Internet use appears to cause a drop in psychological
health, according to a research at Carnegie Mellon University.
Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the
Internet experienced more depression(沮丧) and
loneliness than those who used Internet less frequently, the two-year study
showed. And it wasn’t that people who were already feeling bad spent more time
on the Internet, but that using the Net actually appeared to cause the bad
feeling.
Researchers are puzzled by the results, which were
completely the opposite to their experiences. They expected that the Net would
prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose
the information and to communicate with others.
The fact that Internet use reduces time available for
family and friends may explain the drop in well-being, researchers supposed.
Faceless, bodiless “virtual” communication may be less psychologically
satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationships formed through it
may be shallower. Another possibility is that knowing the wider world via the Net
makes users less satisfied with their lives.
“But it’s important to remember this is not about the
it’s about how it is used,” says psychologist Christine Riley of
Intel, one of the study founders. “It really points to the need for considering
social factors in terms of how you design applications(应用) and services for technology.”

When I was a baby, I entertained you and made
you laugh. Whenever I was “bad”, you'd shake your finger at me and ask, “How
could you?”--but then you'd give up, and roll me over for a belly scratch and I
believed that life could not be any more perfect.
My housetraining was a long process, because you
were terribly busy, but we worked on that together. We went for long walks,
runs in the park and car rides. We stopped for ice cream. I took long naps in
the sun waiting for you to come home at the end of the day.
Gradually, you began spending more time at work
and on your career, and more time searching for a human mate. Eventually, you
fell in love. She, now your wife, is not a dog person, but I still welcomed her
into our home. I was happy because you were happy. Then the human babies came
along and I shared your excitement, I was fascinated by their pinkness, how
they smelled, and I wanted to mother them too. Your wife was afraid I would
bite them. But nevertheless, as they began to grow, I became their friend.
Now, you have a new job in another city and you
and they will be moving to an apartment that does not allow pets. You've made
the right decision for your “family”, but there was a time when I was your only
family.
I was excited about the car ride until we
arrived at the dog pound. It smelled of dogs and cats, of fear, of
hopelessness. You filled out the paperwork and said, “I know you will find a
good home for her.” They shrugged and gave you a pained look. The children were
in tears as they waved me goodbye. And “How could you?” were the only three
words that swept over my mind.
Is it better to live with hope or without hope?
At first, whenever anyone passed my pen (围栏), I rushed to the
front, hoping it was you, that you had changed your mind and that this was all
a bad dream.
My beloved master, I will think of you and wait
for you forever. I hope you receive more faithfulness from your family than you
showed to me.

the whole day with strong winds there, the town deserved a visit.

AThe choice to adopt and hold gratefulness is the one that is different from those who suffer misfortune and those who enjoy a full life.My mother died when I was 24. It was a very difficult time in my life — everything seemed to fall apart. I lost my job, and then my utilities were turned off. I had to take cold showers for six months. A neighbor who knew about my situation came to my house and made me an offer. I took care of her children as a job, and I no longer went hungry. I was surprised that someone would trust me — a young woman with her children. And it was with the very confidence that before long I began taking care of other people’s children, too. I have since moved 300 miles from Boise, Idaho. For more than 23 years I have made every effort to reach out to all the kind-hearted people who helped me when I was down and out. Without their trust, I don’t know what I would have done. I am very involved in my community and volunteer at the local food bank, and I help out whenever I can. I’d like to owe what I am to whoever has offered me generosity. If you are grateful for what you already have, the world will work together to give you more to be grateful for. Otherwise, the world will give you more to complain about. Moreover, the true master learns to be grateful, in advance, for the things that are desired, because, being grateful in advance for some attainment or accomplishment does two very important things: one…it tricks your subconscious into believing that the goal is certain and two…it convinces other people, with whom you must interact to achieve your desires, that you know what you are about, that you are a winner, not a whiner (哀诉者).【小题1】The underlined word “utilities” refers to __________ in the passage. When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. Before they left, they asked me for advice about how to find accommodation (住所). I suggested that they should stay at ‘bed and breakfast’ houses, because this kind of accommodation gives foreign visitors a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my advice, but they came back with some funny stories.“We didn’t stay at ‘B&B’ (bed and breakfast) houses,” they said, “because we found that most families were away on holiday.”I thought this was strange. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought “VACANCIES” meant “holidays”, because the Spanish word for “holidays” is “vacaciones”. So they did not go to house where the sign outside said “VACANCIES”, which in English means there are free rooms. Then my friends went to house where the sign said “NO VACANCIES”, because they thought this meant the people who owned the house were not away on holiday. But they found that these houses were all full. As a result, they stayed at hotels! We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. In Spanish, the word “DIVERSION” means fun. In English, it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw the word “DIVERSION” on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fun. Instead, their car was soon stopped.English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages. Once in Paris, when someone offered me some more coffee, I said “Thank you” in French. I meant that I would like some more. However , to my surprise the coffee pot was taken away! Later I found out that “Thank you” in French means “No, thank you”.【小题1】My Spanish friends wanted advice about ______.A.learning English in EnglandB.finding places to stay in EnglandC.driving their car on English roadsD.going to England to have fun【小题2】I suggested that they stay at ‘B&B’ houses because ______.A.it would be available for them to practice EnglishB.it would be much cheaper than staying in hotelsC.it would be convenient for them to have dinnerD.it would be easy to find accommodation there【小题3】“NO VACANCIES” in English means ______.A.no free roomsB.with free roomsC.not away on holidayD.no holidays at all【小题4】If you see a road sign that says “DIVERSION”, you will ______.A.get held by the traffic policemenB.have a lot of fun and enjoy yourselfC.find the road is blocked by peopleD.have to take another different road【小题5】When someone offered me more coffee and I said “Thank you” in French, I ______.A.didn’t really want any more coffeeB.wanted the coffee pot taken awayC.really wanted some more coffeeD.wanted to express my politeness

DEveryone knows you must exercise regularly to keep good health. Indeed, staying physically fit is a big part of our culture. we consider(or rightly so)that healthy people are attractive people. Since most of us want to be attractive, there is no shortage of exercise clubs, training videos, magazines and books offering to help us stay physically fit. Unfortunately, however, our culture doesn’t place the same emphasis on mental fitness. Although we tend to like men and women with strong, healthy-looking bodies, we don’t have the same degree of respect or attraction for smart, educated, mentally healthy people. This is a pity, because there are great rewards for people who have developed the ability to think well. If your mind is well trained and flexible, you will be able to understand a great deal of what happens around you. And if you are also well educated --- that is, if you understand basic science, mathematics, music, art, literature, history and so on --- you will find it much easier to make good decisions throughout your life. Over the long run, this leads to a sense of control over your destiny and a much better life than otherwise. People who are poorly educated or who don’t think well --- that is, people who are not mentally fit --- see things differently. Their world is controlled by mysterious, often malevolent(恶意的)forces. Such people live within a system they will never master, forced to follow rules they will never understand. Although it may not be obvious, most spend their lives being manipulated(控制)by others. They are told what to do, what to think, how to spend their money, and what they should and should not aspire(渴望)to in life. In my opinion, if you want to live well, you must be able to use your mind well. For this reason, I want you to be able to concentrate, to solve problems, to understand complex ideas, and to think clearly and quickly. Such skills will make it easier for you to make informed decisions, understand current events, choose good friends, manage your money well, make wise lone-term decisions and appreciate music, art and literature. The key to developing such skills is to enjoy learning, and to have the ability and motivation to teach yourself.63. The writer of the passage feel disappointed that ____.
A. too little has been done to help people to keep physically fit B. too much has been done to help people to keep physically fit C. mentally healthy people are not as popular as physically healthy people D. physically healthy people are not as popular as mentally healthy people64. The underlined word “this” in the 3rd paragraph means ____. A. the understanding of a great deal of what goes on around you B. the understanding of basic science and mathematics
C. good training in body and mind D. being able to make good decisions in life65. The writer of this passage thinks those who are not mentally fit ____. A. live a poor and mysterious life&&&B. can’t control over their life C. often do what others do&&&&&&&&D. enjoy being fooled and ruled66. The best title of the passage will most probably be ____. A.
