& My main motivation for coming to Switzerland was the field of finance, as I want to work in this field in the future. Switzerland of course has a great reputation in the world of finance and the international coordinators at my university recommended I apply for an allocation here at the FHNW. This was a great decision, as I really enjoy studying finance here and the positive impact these two semesters will have on my future career are immense. In fact, Switzerland is such a great place to study finance that I have applied for master s programmes in universities in the French speaking part of Switzerland (in Geneva, Lausanne and Neuch&tel). Jeremy, from the Paris Descartes University is spending two semesters here at the FHNW (SS) Nathalie Deschamps: &combination of economics and Spanish extremely valuable& I chose to go to the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid because it s the best university for Economics and I wanted to learn Spanish. This combination of economics and Spanish is extremely valuable in today s world and will continue to grow more important. Add to this the local mentality, lifestyle and of course the cuisine and you have the perfectly fascinating destination for your semester abroad. Nathalie, BSc International Management spent her semester abroad at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. (SS) PR for Switzerland: Coventry University is very international. Since I am considering working abroad as an expat, it was incredibly interesting for me to learn about cultural differences that will meet me on the way to my career. It was my intention to get rid of wrong assumptions about the English culture, as well as to leave a good impression about my home country, Switzerland. Rebecca Allen, BSc International Management spent one semester at Coventry University, UK. TK Group Work: I am half Luxembourgish and half Belgian, which means that now that I am in Switzerland, I am living closer to my two countries of origin. Despite the closeness of Austria and Switzerland, I have encountered a few cultural differences, especially in the way of working together in groups. The most rewarding thing about being here is that I have found a new possible home country. I have already considered living in Luxembourg or Belgium, but when I came to Zurich for the first time, I already felt at home. Meike Holzner, University of Applied Sciences BFI Vienna, is in Olten on a semester abroad. TK Consolidating skills: I had always wanted to spend a longer period of time in an English-speaking country so being accepted at the Institute of Technology in Blanchardstown finally made this dream come true. It s a great place to study, and the fact that they let exchange students join their different societies and clubs made my stay even more pleasant and rewarding. So not only did I get to stay in an English-speaking country, I also got to improve my photography-skills by joining the photography club. Dario Mastrogiovanni, BSc IM student spent his semester abroad at the Institute of Technology in Blanchardstown, Dublin. SS Wine Research: My motivation to go to France was my love for the language, as well as the culture. The people in France know how to enjoy their lives, without judging others. This way of living taught me to be freer and to have the courage to be myself. During my semester abroad, I met a lot of people from the wine business, which made for interesting conversations and helped me quite a bit with finding expert information for my academic research paper. I am even considering opening a wine bar one day. Xi Chen, BSc International Management, studied at ECE in Bordeaux, France. TK All Photos by Kierin Mulholland Focus Interview: Prof Dr Nathalie Amstutz: Fascinating and complex tri-national research project &Gender Cage& to investigate Persistence Gender Inequality Prof Dr Nathalie Amstutz with Prof. Dr. Edeltraud Hanappi-Egger from Vienna. DACH-projects are quite a special form of research projects in Europe. The name refers to the participating countries Germany (D), Austria (A) and Switzerland (CH). Achieving the support, funding, cooperation and colleagues from universities and national research foundations in three different countries is a challenge. Dr Nathalie Amstutz, professor at the Institute of Human Resource Management, was understandably very happy when she learned last summer that two years of preparing the project proposal had paid off. The idea of this three country research is that the national research foundations pay for their respective research team which supports the co-operation between those countries enormously. For the next two years, Nathalie Amstutz and her colleague Hanna Voehringer will now be working together with the University of Economics in Vienna, the Marburg University in Germany and the Vlerinck Business School, Leuwen on a topic called Gender Cage. Basically they want to find out what possible reasons there are for the persistence of gender inequality in organisations. Following this focus on gender, the three research teams want to investigate into the role of the organisations. So what role do the dynamics of an institution concerning gender roles play? How does the respective industry affect that? How do organisations build up a gender culture? - To illustrate that you may imagine that a Marc Zuckerberg founds Facebook in a university environment for techies. The company grows and one day he needs to find new staff. He may then tend to use his old college network which is highly dominated by males. This may then lead to the installation of a gendered culture. This is an exciting field to investigate, says Nathalie Amstutz. Until now the research team has been busy with literature studies and theoretical work. Now we are planning to do interviews, group discussions and observations with several organisations. For this, we need to select and convince companies to work with us. The nature of those DACH projects requires the participation of companies who are doing business in all of the three countries which quite limits the co-operation opportunities. Nathalie Amstutz says when finding the right companies, it will be great to have the opportunity to find out similarities and differences among the three local representations of the same company in all three countries. The project is open for companies from nearly all sectors including IT, manufacturing, services, consultancies and even nonprofit organisations. The investigation with the companies will approach new aspects, e.g. the role of the institutionalizing processes and industry, Nathalie Amstutz stresses. It will be driven by the question how the companies deal with the equality expectations. The focus here is on the structure And the project investigates the relationship of decision making, formal activities and informal practices. Companies need to make sure that they are members of the right networks. Those networks expect the organisation to be at the state of the art and innovative. So the research teams will look at those patterns and how the companies deal with them in order to become equality oriented organisations within a professional setting. So the project is also about possibilities of cultural change in organizations in within specific professional settings. The Swiss, the Austrian and the German research teams are all currently looking for suitable companies. As an incentive, companies will receive detailed feedback and reflections on their organisational dynamics when dealing with changes, as all those gender issues are linked with organisational or cultural change. Also the project will close with workshops in 0 offered to the companies and discussions on ways of dealing with these patterns, reflect on these and support on what to consider when planning change processes. As an example of the quandary, Nathalie Amstutz explains that one of the potential partners in this project is interested because they had good results regarding gender equality (women in leadership positions) about 0 years ago. Now they observe a backlash. Where beforehand they recruited more women and had more acceptance of women in leadership roles, they now observe women have left the company and leadership positions and replacing them was difficult. Reasons may be multiple, but they have the feeling that it has something to do with gender related questions and they want to understand why this happens, Nathalie Amstutz reports. Touching new ground with research, especially in such a triple country co-operation settings is seldom. However, investigating something new and at the same time seeing that there are organisations which are explicitly interested in such complex questions, has resulted in a high motivation within the whole team. The involved researchers want to feed their first findings already into a conference next year and open the public discussion on the issues. This will even happen well before the project is officially concluded in 0. The research team also wants to invite more companies to participate in this project. Prof Dr J&rg Schneider taught Summer School students last year about Tourism. This year the Basel summer school will focus on Innovation and Competitiveness. A second summer school is on offer this year to meet demand from both domestic and international students for these unique and intense opportunities to gain extra credits in an international environment. The two-week summer school in Basel, already well established, is complemented by a new one-week programme on Fashion and Luxury Management to be held in Lugano. Both programmes offer combinations of lessons and company visits together with opportunities to network among the multi-national participants and explore local culture. The short duration enables especially those students who have not gone on semesters abroad to gain international contacts and insights. The new summer school, an initiative by the Scuola universita professionale della Svizzera Italiana (SUPSI) and partnered by the FHNW, focuses on sustainability in the fashion and luxury industry. It will be held in Lugano, often known as the Fashion Valley, will be held from July and carries 3 ECTS. For further information go to

Goodbye S Hello Tanja Samy Shalaby, who has been contributing to The Sextant for years, is set to graduate in September and then embark on the next life phase. Apart from delivering the regular Partner Profiles and Who s Where items, his natural talent led to writing several longer items which were interesting and professional. We re sorry to lose him but clearly wish him much success. Tanja K&hni, currently in the second year of her BSc in Business Administration (International Management) steps up to replace him. She s well integrated into student life as she heads the ESN (Erasmus Student Network) team and therefore has many contacts with campus activities and student developments. Welcome on board, Tanja. Last year s EMFB participants at a class in Switzerland with Prof. Roland H&nni Because of the heterogeneity of backgrounds and the different periods of writing, we have set up a distance learning course to support students in Vietnam writing their Master thesis. The students come from diverse business backgrounds and so the quality and the needs are very different. Prof. Dr. Thomas Hanne (quoted above) collaborated with head of the Learning Lab Sebastian Linxen and Prof. Dr. Oliver Bendel to establish a seven part course specifically tailored to the 79 (03/) students in Ho Chi Minh City who participate in the Executive Master in Finance and Banking (in collaboration with the HCMC Banking University). We opted for a fairly simple and neutral format to meet the different technical requirements of our target groups explains Sebastian Linxen who worked on the technicalities of the platform. The students already face language challenges so we decided to have 0 minute units where the slides are commented on, explained and highlighted by Prof Dr Hanne. It s on the Moodle platform so students can study at their own pace. At this stage we re not filming the delivery of the lecture as that might be too complex. We ll see how this works and evaluate it before developing the course further. The first introductory lesson of the course is delivered in person when the cohorts come to Switzerland in August for an obligatory 3-week on-site study module. The further installments (on the research process, ethics in research, finding and using literature, references, writing a research paper and evaluation criteria) can then be called up as self-study and as needed. I was interested to see how the Vietnamese would react to the material in the face to face lesson, - but actually it s not very different to what I ve experienced with classes here. So this was reassuring when compiling the podcasts, to know that my normal style worked for them too, Thomas Hanne mentions. I did notice that not many make use of the supporting Skype sessions for Q & A or
but otherwise this approach seems very international and very transferable. Sebastian Linxen also enjoyed the challenge of the experience, both the new technicalities and the different target group. The only really different experience I made was that during my input in the session here, I suddenly saw that quite a few students had lifted their mobile phones and were actually filming and recording me. I realized they wanted this as support in their learning, but it was unusual and a little bit confusing. The Sextant _

Profits will go to the Swiss Support Foundation charity (co-founded by an IM Alumnus) which offers health care insurance to children in the Philippines as well as finance the Graduation Prize awarded annually by the IM Alumni. One highlight, among many, was the bidding for Boston Consulting Group Managing Director Joachim Stephan who offered to take the winning bid to any European city for lunch and to mentor on that day. When, during the dizzy bidding session, Joachim Stephan then offered to take two people on the trip, fierce competition ensued and the winning bid was CHF 000. Nine other executives were also auctioned mostly offering participants (students and alumni from both the BSc and MSc in International Management) a chance to increase networks, gain insight into professional fields, to shadow and accompany an executive for half a day. Alan Frei, venture builder, entrepreneurial consultant was the much appreciated guest speaker - talking and riffing on some of the triggers (usually either love or problems) and qualities required to set up your own business. The everpopular speed-networking concluded the event. The IM Alumni Association is a NPO which organizes an annual event to enable socializing, networking but also promotes paying back and paying forward by supporting charities set up by alumni and awarding a graduation prize to whichever student is voted the greatest contributor to the IM community (peer vote). 6 0 Who s Where? Arianna Pierfranceschi (Photo: Kierin Mulholland) Volleyball has always been one of my passions and I have played in various teams over the last few years. When I started the Business Information Systems double degree at the University of Camerino, Italy, I joined a team as well. When I came to Switzerland in September 0, I was very lucky that my professor and coordinator between the two universities, Knut Hinkelmann, also coaches a 3rd league volleyball team in Kappel. He asked me to join the team, and I train with them every Monday and Wednesday since then. Being able to pursue my hobby here in Switzerland is a great experience, even though there are a few new challenges compared to playing in Italy. The language of instruction is Swiss German, and the girls also often speak in their native language. So I always need someone to translate for me and to tell me what we are supposed to do. But the girls are always very nice and helpful. The language was also a big challenge in the classroom, especially at the beginning. On top of that, I had to take some additional classes from the Bachelor of Business Information Systems, since I came from a business faculty. This is why it took me a little longer to complete all my courses. I didn t mind, because I like living and studying here and I was getting more and more integrated. One year ago, I also started to work here as a student assistant, since life here is quite expensive. At the beginning, I had the scholarship of the Erasmus and from the double degree, but afterwards it was quite difficult to make ends meet. My task is mainly to handle the social media concerning the Master in BIS. As I will graduate in summer, I am not quite sure yet what the future will bring. But if I have the opportunity to stay in Switzerland, I will definitely take it. And if I end up staying in the Olten area, I will certainly continue to play volleyball for my team. TK Florian Estoppey D&borah Ab&cassis (Photo: Alex Kaeslin) My desire to relocate to Asia for a longer period developed during the exchange semester that I spent in Hong Kong. After my semester abroad, I decided to take months off and travel the Asian continent with my wife we visited China, Vietnam Laos and Thailand, all ideal destinations for passionate climbers like us. After returning back to Switzerland my wife and I decided that we would love to go back to Asia for a longer period. We came to the conclusion that Singapore would be an easier destination for a relocation than Hong Kong, as Singapore is supposed to be more family friendly (my wife and I have two daughters: one two years old and one six months old), and the chances for my wife to find English-speaking employment as a nurse are higher. I have been working for PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) since 007 on a part time basis besides my studies at the FHNW. After I graduated from the FHNW s International Management programme in the summer of 0 I changed teams and started working full time. I now work for PwC s SOBT (Strategy and Operations and Business Technology) consulting division. PwC in Singapore I started the BSc International Business Management (IBM) programme in the summer of 0 and plan to graduate this summer. We IBM students rotate each semester, from the DHBW (Duale Hochschule Baden W&rttemberg) in L&rrach to the UHA (Universit& de Haute Alsace) in Colmar and then to the FHNW in Basel, which is where I am currently studying. This is my second semester here in B I have spent two semesters already in both L&rrach and Colmar. Originally I m from the Alsace region in France. As I live in St. Louis, I commute to the FHNW and back. It only takes me about ten minutes with public transport (either by train or by tram), but this experience of crossing the French-Swiss border every day is truly impressive. During my semesters in Colmar and L&rrach I moved into apartments closer to the university. Naturally, the structure of the classes and the student-teacher relationships differ from university to university and especially from country to country. We work a lot in groups here in Basel and receive has a different internal organization to PwC in Switzerland, but in principle I will be doing the same, or at least a similar job. I will even be able to transfer one of my projects to SG. So hopefully I will have a very smooth transition. The organizational workload that my wife and I are confronted with for planning our relocation to Singapore is immense - I must admit that we had greatly underestimated it. Deregistering from the municipality and dealing with insurance issues, selling my car, cancelling contracts (mobile phone, internet) takes a lot of time and nerves. Fortunately I have saved some vacation days and I will have all of June off in order to relocate with my family, find an apartment and get settled before I start working on July st. The contract for my international assignment is limited to two years with the option to extend for another year. Upon my return, I will have a guaranteed job at PwC Switzerland in my current team. We are all looking forward to the great adventure ahead of us! SS more assignments, and the fact that the three nations (DE, CH and FR) are equally represented by a third in each class (there are 30 students in each of the two IBM classes) makes these tasks very interesting. The exchange students that join us when we are in Basel add nicely to the mix. I find the IBM programme extremely rewarding, especially in terms of the language skills that students can develop. We usually speak German amongst each other in class or when we meet in our spare time, which has been a great help for me in learning the language. Being fluent in French, German and English has been a great aid in looking for a place to spend my obligatory six-month internship before graduating. I was lucky enough to be accepted by the marketing department of Europa-Park, a German amusement park that, to many, brings back childhood memories. There will be no more cross-border commuting for me though, as they have arranged an apartment in Rust for me. As researchers it is important to us to share our thoughts and research ideas and results with our scientific community, meaning people who do research in the same field. Such exchange mostly takes place at conferences. This one was organised by the European Group for Organisation Studies. They call the conference LAEMOS what stands for Latin American and European Meeting on Organization Studies and takes place every second year. After applying with a proposal, I was accepted and allowed to present a paper at the conference on our research project and get the chance to discuss it with several international scientists. As the conference last for days, we had a busy schedule with roundtables, presentations, discussions, keynotes and evening receptions. The conference itself was a great event and the exchange with the We just finished one of those great applied research projects where we helped a Swiss company creating a new service and bringing it to the German market. We researched a special new service from a Swiss tool producer which is basically a cloud solution. The Swiss company puts a little warehouse with its products into the customer s production site. If the customer needs tools, they can simply scan it and take it from the warehouse. Then it belongs to the customer. The accounting for this is done automatically as soon as the tool is scanned. Therefore the customer has no waiting time for new tools, does not need an own costly warehouse for tools and has less work with the buying process. We found out that this service saves the customers several ten thousand Euros per year. When the Swiss franc became stronger, the company decided that they cannot afford to offer this service free of charge any more. They started to re-launch it. For this we did a customer survey where we explicitly looked for what the German customers really want and how much they are My field is sustainability marketing. Therefore I always want to learn more about how other universities deal with this topic in their study programmes, but also in research. While searching for universities in Europe which follow a more holistic approach to sustainability, I found the Primorska University in Koper. The Primorska University is the only university in Eastern Europe that is trying to fully integrate sustainability into their organisation. All their teaching in business studies is oriented towards that. They are very consistent with it and want to make this their brand. My idea was to visit this university, to meet the local staff and learn from them. I also wanted to find out if there is an opportunity for cooperation in research. This visit provided me with the chance to talk to the people in Koper who are working in exactly my field - in marketing and research. We had many interesting conversations and finally decided that we could work together on future research projects. other researchers was very open, constructive and I was even invited to write an article for a South American journal. However, the conference was quite different to what I have experienced before. We had frequent power blackouts, the food was far away from what I had expected at a Caribbean hotel and yes, there was a pool and a live band right next to the conference rooms. It was also funny, as we had pretty much no internet access, neither in the hotel, nor at the conference itself. Enjoying a drink at the pool while discussing research papers was an unusual but great experience. This atmosphere allowed comfortable small talk as well as in-depth discussions with the other 0 participants. So I also learned by chance that researchers from Latin America use quite different methods and approaches when they conduct research in our field. It was quite valuable to get to know so many people during such a short time. This especially as we as a research team are organising a conference in England later on this year, where I will see most of the people again who I met here at this conference in Habana. MS willing to pay for it. Based on that, the software was modified. We accompanied the company not only during the survey process, but also through the implementation on the market. We even did all the field force training and the product instructions with the field staff in Germany, which was a great experience. Being involved in those trainings was also interesting regarding some unexpected intercultural issues. As you may know, Swiss German is not exactly the same as High German. In addition, sales people tend to speak rather fast and are very extroverted. So this is quite the opposite of the Swiss culture where we tend to speak rather slowly, often in dialect and not very extroverted. Overall, the great thing about this project was working together with a company from the first to the very last phase. When you have been involved in creating a service and finally you are at a fair where this service is sold to customers, this gives you a great feeling. And it goes further. Now the company wants to implement that service also in Switzerland, then in Italy, then France and then overseas. MS Another thing that I learned in Koper is that they are not yet focusing on helping students to build their own business during or after their studies. This is done rather well here in Switzerland and at the FHNW. So we even found a second area for potential future cooperation. Besides that I also took the opportunity to attend some lectures. However, I have to say that lectures in Koper and here at FHNW are not very different, neither is the entire organisation of the university. It was actually quite astonishing how few differences I saw, also in the daily work of the professors. What impressed me was the character of the city. Koper is directly next to the sea and they have some of those old art nouveau coffee places. It was great relocating meetings away from the university site to one of those cafes next to the cathedral. I am very much looking forward to working together with those colleagues in Koper within a research project in the nearby future. MS The Sextant _
7 A Day in the Life of Clarissa Vale Durut Clarissa Vale Durut, an alumna of the MSc in International Management and now Investment Advisor in Wealth Management Global Emerging Markets (GEM) at the UBS has just returned this month from visiting her family in Belo Horizonte, capital of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais and location of one of the stadia for the forthcoming FIFA World Cup*. She talks about the many contrasts: the passion for the game and the shame of unfinished infrastructure, the mixed potential blessing of winning, and the juxtaposition of witnessing unsustainable investments while working with entrepreneurs who want to change things. I have a saying that I live by: you need to be like water. That means that when I m in Switzerland I adapt and go with the flow here: well organised but very busy, eating healthily, working intensely with clients, dressing in business clothes. But when I m in Brazil - then of course I join the flow there and try to reconnect and adapt. Amazingly, I still get up at six in the morning in Brazil because I want to squeeze as much as possible into each day and spend as much time with my family and friends as I can - even if it means I get very little sleep. Each day is different but there s no plan or organisation. I spend time with family, sit in the sun as much as I can and eat lots of Brazilian food. My parents had to work very hard and fight to enable me to get this amazing education and opportunity. Coming to Switzerland in 007 was the biggest challenge of my life I had to quit my job to accept an UBS traineeship not knowing how long it would last and didn t know anyone here, was worried about the language. Yet here I am. At one stage I opted to do the Master in International Management and the bank fully supported me. I was especially interested in learning about sustainability. It was hard work but lead to my promotion to Associate Director at the Brazil High Net Worth Individuals (HNWI) team in Zurich. Because I m the oldest, my father took me to the matches of Clube Atl&tico Mineiro, - our very own and very successful club in Belo Horizonte - from about the age of 8. We lived close to the stadium so we d go regularly. I loved this: there is just so much passion in football and the cheering, the energy, the atmosphere, the excitement cannot be put into words. Everything becomes very intense. I m normally quite a reserved and polite person - but when I m at a match - well, you wouldn t recognise me. Later, at high school, I played football for my school team. So you can say I m passionate about the game. Some of the World Cup matches will be played in the new stadium in Belo Horizonte*. But I m afraid that at the moment the people there are not excited - the overwhelming impression I had is that they are full of shame and anger. We are usually a very proud race but right now the shame is stronger than the excitement. We are ashamed of what we are offering to the world, we are ashamed of our politicians, we are ashamed of the infrastructure. People are frustrated and negative. All the resources and years that we had to prepare for this and all the money invested and we are not ready. It s not the stadia they are ready- but it s the hospitals and the roads and the airports. That is very sad because soccer is in our hearts and our passion. People are very critical of the World Cup. Last year there was a lot of public protest about the amount of money that was given and we don t see where it went. It should have been invested in our health care and in our housing. I m not sure either whether what has been constructed is sustainable. There is a lot of nepotism and corruption and so often it s not the best people or places that are selected, places that supply a long-term advantage. I think the biggest mistake is to think that Brazil is a developed country we had some strong years but now we have a low growth rate, flat salaries, poor infrastructure and high inflation. We are still in development and it takes time. I think that those entrepreneurs and Brazilians I work with see reality and see it is a long process. We are still building and it is my hope that there will be renewal. I believe education is the foundation to achieve this. In Belo Horizonte, people are however getting ready. I talked to various taxi-drivers and many of them have been trying to learn some English in preparation for the visitors. They ve also developed an app so that tourists can call using this and the driver can see where they are and pick them up. So taxi drivers and the stadium and accommodation is ready. But everywhere else is just a building site. Perhaps though, once everything starts, people will start getting excited and start to join in the spirit of the championships. Brazil could win - I don t know, but the team is pretty good. I think it depends on the first few games that will be a thermometer. I watched an interview with the coach on television and he said Brazil had only one option to win. We are very emotional and as soon as we see the yellow shirts it will be amazing. There was a lot of debate in the papers though that it will be a mixed blessing if Brazil does win the cup. This would probably mean that the current president Dilma Rousseff would automatically get re-elected this autumn - she can ride the wave of that success. So what I heard a lot at the moment was people saying they hoped we would lose. While Brazilians get a holiday each time the national team plays, I will be working back in Zurich. But we have a group of Brazilian friends and colleagues and we have already planned a really big party and I know that once I see the yellow shirts I will be shouting and excited. It will be amazing.
