One day, a woman was making chocolate cookies. When she ran out of chocolate powder (粉), she took out a chocolate bar and broke it into little pieces. She added the pieces to her cookie dough (面团) and baked (烘烤) it. She thought that the chocolate would (1) melt in the oven and make chocolate cookies. Far from melting, the pieces of chocolate stayed hard. When she took them out of the oven, she had chocolate chip cookies!
Another accidental invention was made by Frank Epperson, an eleven-year-old boy. In 1905, Frank sat outside on a winter evening, mixing up a big jug (罐) of powdered soda pop. Frank accidentally left the jug out during the night. When he went outside the next morning, he found the mixture in the jug frozen (冻僵) with the mixing stick stuck in the middle. Frank pulled out the frozen pop and tasted it. It was delicious! Frank started selling Epperson Icicles for 5 cents each. He later changed the name to (2) Popsicles.

Local relatives would help Dad get home from the hospital and look after him. But I wanted to let him know that we also cared about him, even when we weren't with him.
Then I remembered a family tradition when our children were small. Before leaving their grandparents' home after a visit, each child would write a love note to their grandparents. For days, their grandparents would smile as they read these notes of love.
So when I cleaned Dad's kitchen and made the bed for him, I wrote some notes. Some were like this,“Dad,I put the food in the fridge. “Some expressed my love,“Dad,I hope you will sleep well in your new bed.” Most notes were put downstairs he would stay for several weeks when he was. But I put one note upstairs under his pillow(枕头), “If you have found this note, you must be feeling better. We are so glad!"
These notes helped improve his health. Several weeks later, in one of our regular phone calls, I asked Dad how he was doing. He said, "Pretty good. I just found your note under my pillow upstairs! "

When we talk of plants, most of us will think of things that grow from the ground and have green leaves, but there are plants that do not look or act like other plants. Some of these belong to a special class of plants called fungi.
Fungi may appear almost everywhere. ①They commonly grow in wet places where they can get food and water easily. Because fungi do not have green leaves to make their own food, fungi must take their food from animals, other plants or water. Some fungi live on dead or rotting wood, while others grow on living trees or in dirt or moss(苔藓). Mushrooms(蘑菇) are the best-known fungi.
②There are many kinds of mushrooms appearing in all shapes and sizes. For example, cauliflower mushrooms are found in forests from July to October. They can grow to be as heavy as fifty pounds! They grow at the foot of trees. Squirrel’s bread(松茸) is another kind of wild mushroom. Its appearance and use can explain its name. These fungi look like small golden cakes. Squirrels can easily eat them or carry them off to their hole to eat later.

Today it is found that most middle school students pay little attention to sports. It’s because they have no interest in sports. It may not be the fact.
They often say they have other more important things to do. What are these important things?
Exams! ① They spend over ten hours a day revising for exams. So many of them almost become bookworms. In the summer holidays they could hardly do anything they like. Books stop them from going in for sports. Because of the stress from their parents and teachers, they have to work harder.
As for the students themselves, they want to get good results so that they can go further for their studies. ②They don’t have to put all their time into studying and give up all the sports and hobbies. (2013山东潍坊)七、阅读表达(共5小题;满分10分)
阅读下面的短文,并根据短文内容答题。
If you spend some time in an English-speaking country you might hear the term “etiquette”. It means normal and polite social behavior. This may seem like a difficult word at first, but it can be very useful to understand.
Etiquette is not the same in every culture or in every situation. For example, standing very close to the person you are talking with is quite common in some Asian countries. However, if you do this in Europesome people might feel uncomfortable. Even in Chinawe all know that etiquette is not the same in all situations. Perhaps we think that talking loudly in our own homes is fine, but there are other places where talking loudly is not allowed. For example, most people would agree that talking loudly in a library, a museum or a movie theater is impolite. Even if you are with your friends, it is better to keep your voice down in public places.
If we see someone breaking the rules of etiquette, we may politely give them some suggestions. One of the most polite ways is to ask someone, Would you mind doing this or Would you mind not doing that. People don’t usually like to be criticized, so we have to be careful how we do this.
Although rules of etiquette can often be different, some rules are the same almost everywhere in the world! For example, dropping litter is almost never allowed. If you see someone you know doing this, you can ask him, Would you mind picking it up?
What does the word “etiquette” mean?& (根据短文内容回答问题)
