you can try this
1. boot into safe mode,delete these keys from registry
and restart computer
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Servic
2. reinstall TCP/IP over the top (following are the
correct steps to do it)
a. control panel-&network connections-&right click
on &LAN or high speed internet connection& and open
properties
b. click install -& choose &protocol& and click add -&
files from& box type &c:\windows\inf& and then click &ok&
on the rest of the boxes and close them all.
c. restart the computer
3. check your internet connection, it should work fine.

Backup the winsock keys before you delete them.
I've never had any luck
with this technique.

Thank you very much Sandeep - that worked like a treat.
My connection is
now up and running, and the company has email again.
(I did back up the registry first.)
And now to my next question:-
Does anyone at Microsoft have an idea as to what causes this.
several XP PCs, and would hate to lose another one.
Admittedly it was the
most important one (mail server) that crashed, and all the others are just
desktops, but even so, a Knowledge Base article would be nice.
search produces lots of tantalising titbits, but no definative solution.
