Kamakura is located approximately an hour south of Tokyo near the coast of Sagami Bay. The town has given its name to a historical period, from , when the Japanese government withdrew from Kamakura. Today it is a quiet town, without the agitation found in the big cities and is rhythm by the many tourists who visit and the hush of the many surrounding Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines.
Kamakura is the hometown of architect Yoshihiro Takishita, who graduated from Tokyo University. He found his niche in architecture, which grew out of his fascination for the traditional Japanese building tradition. As he puts it, he breathes new life into old houses. He specializes in renovating, modernizing and maintaining gassho zukuri minka - the traditional Japanese farmhouse.
Before the renovation work begins, the structure is taken apart and transported to Takishitas workshop in the mountain area of Takayama. Here the damaged parts of the wooden structure is repaired, and then stored in its separate elements. When a new owner and the right emplacement for the house are found, it will be rebuilt and modernized with all the needs of the contemporary habitants. One of the traditional houses biggest drawbacks is that it gets cold in the winter months, so the structure must be thoroughly sealed and insulated. The comfort level of the house improves highly when a new roof and floor heating are installed. However, despite the contemporary changes, the house's scent, mood and materials remain the same and you will be able to walk through the house and experience the same spatial qualities which were found in the house when it was built.
Once the house is finished, it has gone from being a deteriorating farmhouse to an excellent piece of craftsmanship. The house that was on the verge of becoming a piece of history is now habitable again. I cannot do anything but fall in love with these houses, the smell of the wood, the feel of tatami and the way the rooms are lit. This is an alternative way to get these houses to sustain outside museums, where people can live once again, and give a place for old craft to live on.
