Surfing the Internet for fun will
make you a better employee, according to an Australian study.
&&& The University
of Melbourne study shows that people who use the Internet for their own reasons
at work are about 9 percent more productive than those who do not. Study author
Brent Coker said, “Surfing the Internet at times
helps increase an employee’s attention.”
&&& “People need to relax for a bit to get back their attention,” Coker said on the university’s
website. “Having a short break, such as a quick
surfing of the Internet, helps the mind to rest itself, leading to a higher
total Internet attention for a day’s work, and as a result, increases
productivity(生产效率),”he said.
&&& According to
the study of 300 workers, 70 percent of people who use the Internet at work
surf the Internet for their own reasons during office hours. Among the most
popular surfing activities are searching for information about products,
reading online news, playing online games and watching videos. “Firms spend a lot of money on software to block their employees
from watching video, using social networking sites or shopping online,” said Coker. “That’s
not always a good idea.”
&&& However, Coker
said the study looked at people who surfed the Internet in moderation (适度), or were on the Internet
for less than 20 percent of their total time in the office. “Those who spend too much time surfing the Internet will have a
lower productivity than those without,” he said.

Nearly a third of parents say they feel squeezed into their homes but cannot afford to move to a bigger property,a report reveals today.&&&& Twenty-nine percent say 'their property is too small to fit the size of their family'-rising to 40 percent for those 34 and under. One in four children is 'forced to share'a bedroom, according to the Finda-Property. Com website. Property analyst Samantha Baden said:"Afford-ability remains a key issue for families, with the average cost of a three-bedroom home around £ 193,000."Very few can afford to buy - or to rent - a property of the size they want and in the area they desire to live in, according to Miss Baden.&&&& A recent report, from investment firm LV, also found that many 'space-starved parents'are pushed into a two-bedroom home which was perfect when they were a young couple, but has no space for three or so children. Grown-up children who cannot afford to leave home are also adding to the problem facing families in Britain's 'big squeeze'.&&&& For a home to be the correct size, which means it is not overcrowded, parents must have their own bedroom. Children under ten can share, as well as same-sex children between ten and 20.Any-one over 21 also needs their own room.&&&& The report comes as official figures, published yesterday by the Land Registry, revealing house prices are falling sharply in every region except London. The worst - hit area is the North East, where average house prices have fallen to below £ l00,000 for the first time in seven years. However, they remain unaffordable for millions.l. According to Paragraph l, the report reveals&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&.A. children like to do homework in the kitchenB. some families can't afford a bigger propertyC. only a few families have housing problemD. people are satisfied with their living condition2. What Miss Baden said in Paragraph 2 means&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&.A. most families don't have enough money yetB. no family could afford a three - bedroom homeC. it is common to live in a three - bedroom homeD. the price of a bigger property is still acceptable3. The report from the investment firm LV shows&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&.A. young couples should live in a two - bedroom homeB. families with three or so children couldn't afford a homeC. parents should buy houses for their grown - up childrenD. some grown - up children couldn't afford a separate home4. According to the passage,the right size for a home means&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&.A. parents should have a bedroom of their own B. anyone over 2l needs to live in their own homeC. children under ten should share parents' bedroomD. children under 20 should have their own bedroom5. She had been shopping with her Mom in Wal-Mart. She
must have been 6 years old, this beautiful brown haired, freckle-faced image of
innocence. Outside, it was pouring so heavily.
We all stood there just inside the door of the
Wal-Mart. We waited, some patiently, others annoyed because nature messed up
their hurried day. I got lost in the sound and sight of the heavens washing
away the dirt and dust of the world.
Her voice was so sweet as it broke the hypnotic trance
(昏昏欲睡) we were all caught in. “Mom, let’s run
through the rain,” she said.
“ No, honey. We’ll wait until it slows down a bit.”
Mom replied.
This young child waited about another minute and
repeated, “Mom, let’s run through the rain. ”
“We’ll get soaked if we do,” Mom said.
“ No, we won’t, Mom. That’s not what you said this
morning,” &the young girl said as she tore at her Mom’s arm.
“This morning? When did I say we could run through the
rain and not get wet?”
“Don’t you remember? When you were talking to Daddy
about his cancer, you said, If God can get us through this, he can get us
through anything!”
The entire crowd stopped dead silent. I dare say you
couldn’t hear anything but the rain. We all stood silently. No one came or left
in the next few minutes. Mom paused and thought for a moment about what she
would say.
Now some would laugh it off and scold her for being
silly. Some might even ignore what was said. But this was a moment of affirmation
in a young child’s lifetime when innocent trust can be developed so that it
will bloom into faith. “Honey , you are absolutely right. Let’s run through the
rain. If get wet, well maybe we just need washing.” Mom said. Then off they
ran.
We all stood watching, smiling and laughing as they
rushed past the cars and they held their shopping bags over their heads just in
case. They got soaked. But they were followed by a few who screamed and laughed
like children all the way to their cars. And yes, l did. I ran. I got wet. I
needed washing.

The amount of carbon taken in by
growing plants increased from 1982 through 1999 as
temperatures rose and the amount
of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere increased. But a new study
in Friday ’ s edition of the
journal Science found a drought - related decline
in such plant growth
from 2000 to 2009,even though
temperatures continued to climb.
As drought caused by warming
reduces the land ’ s ability to take in carbon,the result could
be more carbon dioxide left in
the atmosphere,and thus more warming,Zhao Maosheng from the
University of Montana explained
in a telephone interview.
“This is a pretty serious warning
that warmer temperatures are not going to endlessly improve
plant growth ’” co - author Steven
Running,also from the University of Montana ’ said in a
statement. “ We see this as a
bit of a surprise,and potentially significant on a policy level because
previous interpretations
suggested global warming might actually help plant growth around the
world, “ he said.
Instead, he and Zhao found a
small but measurable decline of about 1%,compared to a 6%
increase in the past decade.
Their study,based on the data
collected by NASA satellites,found that north
areas continued
to increase plant growth,thanks to warmer
temperatures and a longer growing season.
Someone commented, &This
past decade’ s net decline in earthly productivity suggests that a
complex relationship between
temperature, rainfall, cloudiness, and carbon dioxide, probably in
combination with other factors
such as nutrients (营养)and land
management,will determine
future patterns and trends in
productivity.,,
1.From the first paragraph, we can
learn in the recent decade or so.
A.&&&&
the emission(排放)of carbon hasn’ t been reduced
B.&&&&
draught has been causing loss of soil and water
C.&&&&
carbon dioxide levels have been rising
D.&&&&
the rise of temperature doesn' t promote the plant growth
2.Zhao Maosheng really worried that__ .
E.&&&&&
more and more land will be abandoned
F.&&&&
the climate becomes warmer and warmer
G.&&&
the emission of carbon dioxide increases
H.&&&
draught further reduces the number of the plants
3.Steven Running made his statement

temperature rise
J.&&&&&
urge the government to take necessary measures
K.&&&&
warn the people to strengthen the plant protection
L.&&&&

4.
We can infer from the passage that______ .
A.&&&&
global warming will determine the future
productivity
B.&&&&
various factors play a key role jointly on future
productivity
C.&&&&
earthly productivity actually increased in the past
decade
D.&&&& temperature
