从宗教的视角再论《人鼠之间》的主题

内容提要：安妮?洛夫蒂斯（Anne Loftis）、伊恩?乌斯比（Ian Ousby）和约翰?提摩曼（John H. Timmerman）等中外文学评论家在他们的论著中都分别对约翰?斯坦贝克的《人鼠之间》的主题进行多层面的分析，那就是孤独、友谊以及人们的美国梦的幻灭等。 本文从宗教视角重新解读《人鼠之间》，提出此故事同样还具有深刻的宗教寓意。此小说正是“圣经故事”“该隐杀弟”中“该隐诅咒”的现代翻版。当小说中的人物面临是友谊相伴，还是孤独一生的选择时，这也正是该隐所处的困境。

《人鼠之间》是美国二十世纪小说家，诺贝尔文学奖获得者约翰?斯坦贝克 John Steinbeck 写于三十年代的成名作。同样，也是美国文学史上一部重要小说。小说于1937年出版，在此之前，斯坦贝克写了《天国牧场》（The Pastures of Heaven, 1932）和《致一位未知的神》（To a God Unknown, 1933）等。这几本书出版后都未能引起轰动，那时的斯坦贝克在公众中默默无闻。直到1937年，他写了《人鼠之间》才引起了公众的注意。正如英国评论家伊恩?乌斯比在他的《五十部美国小说》中写道:《人鼠之间》“尽管篇幅不长，但却不是一部无足轻重的作品。自它在1937年出版以来，它就奠定了自己作为二流经典作品的地位。实际上，对于某些读者来说，它似乎更令人满意，并胜过斯坦贝克一些更为雄心勃勃但缺陷也更多的作品，像《愤怒的葡萄》和《烦恼的冬天》这样的小说。”① 虽说对于它胜过《愤怒的葡萄》这种观点笔者无法苟同（因为《愤怒的葡萄》是记录美国三十年代大
