(一)定语从句一般由关系代词和关系副词引导
1.关系代词:who, whom, whose, which, that, as
2.关系副词:when, where, why
关系代词和关系副词必须位于从句之首,主句先行词之后,起着连接先行词和从句的作用,&&& 同时在从句中又充当句子成分。
e.g. She is the girl who sings best of all.(关系代词who在从句中作主语)
&&&&&& The comrade with whom I came knows French.(whom在从句中作介词with的宾语)
3.关系代词和关系副词的用法:1)当先行词为人时用who 作主语,whom作宾语;2)当先行词为物或整个句子时用which ,可作主语或宾语;3)先行词为人、物时用that ,可作主语或宾语;4)whose用作定语,可指人或物;5)关系副词when(指时间,在定语从句中作时间状语,where(指地点,在定语从句中作地点状语),why(指原因,在定语从句中作原因状语)。
(二)限制性定语从句与非限制性定语从句
&&&&&& 1.限制性定语从句:从句与主句关系密切,去掉从句,主句意义不完整,甚至不合逻辑。
&&&&&& e.g. I was the only person in our office who was invited.(去掉定语从句,意思就不完整)
&&&&&& 2.非限制性定语从句:从句对先行词关系不密切,去掉定从句,意思仍然完整。形式上用逗号隔开,不能that用引导。
&&&&&& e.g. Toms father, who is over sixty, still works hard day and night.(who引导非限制性定语从句,整个句子可分成两句来翻译)
(三)使用定语从句时特别注意的几个问题
1.that与which的区别。
1)用that而不用 which的情况:①先行词为不定代词all, anything, nothing, ;②先行词有最高级修饰,有序数词修饰;③先行词有only, very, any等词修饰;④先行词既有人又有物时。
e.g. There is nothing that can prevent him from doing it. 没有什么能阻止他不干那件事。
&&&&&& The first place that they visited in Guilin was Elephant Trunk Hill. 在桂林他们所参观的第一个地方是象鼻山。
&&&&&& This is the best film that I have ever seen. 这部电影是我看过的最好的一部。
&&&&&& Mr Smith is the only foreigner that he knows. 史密斯先生是他认识的唯一的外国人。
2)用which而不用 that的情况:①引导非限制性定语从句;②代表整个主句的意思;③介词 + 关系代词。
e.g. He had failed in the maths exam, which made his father very angry. 他考试没有及格,这使他的父亲很生气。
This is the room in which my father lived last year. 这是父亲去年居住过的房子。
3)as引导定语从句时的用法
①as引导限制性定语从句通常用于the same
as结构中。
e.g. I want the same shirt as my friends. 我要一件跟我朋友一样的衬衫。
&&&&&& Such machines as are used in our workshop are made in China. 我们车间使用的这种机器是中国制造的。
②as引导非限制性定语从句既可放在主句之前,也可放在主句之后,用来修饰整个句子。通常用下列句型:as is known to all, as is said, as is reported, as is announced, as we all know, as I expect 等。
e.g. As I expected, he got the first place again in this mid-term examination. 正如我所预料的那样,他在这次期中考试中又获得了第一名。
3)as 引导非限制性定语从句时与which的区别
①当主句和从句语义一致时,用as;反之,用which来引导非限制性定语从句。
e.g. He made a long speech, as we expected.
&&&&&& He made a long speech, which was unexpected.
②当非限制定语从句为否定时,常用which引导。
e.g. Tom drinks a lot every day, which his wife doesnt like at all.
2. 关系代词在从句中作主语时,从句的谓语动词单数还是用复数应由先行词决定。
e.g. The man who lives downstairs speaks English fluently. 住在楼下的那个人英语说得很流利。
&&&&&& The students who are in Grade Three are going to climb the hill tomorrow.
3. 定语从句有时不直接紧靠先行词,中间由一个定语、状语或谓语隔开。
e.g. There is an expression in his eyes that I cant understand.
4. 引导定语从句的关系副词有时可以用介词 + which来代替。
e.g. October 1, 1949 was the day on which ( = when ) the Peoples Republic of China was founded.
5. 当定语从句中谓语动词是带介词或副词的固定短语动词时,短语动词的各个固定部分不要拆开。
e.g. The sick man whom she is looking after is her father.
6. 介词在关系代词前,只能用which和whom,且不能省略;介词在句尾,关系代词可有which, that, whom, 口语中也可用who,且可省略。
e.g. The man (whom/ who/ that) you were talking about has come to school.

(二)根据句子意思,在第一个空白处填入介词,在第二个填入关系代词whom或which:

  Such后面一定是that吗?
  相信同学们都听过这样的解题技巧:直接看选项,通过排除法选出正确选项。但很多巧妙的陷阱往往就布在一些我们最熟悉的固定搭配中,正所谓:搭配固然重要,解题还需谨慎。下面咱们就以一道出错率极高的题目为例,看看大家非常熟悉的一个考点“定语从句和状语从句引导词”中暗含的重重陷阱:
  【试题1】
  Mr Smith is _________ a good teacher _________ we all respect.
  A. such, that&B. such, as&C. so, that&D. so, as
  这道题目乍一看,特别简单,尤其是单独看每个选项的意思都很清晰,非常容易误选A。一方面是因为 “such … that” 是同学们很熟悉的一个句式,一看就可能选中了;另一方面,将 such … that … 的意思“如此……以致……”代入句中,也完全通顺,即“史密斯先生是一位如此优秀的教师,以致我们大家都尊敬他”。同时,B 选项大家看到“such as” ,脑海里会立刻跳出“例如”的意思,觉得不符合句意。 而C选项的 so that 意思和A选项的such... that接近,但是“ so + 形容詞 +that”,“such + 名词 + that”。这里第一空后面是“a good teacher”明显是一个名词,因此C也被排除。最后D选项中的“so as” 一般指 so as to “以便”,意思也不符合。从表面上看,以上分析很有道理,因此,同学们稍作判断后也许就信心满满的选择了A,但其实错了,这题的正确答案应该是B。
  因为大家忽略了一个非常重要的解题关键:判断句子成分是否完整。在such … that … (如此……以致……)结构中,that 引导的是结果状语从句,并且 that 在从句中不充当句子成分,若在上句填入 such … that …,句末的 respect 显然缺少宾语(注意:respect 是及物动词,后面需要加宾语)。正确的答案应是B,这里出现的是“such+名词+as+从句”的用法,such用来修饰名词,as 用作关系代词,用以引导定语从句,修饰其前的名词 teacher,同时 as 在定语从句中用作动词 respect 的宾语,句意为“史密斯先生是我们大家都尊敬的一位好老师”。
  同学们可能还会问,能否选A答案,而将其后的 that 视为引导定语从句的关系代词呢?答案是:在这里不行。确实,that 可以用于引导定语从句,但是大家可能没有注意到一条非常关键的语法规则:
  当先行词受到 such 的修饰时,其后的定语从句应用关系代词 as 来引导,而不用that。如:
  I've never heard such stories as he tells.&& 我从未听过象他讲的这样的故事。
  He is not such a fool as he looks.&&&&&&&& 他可不象他看上去的那样傻。
  请注意,如果我们把原题稍作改动,答案就完全不同了:
  【试题2】
  Mr Smith is _________ a good teacher _________ we all respect him.
  A. such, that&B. such, as&C. so, that&D. so, as
  答案:A& 因为that 引导的是结果状语从句,that在该状语从句中不充当句子成分,另外注意句中的respect已经带有宾语him。
  请大家从结构上区分下面这两个句子:
  1.&He is such a good teacher as we all respect. 他是一位我们大家都尊敬的好老师。
  (as引导的是定语从句,as 在该定语从句中用作respect的宾语。)
  2.&He is such a good teacher that we all respect him. 他是那样一位好老师,以致于我们大家都尊敬他。
  (that引导的是结果状语从句,that在从句中不充当成分。)
  同理,下列句子也因为从句“句子成分是否完整”而使用了完全不同的引导词:
  He's such a good boy that we all like him.&&& (从句完整)
  The boy is such that we all like him.&&&&&&&& (从句完整)
  He's such a good boy as we all like.&&&&&&&& (从句不完整--缺宾语)
  He's such a good boy as is liked by us all.&&& (从句不完整--缺主语)
  接下来,我们一起归纳一下这题涉及的两个重要考点:
  一、&such 修饰名词,而so 修饰形容词或副词
  学过 《二册》的同学会发现,在第35课“捉贼!”的课后难点中有专门关于“so”和“such”的辨析,在北京新东方专门针对高中同学开设的“高中新概念”课程中,老师就会重点强调它们之间的区别。下面大家就一起来看看新二中关于so和such用法的经典例句:
  Such + N.
  He told me that the firm could not afford to pay such large salaries.(NCE2,L15)
  So + adj.
  He was so surprised at being discovered that he did not even try to run away. (NCE2,L46)
  二、&&& such…as与such…that& 的区别
  前者用于引导定语从句,后者用于引导结果状语从句。
  1.&Such + N +(as + 不完整句子)
  定语从句
  As引导定语从句时在从句中做关系代词, 后面的从句并不完整,as在从句中充当主语,宾语,或表语。尤其在“such+名词+as从句”句型中,such用来修饰后面的名词,as引导的定语从句也是用来修饰前面的名词,例如下面的题目:

  I don't like ______ a man _______ talks big.
  A. such, that&B. such, as&C. so, that&D. so, as
  答案:B& 从句不完整,需要as充当主语。“我不喜欢吹牛的人。”
  【试题4】
  Such house ______ she could find was expensive .
  A. that&&&& B. which&&&& C. so&&&&&&&& D. as
  答案:D& 同样是as引导一个不完整的定语从句修饰前面的名词house,as充当从句中find的宾语。“凡是他能找到的房子都很贵。”
  2.&Such…(that + 完整句子)
  状语从句
  Such…that(如此……以致……)结构引导状语从句时,这里的that 引导的是结果状语从句,后面的从句完整,并且 that 在从句中不充当句子成分,这同样是高中《二册》课堂里反复出现的重点内容:
  The one with the money got such a fright that he dropped the bag.(NCE2,L35)
  The men got such a fright that they dropped the bag and ran away.(NCE2,L44)
  请注意区别下面的句子:
  1)This is such an interesting book as everyone likes.&&&&&&& (从句不完整--缺宾语)
  定语从句 :as做like的宾语& 这是一本每个人都喜欢的书.
  2)This is such an interesting book that everyone likes it.&&&& (从句完整--主谓宾结构)
  状语从句 :这是一本有趣的书以至于每个人都喜欢.
  下面我们再练2道题:
  【试题5】
  I've never heard_____ stories______ he tells.
  A. such, that&B. so, as&C. so, that&D. such, as
  答案:D& 定语从句,从句不完整--缺宾语,as做tell的宾语 。“我从未听过他讲那样的故事。 ”
  【试题6】
  It was _____ a cold day _____there was nobody on the street.
  A. so, that&B. so, as&C. such, that&D. such, as
  答案:C&& 状语从句, 从句完整--主系表结构。“天气很冷,街上没有一个人。 ”
  现在做起题来是不是特别轻松呢,今后一旦遇到这类题型,大家只要清晰掌握下面这条解题思路,就能以不变应万变:
  第一步& 永远先判断考察的从句是否完整。从句的结构完整与否,对于前面关系词的选择绝对是差之毫厘,谬以千里!同时,这也是“审题”的关键所在,会直接关系到所有选项功能的判断。这些英语基本功在二册中会得到反复练习,如:一旦句子成分不完整,则极有可能考查的是“定语从句”;如果从句(大部分结构为主、谓、宾)成分完整(what引导的从句除外),则是考查名词性从句和状语从句;
  第二步& 确定考点后,再根据句意和搭配按照需要选出正确选项。尤其要注意的是下列最常见引导词that, which,as在三大类从句(名词性从句、定语从句、状语从句)中的不同用法和功能,如“是否充当句子成分;意思是什么等等”。同时,避免被我们脑中的固定搭配束缚住或以偏概全,一切都应实事求是以当下的具体句子结构为准。
  最后,希望同学们平时做题时刻保持“火眼金睛”,认真总结每一个易错考点,最后百炼成钢,在考场“所向披靡”!
